Got to see The trio play this today. Greatest concert of my life, only 20 or 30 people there and i made sure to be in front. Many times i've been let down by performers seeing them in person but this was extraordinary. They played with such grace and comfort that it was like being in your own living room watching it. They were in a rush to leave for a second show but still signed my cd and chatted. Max Schaaf was a gentleman to speak to and didn't rush leave.i'm waiting to up load the video now,
If 'Back to the Future' starred Joscho Stephan and was about Gypsy Jazz, Marvin Reinhardt would've rang his cousin to say, "hey Django, you know that sound you've benn looking for? Well listen to this!......"
This is fantastic but i think the best version of nuages is the rosenberg trio live at samois 2008, or django reinhardts solo version of it after the war. But i may just be biast because i kind of model my self of stochelo. He's my hero.
JimmyDeLocke, and others I couldn't agree more. Not that I don't respect others comments, because I do and won't say negative things about their opinions. This guy plays with a lot of emotion, feeling, superior technique, and everytime I have seen him play the same song, there are so many elements that are changed. But it seems you either really enjoy him or you aren't so impressed. To each his own, but I happen to think he is fantastic.
I can't believe there are people who criticize this guy's playing. It must be jealousy. He has mind boggling technique, great energy and boundless imagination. If that's bad I hope I can be that bad someday. JOSCHO RULES!!!!
I agree with manoir83 to a certain extent. I left his concert after 20 minutes as I felt bored and uninvolved. He seemed curiously detached from his playing and the sound was like a regular dreadnought, not a Macaferri gypsy guitar. It was maybe the amp but it lacked that authentic sound and came across more as smooth jazz with big fat sounding notes instead of that delicious evocative manouche twang of the strings. He needs to change the sound and live the music from the inside out with feeling
technically fantastic...but I dont get the feel of clouds when I close my eyes and listen to it..it is a display of prowess, the feel is missing. Its all scales and speed
That's life! When you're making love do you get it all at the same time? Technique, speed and feeling? The prick is made of the thing that's missing at the moment!?
This is what people said about Charlie Parker who couldn't listen fast enough. "Don't get the feel of clouds"? Is that the official standard? You seem to be looking for a particular feel and programme in this tune that YOU want...but that's not the only way to play it. That being said, he is in love with a particular feel and certain riffs, so many of his recordings sound similar. Is that a defect or just a matter of taste? -- some people like pepper on every dish. I happen to like this pepper.
You sound like a person with severe, personal low self-esteem. What are your accomplishments, qualifications, capabilities?? Are you a musician? If so, do you have any videos on Youtube so we can evaluate your talent, prowess and professionalism?? Tell us where we can see something of your professionalism !!
Yeah? Well I'd get a refund on that psychology degree if I were you. And if you wanna reply to someone (and you want them to KNOW about it-maybe you didn't?), you click "reply" in the corner of their comment. I'll message you a myspace where you can hear me play (since I guess you can only have an opinion about someone if you're better than them at what they do-I better take back all those snide remarks I've made over the years about Kenny G's Sax playing and Celine Dion's singing too) . . .
. . . but it's not Gypsy Jazz-that's just a side obsession for me. If you disagree with my comments then knock yourself out, but before you go demanding credentials to express an opinion, then diagnosing a case of "severe, personal low self-esteem", might we take quick peek at your "professional" accolades as a psychologist?

Are you guys crazy? THIS is rubbish. LOTS AND LOTS OF NOTES, then a pause, then LOTS AND LOTS OF NOTES, then a pause. He doesn't even have bad ideas-he has NO ideas. So you can play really really fast-who cares? Tons of people can. Chops are a means, not an end-you're just some athlete. Him and Tommy Emmanuel are a match made in Heaven-nothing but novelty spectacles masquerading as artists. Stop defiling a beautiful tune and do something meaningful.
Oh ... babsyco ... what an amazing musician and critic you are. I'm so glad I was able to see your opinion because you are obviously of a superior musical talent and speak from an informed and elevated point of view. Right ... okay I will never listen to this incredibly talented young man, with al of his heart and soul since you, babsyco have showed me the way. Thanks for your brilliant insight.
No problem-and thanks for yours. I was especially greatful to hear you're critique on my OWN musical knowledge and talent-as you astutely gleaned from my comment, I thought I was an amazing musician with a superior and elevated point of view, but I'm finally liberated from that delusion, as I now know my opinions differ(ed-past tense of course!) from yours.
Actually if I could be so bold as to ask your help on just ONE more topic-what do you think I should do with my hair?
. . . ''T'' for 'tendentious', 'T for 'Tenesmus', 'T' for 'Terrible', and with any luck, 'T' for 'Terminable'. I'll leave the other letters 'Terra incognita', but that's the way I feel. Feel free to disagree-we're all different after all, but if you feel like make more cheap quips about how great you think I think I am, try using a 'letter' theme this time-it's much more fun than boring old sarcasm.

Oh, and just one more thing-no heart, no soul, just tasteless tirades of tones TYPICAL of a tacky trick-toting tit whose tome of creative tactics is clearly Tabula Rasa, tainting whatever tune they touch.
That's 'T' for Tawdry, 'T' for 'Tarradiddle', T for 'tedious', 'T' for 'tiresome' . . .
Joscho...for the love of humanity, dont ever play with Tommy again, he makes you suck. Play with these guys or other gypsy jazzists. PLEASE!!! 10/10 vid
Wow? There are many parts that are played by Joscho with consecutive down strokes and consecutive upstrokes with his pick, excluding the tremolo strokes with the middle finger on the chords. These are all marvelous techniques but Joscho is one of the few guys on earth who know to apply it into music.
Fantastic player,a great inspiration to hear and see this virtuoso perform here, and you have taped this Julian, I think Django is having a Ball in that other Dimension and giving us his greatest smile,no words man great Stuff,Victor.
Awesome: I had the honor of hanging with Joscho in NYC three years ago. It was stunning to see such a talent, just sitting there, three feet away playing the most beautiful and scary stuff you've ever heard in your life! Angelo Debarre and Samson Schmitt were on hand as well as a bunch of other Gypsies: Joscho was on fire! I found it compelling that he would quote Clapton and other rock players in his solos... not heard of elsewhere.
Thanks for this: beautiful arrangement of a classic tune!
Wow! Thanks for sharing your experience and impressions!
I have to admit, that I first got in contact with his music via YouTube. Tommy Emmanuel mentioned him in one of his videos and afterwards I realized that they already played a couple of shows together (and that he´s from Germany). That´s why I took my cam with me that night and asked him for permission to post it here. And what can I say: Besides all the other great songs, "Nuages" is my personal highlight of the show!
Well, that's a cool way to END the day. But I'm also waiting for some new energetic riffs from YOU, to properly BEGIN my working days... :) I know you're "cooking" something good. All the best to you, too!
Haha...he really goes insane. Brilliant performance! I know that he performed some shows with Tommy, so I guess they are friends. Hopefully, I´ll have the chance to see them together on stage one day!
