  • 24 people have no soul

  • What a tribute. I think I know why Robert Plant is spending a ton of time and owns a house in Nashville.

  • WOW! Super!!!

  • MTV was the best back in the day.

  • verry nice défoncé surtout ...

  • Truth to tell, I respect carpenters a hell of a lot more than financial planners or bankers. My dad had a trade and he was always home for dinner and didn't bring his work home. Rich ain't everything.

  • r plant ,le leader magicien the best sixties led zeppelin ,ecoutez le titre " communication breakdown" ,super top ,number one groupe hard rock in the world ,la reference hard ,house heavie metal rock ,the best LED ZEP vive robert plant !! rebel68

  • in addition, this was on TV?!

i wish there was a station like old mtv.

  • is that terry reid on guitar?

  • Robert plant is beautiful :)

  • They have really Lived so much.. and i haven't begun....

  • This song with Robert Plant singing speaks to my heart and soul<3

  • For those interested... there is an interview with Kevin Mcmichael ( Robert Plant's Virtuoso guitarist) in the video response "The making of Bill Jardine Magical Worlds

    .

  • 'If I was a Carpenter....would you marry me any way...????? WTF! What's wrong with being a Carpenter!! Got more skills than some Cop, Computer geek or most desk Jockeys! I know some Engineers that make less than Carpenters!

  • @kevbo7s I don't think the author was saying anthing bad about being a carpenter. I think what he meant was would she still feel the same if he weren't a rich and famous musician/entertainer. He is questioning her true motive in my opinion. I am in construction myself so I know the one side and the answer to the question posed in the lyrics has thus far been a resounding NO. haha

  • @kevbo7s Having a trade is something to be proud of and a legacy to leave behind. :)

  • @kevbo7s damn right!

  • Great song! We need bands like Led Zepplin to cover songs like these.

  • Also if this song isn't wirtten by them, it sounds exactly like Led Zeppelin!

  • @woingenau300 Original done.written by Bobby Darin... covered by Bob Seger, Johnny Cash etc.

  • Reminds me of a girl I once knew

  • @msword11 It actually reminds me of the only girl I think I have ever loved...

  • I do... ;) Love his laugh in the beginning.

  • Damn zeppelin were so great. Robert looks amazing. True Rock lord.

  • Everyone has their preferences - after all this song has been done by artists in just about every musical genre there is. I haven't heard a version yet that I dislike. I like Hardin's own version the best. Other favorites are Bobby Darin and Johnny Cash. RP's voice is so very distinctive and very enjoyable - I love him doing this. I don't think Small Faces comes even close. I've watched SF once - I've lost count how many times I've come back here. To each their own.

  • This is a bad recording though... and I'm guessing it was Page past his prime. I guess it's proof: Marriott had a wide vocal range where he sounded good. Page was good at the high end. Yeah, Marriott sounded better here.

  • If u were a carpenter, u would have an HONEST job. 10 billion people can sing better, or as bad.

  • @Whip111

    U mad?

  • when was this??

  • Just wow

  • PISHHHHHHH!!! CRAPY CRAPX10

  • Love the song, and Robert's voice is freakin great as always. However, he appeared to be either terribly bored, jet lagged, or ready to finish and go have some fun. I'll never know. But I love the musician!!!

  • It's as if Robert Plant was always the intended voice for Tim Hardin's composition. Beautiful.

  • Well, I can't find it on Youtube, but if you can get a copy of The Great Fatsby by Leslie West, check out his version.

  • high new orleans 2011 one hand clapping

saw you with new orleans jazz and heritage with lady

    when the levee came back

bent by the BP british invasion

common check, mate. doubt the green fairy's truth liquidescence

    free beer tomorrow

  • Yes Robert, I will have your baby! :)

  • this is fantastic - plant is great

  • Huh, more like "if I were a lady and you were a lady..." - sorry, couldn't resist...I mean, could you imagine being married to a guy who screeches for his favorite slippers? Nice little ending with the harmonies.

  • Huh, more like "if I were a lady and you were a lady..." - sorry, couldn't resist...

  • I still haven't seen anyone touch Bobby Darin's take on this song.

  • @EamonJgod

agreed. bobby darrin's voice was unbelievable.

  • @babystinky Darin was a great vocal stylist and a cool cat, but Steve Marriott (small faces) was a far superior singer. Robert Plant here owes his career to Marriott as he patterned his style entirely on Steve's.

  • @EamonJgod you should really listen to steve Marriotts take, its REAL good alot better than Plants.

  • @EamonJgod Except the legendary man in black who smokes him!

  • just recent years have dug around and really appreciate robert plant. i swear hes got THE GREAT voice of any front man in any rock band

  • Great Bobby Darin classic.

  • Fuck any of you who don't respect Robert Plant, the man is legendary.

  • Plant's voice is a shadow of its former glory.

  • @atrumira His voice sounds different but is still great. I happen to prefer the older version but I can understand why others don't. To each his own.

  • yawn

  • bobby darin's voice in this is the best. i like roberts version though. i am glad he covered it. but darins voice is astounding.

  • The image on the front of his top is for Umm Kulthum! The late and most famous female Arab singer, who is considered to be a legend by almost all Arabs. Check wikipedia if you're curious about her. =)

  • wasnt Otis Redding first?

  • @corso12003 not Redding but four tops

  • @corso12003 Bobby Darin. It's Bobby's original song.

  • @hazelmay64 what about Tim Hardin man

  • @MoebiusCrononauta Tim Hardin didn't write "If I Were a Carpenter". I was referring to the composer.

  • @hazelmay64 I think it was Tim Hardin who wrote it.

  • @muguele My bad, muguele. You are absolutely right. I researched further this morning and it was Tim Hardin... according to the website I was on this morning, Hardin wrote that for Bobby to sing. Sorry about that. I do love Bobby's version the best.

  • @hazelmay64 Bobby Darin released it first, Tim composed it

  • This is a great version of this wonderful song

  • John Swan does this song the best...

  • Robert Plant !

  • Historic!

  • I love the faces Robert seems to be making here, although it's a beautiful song, this is amusing.

  • awesome

  • umm khlthooom,

  • where on earth did the Umm Khlthoom tee shirt come from, Khan Kalili?

  • Kevin Macmichael (RIP) what a talent.

  • jonny cash

  • For all the real Zep Fans , This is gorges . From Sound Of The Haze , God bless all of you !

  • For all the real Zep Fans !!!!!!! This is gorges, from Sound the Haze, God Bless All !

  • This is a magnificent song and there are many fine cover versions, but Tim Hardin wrote it and Tim Hardin will always own it.

  • ****Update**** The Seger version IS here on youtube !!!! Hurry up and get there !!

  • ****Everybody Listen Up***** Yes, this is a very nice version but I recently discovered a version of this song by Mr.Bob Seger done in 1972. Oh my god. Just plain Unbelievable. I think its Much better than Everybodys remake, even the original ! Its on a brand new CD called "Early Seger Vol.1". I got it @ Walmart for about 8 dollars. Seger fan or not, You Gotta Hear this song ASAP!!!

  • I want Robert Plant hair!

  • I'll bet this song inspired "Thank You"

  • @aegisforex Hah yea, I thought that straight away.

  • black dog when the leve breaks

  • As usual, I think the original radio version by Bobby Darrin was best..

  • I have always loved this one of all versions.

  • Sorry to say a pathetic version of this song. Next ot June and Johny, Allison Krauss and Dwight Yoakum absolutey nailed it.

  • @golfern58 Check out Small faces or Bob Seger versions.

  • I love Darin and Marriotts versions, can't say who's better though, both brilliant but too different.

  • Who is the guitarist???

  • Kevin MacMichael.

  • My favorite voice of all time. Absolutely amazing.

  • no way this is from 67....lmao .....Plant look younger in the 70's....and where did that MTV logo on the vid. come from? No MTV in the 60's.....lmao

  • TV channels commonly superimpose their logo over videos they own the rights to or videos they play. That logo could just mean that this video appeared on MTV at one time. I don't think that is the case here - i.e. I think this is something akin to Unplugged on MTV, back when <usic Television actually featured music.

  • hey what is that MTV logo doing on a 67 video?????? lmao

  • Plant looks older in 67 than he did in all of the 70's.....is this really from 67?

  • LOL. If you're serious, the answer is no. Robert Plant would have been about 19 in 1967, 20-30 pounds lighter, as thin as a rail, and with much much shorter hair. His voice would have also sounded much different and he probably wouldn't be singing solo. He was referencing Tim Hardin, the writer and first singer of "If I were a Carpenter" who wrote it in 1967.

Since the song he is singing here is on his Fate of Nations, which came out in 1993, this video is probably from 1993, 1994, or 1995.

  • it was filmed in '67. anyone know who the guitarist is??

  • not filmed in '67

  • what is Robert wearing on the video?

  • Plant is god

  • Compared to Marriott he's a twig, you do know Marriott was Page's first choice, I wish sometimes Steve had said yes, what magic would we have gotten?

  • I stand corrected , Chicken shack does the best version.

look it up its an outstanding prog version

  • what year was this filmed?

  • Yea, I have seen that video, its great because even though you can tell they didnt do any practicing before hand, they still pulled it off in great style.

  • damn, i love this dude's voice.

  • Of course no competition to Bobby Darin's definitive rendition, Plant nonetheless does a nice job here. I was never a big fan of Zeppelin, but did enjoy his Honey Drippers stuff. I wish he would record an album of standards and songs of this sort. His voice is amazing and unique.

  • sorry, no one does better than Bobby Darin with this song.

  • have you heard the duet with Stevie Wonder ?

  • sorry , plant wins at every song.

and even cash was better than bobby

  • I am used to the Bobby Darin version... so soft and smooth. But I never in a million years would have expected to hear Robert Plant doing it. I am way moved and a little turned on. :-)

  • Try Small Faces version, Steve Marriott destroy's Plant, in Plants own words "I would never follow Steve Marriott onto a stage", good of him to be honest actually.

  • Watching Plant?

I didn't expect it from you I... ha ha ha :)

    great quote from Bob P.

  • Just comparing with Darin and Steve, good to hear from you girl.

  • "If I Were A Carpenter" (Key of G: 5D-4C-1G-6mEm) was one of the first songs I ever learned. Fantastic song!

  • WOW. Thought the Cash and Carter version was good. This is Amazing. So raw and from the heart.

  • great version of a great song

  • ok, a great singer- but this song, he must have a bad day!

Remember Steve from the Small faces with this song!

  • Steve Marriot was Leppelin's first choice for lead vocalist /guitarist. His management wouldn't release him...

  • he messed up the words BADLY! you could see him get embarassed...

  • Reminds of their (LZ) song "Thankyou".

  • Give me Tim Hardin or Bobby Darin any day.

  • robert plant rocks

  • robert plant comes from my home town , this area is known for its iron and steel furnaces and metal bashing . This area is called the black country , home of heavy metal .

  • Anyone who says he ever lost his vioce has obviously lost their ability to hear.

    Guitarist kicks ass too!

  • I was very disappointed not to find any Tim Hardin. I think there is some issue now about copyrights, some videos become not available...I know nothing about it obviously, all I know is it sucks. One very good cover was Barry McGuire. Save your love for loneliness, save your love for sorrow, I'll give you my onlyness, please give me your tomorrow.

  • Small Faces.

  • @Diceydee He looks gay ! Hair swish !

  • @Diceydee

...version suck. Tim Hardins version is still the best. Maybe not so strange, it's HIS song after all.

  • the best cover...sounds like Thank You...same as it ever was...Robert Plant is the best..

  • was looking for some live tim hardin here on utube and found nothing except covers by numerous attemptors. find that fitting as tim was a well kept secret to most of the consumers. he recorded the first double live album and it was great. still have it plus the songbook. love robert plant but tim was also a significant talent. hope someone can put some of his live songs on here sometime. they must exist. his obituary was on page 4 of the times the day john lennon was assasinated. no one noticed

  • man i miss robert and zeppelin. back in their days LED ZEP was huuggeee. the band LZ last performed in america in 1977 in oakland, ca. bloodbath backstage

  • where you there?

    :)

love this voice and zep too. i was at the reunion. great.

  • the best!!!!!!!!!!!

  • As only Robert Plant can....great!

  • Attention à la justesse, quand même...

  • haha, he looks more younger and alive here in 93 than he did back in the 80´s with short hair. Great performance.

  • I forgot how amazing Robert Plant was thanks for posting

  • my ex met Robert while he was staying down in Cornwall recording at the Sawmills studios Cornwall some years back, in The Fishermans Arms Golant, love this song!

  • 38 secs in: "If a miller were my trade.." ?

    Learn the words Bobby.

  • This it's "If milling were my trade.." (As it comes after ..."If I were a carpenter...")

Don't know the song though- but as always Plant is awesome!

  • Lyrics should be:

"If a tinker were my trade

    Would you still find me

    Carrying the pots I'd made

    Following behind me"

He may have changed the words deliberately, or just have forgotten them.

  • Fascinating..

  • Hello -Robert plant has always been fantastic. He once asked my friend in the OUR PRICE record shop if she knew him.

Sadly when he said his name she still had no idea. I think he lives out kidderminster or stourport way ?

  • steve marriott (small faces) does an exceptional version of this. i can't see why there are any comparisons between the two. Steve is way out there.

  • Marriott is king.

    Long live RJD

  • The guitar player has been with Sting for years. Beautiful.

  • very good. But I prefer the Leslie West (of Mountain fame) version even better.

search this, with quotes, on the 'Tube:

"Leslie West - Mountain Tribute - If I Were a Carpenter"

  • Didn't he play with Steve Marriott (of Small Faces & Humble Pie fame ) in his later career?

Thanks for the info, I'll check that stuff.

  • Awesome version of this song! I watch this vid at least 4 or more times a week. Thanks for posting!

  • I LOVE his hair, the sensuous way he just swings it around as he sings...that's sexy!!

  • Looks more like Roy Orbison on his shirt.

  • Great song.... Hey! is that a visionary T-shirt of Michael Jackson, or is it Jack White already.... :-p

  • la miglior cover di "se fossi un falegname"

  • Looks like he has a heroin itch / twitch

  • What year was this...look like 88-90??

  • 1993.

  • is he wearing a Gene Simmons shirt

  • by the way...no one sings it like bobby darin

  • your right my friend....love this though!

  • thank you and same here

  • *melt*

  • YES I'd marry you! He could sing the ingredients from a soup can label and it would be awesome!

  • I was just thinking he could sing the phone book and make us love it!

  • why does he act so gay...i don't think he was, cause he had wife and kids.....but why does he act it?

  • He's not acting gay, he's Jonesing. He needs a fix...

  • what gay??

Weird!!Percy is not Gay and he doesn't act like a gay,the guy is a pure womanizer

  • the most stupid comment on youtube!!!!

  • yeah I'm sure that's the most stupid comment you've heard. You haven't been around YouTube long have you?

  • lol no but im sure it is the most stupid...n ur damn rite...i saw one vid of bobby darin singin it with just a guitar n he nailed it

  • jajajaja

  • Robert. Yes I will!

But will there be any issues with the age difference?

  • poof

  • I'd marry you if you were on the dole! x

  • Love him...great version!!

  • excelente y cantando con una sola guitarra!!un maestro!!

  • Kevin Macmichael was a great guitarist for Robert during this period. RIP Michael, a fan at the time and still today.

  • I don't think Robert Plant took his beauty and talent seriously. That was then and now i think he takes it seriously.

  • i so love this , one my favorite all time songs how sweet robert you sang this and brought it back ty love, love you too much muahhhh

  • will a B.S.A. licence do

  • Yes, Robert I'll marry you! :)
