Conan is great, but Jay is a legend of the field as well. I don't dislike either of them, as I'm fairly mutual. Both shows were failing in the ratings at the time, and NBC devised the plan to remove Conan and give Jay back the show. "Conan and I have kids, you have cars, Jay." Really, Kimmel? Did Leno give Conan a nightly paycheck for "The Tonight Show w/ Conan" or was it NBC? They made the decisions. So Leno went back. He has to pay bills too. Conan's new talker is successful on TBS: The End.

Jay is such a statue. He 100% depends on his written material, and if a joke bombs, he just goes on to the next one without ever acknowledging the audience's respons. Conan's jokes are almost funnier when they bomb, because he plays off it and ad libs an even funnier comment about the failed joke. That's because Conan is a talented comedian and a genuinely funny person, whereas Jay appeals to a very specific crowd that won't laugh unless the joke has a good punchline.

He simply had to big an Ego to move up a half hour(Mind you Leno's show would have been 30 minutes long, Conans still an hour), so he resigned. Leno was offered the position, and he accepted(Would you have said different?).
