  • they did have ian in mind.. it was in honor of him

  • This is the most beautiful piece of work New Order accomplished, but not the least......

  • love this f'in song!!!! <3

  • One of the MOST classic songs of all for me. I can't ever get enough of it. New Order is by far one the the GREATEST ever. Been a fan since 1984 and to this day listen to them daily. Thanks guys.

  • @TracieWhoDat couldnt of put it better myself :)

  • One of the MOST classic songs of all for me. I can't ever get enough of it. New Order is by far one the the GREATEST ever. Been a fan since 1984 and to this day listen to them daily. Thanks guys.

  • i tend to think they had Ian in mind when they wrote this. This is my favorite New Order piece. Pretty powerful when turned up loud>

  • This is the perfect New Order song if you need a shite

  • Thanks SO MUCH for posting this! Elegia means elegy - it is a funeral durge.

Truly this is the most moving song in the world; a masterful and poetic work of genius. I also saw them perform it live in 1986 - there are no words. And the film "More" is also meaningful brilliant.

That's why my nick has been Elegia More since 1999.

Today I'm working on my funeral plans and I think I'm going to be bold and have Elegia played at the service.

  • Thanks SO MUCH for posting this! Elegia means elegy - it is a funeral durge. It is the most beautiful and masterpiece of modern music I've ever heard. And MORE is my favorite short film of all time.

That's why my nick is Elegia More. :)

  • @gouryella54

I think you should listen to more music.

    :)

    But it is good.

  • How can you not love this?

  • It makes me think of my bf that i miss so very much. He doesnt even care.

  • I was driving through the rain when this song popped ,up and it was a moment of sheer beauty that will never be equaled

  • this is music at its very best all u fagot stundants what u reap in music is wot u sow and this is pure class the greatest new order tune ever and the first one to be released after ian curtis , this is for Ian RIP

  • How could this song be not on the official OST from Pretty in Pink? It's wonderful. @DaisyDarling: I have seen this movie just two days ago for the first time. I'm on a John Hughes trip since I saw Dogma (not the first time, but more looking for small details). I'm now 27 years old and THAT'S how teen romance movies should be. Unfortunately the last 10 mins ruined it. It would be an 8/10 but with this ending only 6/10. It's like they had no more time. Breakfast Club didn't make this mistake.

  • It's hard to listen to for me because of the part when this plays in "Pretty In Pink"...I know that sounds pretty lame but i've loved that film for years and its always made me feel so sad when i hear this. When she's all humiliated and furious and heartbroken...Amazing piece of music.

  • I would have never heard this song, if not for Mark Osbourne's short animated film, More.

It's an incredible work, and this song is a big part of what makes it so amazing.

  • @Goatmon Thank you so much for mentioning Mark Osbourne's film here! I too have learned about this song through his film, years ago. Bought the Low-Life album after that just for this song. I couldn't remember the name of the filmmaker nor the title of the film though, and I have been looking for it for a long time. Haven't seen it since 2003 or something. Thanks man!

  • Discovered this from watching the short claymation film "MORE," which I absolutely reccomend to anyone who wants to see something spectacular on YouTube. Wanted to hear the whole version of the song that provided the backdrop for the film...and I must say, I wasn't disappointed. This is music at its finest.

  • - priceless !!!

  • I cant help but see the MORE short when I hear this. I should listen to more New Order so I can see my own images

  • No lyrics.... just guitars and synths. Moody and magnificent

  • Thumbs up if you searched for this song after looking it up from the movie "Pretty In Pink."

  • Could also be the music for a spaghetti western. Pure class .

  • The word "Elegia" ("ελεγεία") is Greek and it means a short lyric melancholic poem with mourning content.Ιt used to be recited ans accompanied by a musical instrument called "lumen".

  • @venthesikimis I believe it was composed with Ian Curtis in mind.

  • @kams1001 It was composed with Curtis in mind. Elgia means Eulogy. It was their Eulogy for Ian.

  • This song should be the standard for all music. Thumbs way up.

  • Some of New order's finest work is on this album, this song features on a episode of CSI where Grissom is piecing together evidence from a murder and it just fits beautifully, Outstanding track.

  • i know this song three years ago, and it always makes me feel weird, cool, and strange emotions, imagine stuff i´ve never seen and fall into deepest relaxing state, when i listen to it... one of my fav. sons :D

  • Dramatic sorrow!

  • Orbital's equally epic "The Box" is something of a 90's electronica reprise and companioon piece to this.

  • This music reminds us all of who New Order originally was, and where they came from. It has the same mood as a Joy Division song, perhaps more than any other New Order tracks. At any time I'm expecting to hear the voice of Ian Curtis telling his intimate despair to the world. Bernard Sumner was also the music director of Joy Division and only him knew how to resuscitate the inner soul to its perfection. Legends never die.

  • Played this song once to one of my evening school classmates when I gave him a lift home. He commented that it was a dumm sunday school song (remember this, 'Neil'?) Needless to say he never got a ride again.

  • @habati65 It's not really the best song to listen to in a car. You need a quiet environment for it to have its impact.

  • One effing great New Order song! I really like the way Hooky Hook is playing a melody line on the bass.

  • fuck me its Tubular bells only joking this is fucking fantastic absolutely beautiful

  • I Named my son Sumner and my daughter Elegia

  • thats beautiful

  • Silly question but can anyone tell me what type of electric guitar and guitar effect New Order use, it sounds slightly detuned or is that the effect? Thank you.

  • listened to this wearing sony dJ quality headphones. Absolute bliss !!!!!!!!!!

  • played during a very poignant moment in pretty in pink.

  • Uff!! Que viejos y buenos recuerdos... Forever and ever

    MERCIIII!!

  • I love this song!

  • Une belle apparition dans un épisode des Experts Miami (CSI)

  • If it makes you feel any better, I have the original vinyl, and the song is the short version on it too.

  • love it

  • where can i download this song?

    the complete version obviously

  • @camiloazuul

Got this version in a 5CD Album called Retro.

  • Never eard this version , hope it's long enought to reach dream time ...Night Night Scotland...:-)

  • So The Damned ripped this off and called it The Portrait???

  • @natashatravel They are indeed similar, but not similar enough to say they ripped them off, far from it.

  • MIRO1AS, try tangerine dream's ricochet. If you liked Elegia then you will definitely like ricochet :-)

Other artists with the same kind of music: Mike Oldfield (tubular bells), Vangelis (Alpha, Pulstar...), Jean Michel Jarre (O2, waiting for cousteau...)

  • i like this kind of music ...and searching always for music look like this .... can anybody help ?

  • Fields of the Nephilim do sound like this but with added bonus of Karls growl vocals! Try the cd Elizium. Then again are you talking of just this track or New Order?

  • Hey pal, you can try tangerine dream's Ricochet ! If you liked Elegia then you will definitely like Ricochet :-)

Other artists with the same kind of music: Mike Oldfield, Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre

  • I love this.........:-)))) Coz it doesn't sound like New Order! It sounds like the Sisters! Go ahead Go Figure......! And before ya say owt I like New Order! Im a Manc too!

  • Epic!

  • This tune is just out there amazing. Especially with a nice bottle of Savignon Blanc too !

  • This song is part of the movie "Pretty In Pink". Beautiful piece...

  • @lylymad

Yeah I believe there are three New Order songs featured in the movie.

  • @imbuemyblue Well, "Shell-Shock" is in the soundtrack too but I don't remember if there is another song of them featured in the movie...

  • This is my favorite New Order song hands down...so underated...very inspirational piece. Thanks New Order for this :)

  • this is a great piece of work, love it, true legend of 80's

  • 1:15 is where it really kicks off..reminds me of growing up in the miserable 80s in Ireland..lucky enough to be so young at that time..was a grey and downbeat country..much better now thank Christ

  • good call. what a tune

  • Мне просто мозг выносит эта композиция, каждый раз, когда я ее слушаю.

Ну и мульт (mark osborne - "more"), на который эта музыка была наложена тоже, конечно, заслуживает внимания.

  • This makes me think of someone drowning. And trying not to but failing.

  • "More"!!!!

Awesome claymation movie with this song! : D Makes me have bliss, lol!

I love the concept of this!

  • Thats with a professional account. You have to pay for that.

  • Cheeky cunt. Go buy the album if you want the entire thing uninterrupted. The nerve of some people on here :P

  • What a greate band! New Order!

  • beautiful song but I will admit that I much prefer listening to it on the MORE video.

  • nice song very lively ! makes me feel very happy and joyfull

  • For me it's the complete opposite. For me, I feel the melancholy, numbness and all that is wrong with this world. Great tune though, I agree. Simple, yet effective.

  • Which is why it worked so well in the short film More.

  • You know, I hear this song, and you know that image comes to me? Picture the end of a movie: a couple waltzing, sadly but lovingly, in the midst of nuclear fallout. They look into each-other's eyes as the radioactive ash falls upon them, burning the life out of them, knowing that their world is coming to an end, but also that their love will be eternal.

    How about you?

  • it actually reminds me of this cool short just go to my favporites and click cool animation with the brown guy in it. It a real good thought provoker.

  • Wow. That's beautiful....

  • Aw after hearing this version I wish this version was on album, it completes it. Elegia must be one of the best instrumentals of all time!

  • KLillz, you are right, Joy Division were amazing but i still prefer the early New Order. It's like the beginning of 'Dance Music' for me. A decade ahead of it's time and still easy to groove to today

  • Discovered this song today and it is very inspiring. A nice tune to listen to while thinking deeply.

  • Try looking up "more". Theres a realy awesome animation with the shorter version of this song on it.

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah Youtube the animation "More" which uses the haunting tone of this track brilliantly

  • Its because it both provides the theme of joy and sorrow simultaneously.

  • I also saw it on CSI this afternoon so I had to look it up here because they cut it off when it was getting good, but my memory imprint took me right back to Pretty in Pink, poor Duckie.

  • Ah me too Pretty in Pink !!! although it was so briefly played in the film but so captured the moment, yeah poor Duckie, Poor Andie too at this point, takes me back soooo many years ago...

  • One of the best. An equally entrancing song is 'Alma' by the Teddybears. Both are my favorites.

  • This song is relaxing but haunting at the same time. Its awesome!

  • The best album of New Order and one of the 80's best.Great & unforgettable days...

  • I would say that Power, Corruption and Lies was New Order's best album, but their very early stuff was also brilliant. Their music was revolutionary and way ahead of its time. Try their early stuff, you won't be disappointed :)

  • UNforgettable days....yes indeed they are!

  • I can't even say what I feel everytime I listen to this song

  • @Bubblex16 For me there's a huge Morricone inspiration in it too...

  • Anyone have the whole 17 minute song?

  • This song is da 2nd best. :D

  • I first heard this on an episode of CSI. Doesn't anyone else think that some inspiration of this had to be from Ennio Morricone's work in Once Upon A Time in the West?

  • en effet, cela sonne comme du Morricone. Magnifiquement désespéré

  • This is a beautiful song.

  • gotta be about 10 years ago on sci-fi channel a show called exposure had short films and i saw "More" i was so awe-struck when i saw this masterpiece. It just makes me feel like im drifting away into the darkness to the unknown. very erie feeling but oddly reassuring. totally mind blowing.

  • so sad.......but also so fucking great......

  • you mean more?

  • I first heard this in an animated short called "get happy"

  • Are you sure you're not thinking of "More" ??

  • This song was in a animated short film called

More you should check it out (only 5 minutes long), and it was great

  • MORE is amazing! one of the best short films ever.

  • Tell me more. HA!!! Ok, I made myself laugh. Pathetic. No, seriously. I will check it out. I thought it was the name of a Pink Floyd film. Whatevuh.

  • Definitely awesome! The song and the tone of the animated short fit together quite well. Somber, solemn, and somewhat disheartening similar to the Moonlight Sonata.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought there were similarities to Moonlight Sonata.

The pattern of this song is definitely similar.

  • Thanks for the tip, great short film.

  • I love MORE, best short film ever. 4 years ago I saw it, loved it and still love it.

  • @whatnowho05

I´m looking for that short film, but I can´t....could you tell me the link?...thanks!!!

  • @whatnowho05

the film that changed my life

  • This excellent instrumental is the featured item on the 13th of February of the book, 'The Song For Today' by Jimmie Oliver.

  • Why is this song released as only 4:55 seconds? Thats the version I got from iTunes... I had no idea that there was a longer one. Where can I buy the longer one?

  • Collector's Edition of the Low-Life album.

  • my gosh...this is such a great song, i find myself starting it over from the beginning after 2 minutes into the song just to hear it again, i forget it is 17 minutes long.....its so powerful...., imagine knowing you made such a masterpiece. it really is a lovely lovely song! and its from one of my favorite 80s movies pretty in pink... =]

  • gorgeous song

  • I just love this music, take a look at the only cover on youtube that i made :p

    5 Stars =)

  • in my humble opinion new order is one of the most underrated bands of all time.

they shaped my youth, and even my adulthood as far as mood and feeling.

when you listen to them you hear so so many layers. they were brilliant. chicago

loves you you guys !!! lane tech 86

  • i love this song!

  • Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up ...

  • Fantastic !!! I love this album...

  • SHOW DE BOLA !

  • My favourite album of all time, peeking.

  • This kind of Building it up!! i love this way of making music

  • Very sad, but I find "Atmosphere" to be sadder.

  • This is one of the most genius and greatest song ever!! I just can´t stop loving it!! I´ve listen to it everytime I´m feeling down, and it helps. This is a true onor to Ian Curtis and his life from his old band members in New Order.

  • I get this picture in my head where someone I love has just died.

  • Brings me down too.

  • Comment removed

  • I wouldn't say the devil. These sounds are genuine, not buttered up for the mass-market, but ironically it was played at a pivotal moment in the film Pretty in Pink.

  • ths song makes me depressed

  • Onor Joy Division and IAN CURTIS!!!!

  • I'm not huge into the band... But I really like this song... Do they have any other tracks like this? Or are they all like that "You Spin Me Round" new wave upbeat sound?

  • "Avalanche", the last track on "Republic", is a lot like this. Also, New Order's first two albums ("Movement" and "Power, Corruption and Lies") have more of a depressing sound.

  • Movement is fantastic.

  • If you think New Order is a "You Spin Me Round" type of band, you haven't gone deep enough into the band. Sure they seem like that at first but even their upbeat new wave songs are different than others. Take "True Faith" for example. Upbeat music but listen carefully, it's rather sad.

I generally am not a "You Spin Me Round" type either but New Order is so NOT like other bands.

  • omg where did you get this version?!?!

  • probably from the Low Life CD, i have found it on RS, when you are interested PM me 'dd

  • This is incredible! Could you please share this full version with me?

  • sorry for the spelling I'm in hospital at the MOE!!!SSShhhhh.cant switch this of im morphined out my head and on Valium, tehe.

    shit its 11 30 now.last time then.lights out.

  • Mega, art in motion with Music.

  • Beaufiful.

  • this by far my favorite new order song of all time.I have not heard this in so long and it brings back such memories WOW !

  • I had this song on tape years ago and think I have still got it. If my memory serves me right this was released on casette and the release was simply called FACT 150C

  • Sorry it was Fact 100 the Low Life album

  • found it - if anybody needs this song PM me!!

  • damn its corrupt :@

  • A non-corrupted version does exist out there on the internet, as that is where I got it from originally. However, the measures I went through to get it were extreme. As far as I know, the only uncorrupted version readily available on the internet is the one I have been giving people.

  • Is there any chances that u could share it with me? :)

  • i really cant thank you for this.look through my page.I have some very rare copies of JD

WHEN THEY WAS STIFF KITTENS/HOUSE OF DOOLLS,AND Warsaw.they are bootleg.I will gladly give share them jus
