Here's how I explain that passage about Peter in Mt.16: Peter's thought life was all about 'preservaton of self'. The world system, flesh, and the devil trains people this way. Peter WASN'T possessed by satan; his thinking was just 'self preserving' which was contrary to God's plan for Jesus' life. Therefore, Peter DIDN'T have God's viewpoint of Jesus' purpose (to die) and he recognized Peter's mental viewpoint as a satanic, self-preserving one. He WASN'T demonized.
A Christian can be possessed by a demon. There are no Scriptures that say that the Spirit cannot be defiled. In fact, we read in Thess. 5: 23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
It wasn't until I went down on an alter call and confessed my sin and asked that I be free of that bondage that I was able to resist that temptation. Now being free, I still am tempted from time to time, but I now have the ability to consciously choose not to sin. I think it all boils down to confessing your sins to one another. That has so much power.
This makes so much sense to me. I am a Christian, but for a long time I suffered with a n addiction to porn. I didn't want that but it seemed I couldn't escape it. I remember trying on my own to renounce Satan on my own and there were a couple demonic instances.
I agree. If I come across bad thoughts and know it is not God...but Satun or demon. I voice outloud "Satun,
get out of my thoughts in the name of Jesus Christ"
You then fill that hole with a Godly thought.
The devil will try everthing to try and break you away from the goodness of God. Don't let demons or the devil get in the way, when they do put them in there place....tell them to leave in the name of Jesus Christ!
fill that hole: I purposely memorized Psalm 100, which is about 3 verses, so I could speak out in praise to block impure thoughts. I also repeat it to counter 'depressing' news, circumstance.. you know, one day I realised it was playing in my brain by itself? Hallelujah!
I have heard the devil talk to me trying to put thoughts in my head...

Why would your Spirit needto be sanctified
if it can never be soiled or defiled.

If the Holy Spirit is truly within you, there is no room for Satan.

Like you said, one of the ways the devil can gain a foothold in your life is by convincing you that you are self sufficient. Thanx for sharing that!
