Furthermore - think of Harlock, Tochiro and other characters of the "Matsumoto-verse" as a stable of actors. He has re-used them for more than one story or type of story. Harlock is most familiar to us as the Space Pirate. But Matsumoto has used Harlock in a cowboy manga of all things!

Matsumoto attempted to do this with Yamato, but Nishizaki said 'no' to the idea of Harlock in Yamato. So it was left behind in development.

If you are confused by some fans saying that Captain Harlock was Kodai Mamoru - let me explain: That was -proposed- by Matsumoto as an element when the show was in development but it was never in the final version of the anime. Koday Mamoru is simply Kodai Susumo's older brother in the anime and nothing more. There is at least one NON-CANON manga that was made where that plot elemt was hinted at. But it's not officially part of the story anymore.

This is Space Pirate Captain Harlock. It is another series by Rejei Matsumoto, creator of Yamato (that's why the video is a little ironic) and yes, it is very much Japanese. It was done by the same studios, the same artists, the same creator at the same time as Yamato so I'm not sure why you think this one is so bad.

This is the ARCADIA from MY YOUTH IN ARCADIA, that I got on VHS in Japanese in 1984 when I visited Japan. Nothing can destroy the Arcadia, and it has twice the firepower of the Yamato.

You obviously never watched Starblazers growing up! In Japan, it was known as Space Battleship Yamato. Captain Harlock and his ship, the Arcadia, was a returning guest to the show. Look it up!

On the contrary, I watched Starblazers when I was a kid in the 80s. So I know all about it. I never lived in Japan, and I have the Yamato movie. This Arcadia clip I never seen before, and I dont like it - thats what I am saying.

Sorry, thought you didn't know. Yeah, the spin-offs are either hit or miss. The much more recent Capt. Harlock OVAs were not good at all, rather lacking. I never watched the one with the female space pirate so I'm not sure sure about that one.....

Yeah, Harlock never appeared in this series either stateside or in Japan. He did appear in Galaxy Express which was shown in theaters in 1980 as a double feature with the Robin Williams movie Popeye.

Same capital class ship, different variation remeber the real life Yamato had a sister ship the Nagato, therefore one can assume Arcadia is Nagato and was built for a different purpose all together.

The sistership was the Musashi. The Nagato was the preceding class of battleship built in the 1920s.

Musashi was actually a slight improvement on Yamato--the first ship is always a little bug-laden. Nagato was an older design, not bad, but too slow. Japan's most effect BBs in WWII were the upgrade WWI-era BCs from the Kongo class. As fast battleships in WWII (30+ knots, 4x2 14" guns) they were quite useful. They were probably the most effective surface warriors Japan had. Yamato and Musashi needed 3 more knots (they were rated at 27) to be effective.

..I'm a Hongkongese (living in HK). I've seen both "Yamato" and "Arcadia" TV (Cantonese dubbing) in my childhood(1970s). I bought the complete DVD box sets (3 seasons) of TV "Yamato"(Japanese Version with English/Chinese Subtitles) in 2003.
