It's simply repetition of action/result over and over again until the animal's brain is rewired to always expect a positive or negative outcome from the action. However, if that same snake charmer went anywhere near that snake's eggs, all of this "training" would disappear.
Actually, most charmers leave their snakes exactly the way they would be in the wild. Why would they sew the snakes mouth shut? It'd make it impossible for the snake to eat, & the snake would die, & what sane charmer would want to either spend the money on a new snake, or have to go out & catch one every few weeks or months? Good charmers hypnotize snakes & not hurt animals for money.

Dude, many of them do de-fang them or sew their mouths shut. And yes, they go out and get new snakes frequently. The other thing they do is train them by putting hard objects in front of them so that every time they strike it causes pain, and they learn to avoid striking. I don't fault these people for doing this. Cobras are nasty, disgusting animals anyway.

ACTUALLY, the noise the instrument makes isn't part of the equation. Snake's can't hear very well through the air, they can only sense vibrations through the ground. I've toured all over India several times. I am a "Jadu Guru", a "Mandrigan. a "Magician". The sad truth is the fangs are broken off & the venom sacs removed. Some of the snakes die from having the venom sacs removed and the ones that don't die you'll notice tend to very lethargic from not eating right. The "Charmers" have to agitate the snakes to get them to puff up. Abject poverty drives men to do cruel & crazy things. Sittin there in the know, with cobras near my face, I was still afraid.
I believe the snake is essentially used to the charmer's act, which explains why it ignores the charmer and his pungi and faces the strange guy with the camera. I bet it didn't like seeing its reflection in the lens.
btw, it works because the snake is kept in a basket with flowers that keep it in a drugged state. It responds to pretty much anything in the same way. They have also had their fangs removed. One of this guy's snakes (he has a couple when i saw him) wasn't drugged enough (it had been out of the basket performing for too long in the fresh air) and struck out to bite my friend, unsuccessfully.
I was backpacking in Jaipur this Easter ('09) and met this same snake charmer (and his friend). He put his hat on my head. I think he was at Amir Fort....
all of you r right in a way. believe it or not, their r lots of different ways to do snake charming, movement of the pipe is one of them. it also depends on the snake. different techniques are passed down father to son.

They can't hear, but part of the movement is the vibration. Through vibration the snake can still tell when the note is off key. lol.

Yeah, just goes to show you the convoluted logic behind their religious beliefs. Can't kill a cow to prevent starvation, but it's OK to extract fangs from cobras in order to feed my family. Well, in a country over populated by both humans and snakes, I'm throwing in with the premise that humans are more valuable than snakes.
