I've seen your work and they are really good. 2 questions.. 1. Do the results stay forever or do you have to get more botox every now and than? and 2. Can you make a round jaw/face into an ovalish/squarish face?
@okaymichellee 1. no, but with a few rounds it can last longer and longer especially if i target the junction of the bone and muscle where the overgrown bone can sometimes start to soften as well. 2. not always. if the muscle is the problem then yes. if bone and fat are more prominent then no. :)
@yellow7purple 1. yes, if it is bone, you will probably need a bone reduction. 2. complications you need to speak with someone who does it to be fair. i don't. 3. yes it would be uncomfortable with a long recovery. 4. unlikely braces would make that change but again you have to ask a specialist like an orthodontist that question.
@yellow7purple botox jaw reduction is really for the muscle. if you bite down, and it is very hard and big, then you probably are a good candidate, obviously depending on how much bone and fat in addition you have.
Hi, I'm in my late 20s. Half Asian, half caucasian with a pronounced jaw line. The side that I chew on seems to be a little larger, giving me an asymmetrical appearance. Although my case is not severe, I'm conscious of what my face looks like especailly when I smile. Losing weight doesn't achieve that delicate feminine look in my facial features that I want. Doctor, is this procedure suited to people who don't have a severe problem? Am I too young to start botox? Are there any side effects?
@FrecklyLibra you are not too young. if your muscle feels very firm when you bite down then you are a candidate. there really is not much risk if you go to an experienced jaw reduction injector. if you go to someone who does not know what he is doing it can affect your smile or bite. and yes, it is suited for people without a "severe" problem, as i do it for simple cosmetic reasons all the time. :)
i do have a big chicks, since i was teenager wanted to stop all the laughs, i am not fat though, so u dont recommend the bone reduction. how about if i do the buccal fat removal then botox?would that work Dr?does buccal and botox procedures bring a major different as same as bone reduction?thank u
@Miss0somi buccal area removes the buccal area which is between the upper cheek and the jaw so it is an entirely different area. if you are below 30 years of age, i typically do not recommend buccal fat removal because in your 30s and beyond you will lose it then it becomes an endeavor to put it back in.
Oops, i didn't catch the end of the video, I see why you say to avoid surgery ...but I am still curious about how my overbite fits into things? I've always had an overbite and I was told that If i wanted braces I had to have the overbite dealt with first, I'm assuming that meant surgery?
@Reasonz4right i would like to clarify: surgery to shave the outer jaw bone is not great in my opinion. however, if you are talking about moving the jawbone in or out to help with your bite, that has nothing to do with this kind of botox or the jaw shave surgery i am talking about. what you are referring to is orthognathic surgery which is a big procedure but can have great results especially if you have an overbite. i do not do that kind of surgery though.
@samlammd Thank you for your reply doctor. So let's say I have only a slight overbite, does it matter what order I do the surgeries (corrective / botox)?? Can i do the botox before my corrective procedure? Thanks
@Reasonz4right botox only slims the outer jawline. it does nothing for the front part of the jaw where the overbite is. and yes, you can do the botox before the jaw surgery. no problem.
what would make you decide to do botox on the jaw as opposed to surgery? what are the pros and cons of each. Also, if i have an overbite? Do I need to get actual surgery before I do this?? Thanks
i usually do not publish units here. it is all in the technique to get the good results. how you distribute and approach the area. side effects would be lumpiness or trouble chewing. i have seen those issues in the remote past. however, nothing in a few years because i have truly refined my technique.
Hi there, well when im really slim some say my jaline is squared and when i gain some weight my face looks round. My jawline is really hard. I do have a problem with grinding my teeth at night therefore my jaw is alway aching. my boyfriend always says i have a fat face and i just really want it to look more oval. how much will this procedure cost?
sorry, i don't publish prices here. you can email marcy at lamfacialplastics [dot com] for a price. i would have to see you to see if you are a candidate since it has to be muscle that i am working on.
Dr Lam i want to get botox with my jawline i dont have a big bone nut recently i realized my muscles r too big, so how many units do i need to have? and how many sessions? please reply
typically one session every 6 months. hopefully after a couple of rounds you will get greater longevity. i would need to see and feel your muscles to estimate distribution of quantity. that is something i don't like to announce on here because i would like to see you in person for that.
generally maximum is between 6 weeks to 6 months. slimness entirely depends on how thick the muscle is. if you bite down and it is very very firm, then your chances are good. of course, i would have to diagnose it by feeling it myself to determine if it is very hard or not.
i have a question you were talking about bony jaw reduction and how its cut off in an un-natural way. well couldn't you do it so that it looks natural or in a way so that it matches the other side? because in my case the right side of my jaw is uneven.
my friend has had this done and she has lost her smile!!! She used to have a lovely big smile and now she can only smile very small and looks bad....she can't lift her top lip, to show her teeth! Will it go back to normal if she stays away from botox? ?
wow, i have never seen that. that is why i stay low and wide. i have never had this problem. good news is that botox is temporary and it should be fully restored.
my right side jaw is noticeably larger than my left because i chewed gum everyday, so if i stop chewing gum and other fibrous food, will the right side decrease in size? if not, is the procedure practiced across the states?
hard to say. possibly over time it would soften by itself. very few people do this procedure and even fewer do it well or safely because the botox doses are very high. i have many that fly in to see me. hope you can find someone to take care of it locally for you.
i don't post prices on here. i have been asked by my staff not to do that so i am honoring their request. it ranges on how much you put in, how you distribute it, and the experience level of the physician performing it.
Regarding jaw surgery it seems to be pretty common in the US for medical reason such as malocclusion. Are jawline shaving and orthognathic both equally invasive and carry similar complications?
Since dosage for paralyzing the masseters are relatively higher and administer in a single session, how is the dosage determine?
Will the massesters become hard related to atrophy over time?
the dose is pretty standard for me since most masseters that require treatment are pretty much in a defined volume range.
the whole point of treating masseters is to make them softer because they are already too hard from being enlarged and/or overworked so the masseters should shrink in size and become softer over time.
Dr. Lam, I have considered the buccal fat removal procedure to reduce large "chipmunk cheeks" and would like to know if it's possible to create a very drastic difference. Even in Extreme Makeover before/afters, I've noticed that the reduction is not particularly noticeable.
Dr. Lam, i have noticed that my left masseter is noticeably bigger than my right which i have concluded is due to habitually chewing on that side, and from chewing gum frequently...is a simple 'life style' change as mentioned in your video an adequate solution? eg. will the muscle naturally decrease over time if it is not used so excessively? Your advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks
i don't know that answer to that question. i would try the lifestyle change. i would also consult a dentist to make sure you are not grinding your teeth. if those two fail, there is always botox!
bite down. if the area is rock hard then botox will help. btw, buccal fat should not be removed. you are talking about bone shaving. buccal fat is higher up and not at the jawline.
Hello. I've been interested in this procedure for a long time. I notice a lot of people want slim, tapered jaw/chin lines, and the results show it. I am happy with my chin all the way to the jaw, but just below my cheek bone, the muscle is swelling. It's slightly more above the jaw, right below the ear, so I was wondering can this procedure help? I see the masseter muscle is pretty large, so... thanks in advance.
my opinion 25 a side. just make sure everything is marked precisely with calipers. at these high doses you can have uneven results by an unskilled injector.
hi. i wanted to know if there is anything wrong with my jaw besides it being square-shaped if jaw bone is very rigid and does not move as smoothly as it should. whenever i yawn or something it feels like my jaw is going to come apart. i could feel it sort of "click"- it even makes a sound. would this sort of treatment fix my jaw?
Hi, I am considering this treatment because I have a rather broader jaw than I would like. But I do not wish to re-do the treatment every 6 months or so, is it better to go with surgical jaw shaving for permanent results?
Lam, I really want to use BOTOX so I can have a more oval face, but kamranshere76's comment makes sense and is making me doubt going through the treatment. Since we use the masseter muscle every day of our lives, the toxins may be released, making the treatment less effective profoundly. Is kamranshere76 right? Shine some light on us, Lam. :)
that is a very bizarre comment. what is interesting is that the OPPOSITE is probably closer to the truth. this is the only area of the face that individuals have claimed permanence with the treatment partly the thinking is that with 2 rounds stacked about 6 months or so apart that the muscle to bone interface softens and there can be some permanent change to the outer bone contour. in other words, you might not need a bone shave. i think that is optimistic but interesting.
Ive heard that this is not a good proceedure for the jaw because of the constant use of the muscle thereby releasing the toxin from the muscle and lessening its effectiveness considerably. I was on the market for this because I have a pretty wide face but hearing this perspective changed my mind about it.

not really. i am going to perform a scalp reduction on a young man that has a scarred area of the scalp but that is not a normal thing that i do for aesthetic reasons. if you are talking about female hairline lowering, then i prefer to do that with grafts. you can search that video on youtube.
can you please advise if this surgery takes place in New Zealand. I'm part of the transgender community and have been dreaming of getting my jawbone reduced for years... I've just stumbled across your video by doing a google search on jaw reduction, please help me!!! Thanks doc
Hi I'm seriously considering this because I had severe bruxism, the right side of my face is much bigger then my left due to me grinding also I have an over bite on my right side which has added to this problem, despite the fact I had braces.
I'm wondering how much swelling can the botox take down? I have been offered an operation to remove the extra muscle mass but I'm concerned about the possible side effects. I'd really like recommendations/advice. I'm from London UK.
hi,plz reply.. i`m 22 i have jade face cut my jaw looks small and i have large fat skin on my face that continues over my jaw and gives me a double chin wat shld i go for ????
i have a problem with my jaw.. it's big so my face appear to be huge and triangle-shape... im afraid if i had surgery, it may cause a lot of risk, is it neccesary that we must have brace before undergoing the surgery???
lol. let's trade. i want a reduction and you want an augmentation. most likely you'll get an implant, but if it was possible, it would be awesome if we can switch bone mass.
Hi there. I noticed that no one had replied to your question so I thought that I would do you the honour! Anyway, if you want to increase the size of your jaw there are many surgeons who offer actual jaw implants. These are small implants which are placed on each side of the jaw bone. Type jaw implants into google and you'll find plenty of info on it and doctors who carry out this procedure. regards
Can I do anything to my cheekbones? They are too high, n outstanding... :/

1. i have no idea whether stem cells would help. sorry.
2. a day after the botox, you would not truly affect my botox negatively or positively with massage as it has "taken" in the muscle then.
3. the theory is that repeated botox to the masseter over time can shrink the bone but there is not clear study to prove it yet.

i have a problem with my jaw.. it's big so my face appear to be huge and triangle-shape... im afraid if i had surgery, it may cause a lot of risk, is it neccesary that we must have brace before undergoing the surgery???

where can I visit in northern California for this type of treatment? I have a square jaw line and my jaw muscles are somewhat pronounced.

What a great video! Dr. Lam seems very confident. I'll add him to my list of promising plastic surgeons. :)

lol. let's trade. i want a reduction and you want an augmentation. most likely you'll get an implant, but if it was possible, it would be awesome if we can switch bone mass.

Hi there. I noticed that no one had replied to your question so I thought that I would do you the honour! Anyway, if you want to increase the size of your jaw there are many surgeons who offer actual jaw implants. These are small implants which are placed on each side of the jaw bone. Type jaw implants into google and you'll find plenty of info on it and doctors who carry out this procedure. regards
