Parky's final comment about it being great for music must sum it up. The greatest classic violinest ever, and the greatest jazz violinest ever making the sweetest music. That, actually, is what great music is about - enjoyment, class, quality. Never mind the genre, if it is the best, then it is the best. This is the best.
This kind of experience transports you to a higher dimension of life. This is a very exceptional piece of music played by two very exceptional artists. This piece and their interpretation will live for ever.
Words are simply not adequate to describe the feelings this kind of performance creates.
Agree mightily. Oil and water. That's the nature of good musicians: Navigating by their own view of the stars. 40 years ago I was trying to tell a friend to play for the audience (or at least my wild ears) , not his limited school-boy self. A month ago I was trying to tell a folk musician in his 70's to enjoy jazz and marvel at, it not try to join in as it would be like harnessing horses to a steam engine. The YM/SG partnership showed that GREAT musicians can bridge the divisions.
@teoxin thats about violine, i was playing a guitar since i was 7 and now at age of 36 trying to learn a violin and it's completely different - you have to feel every note
@guerracha It can feel like they don't make it like they used to, but I can assure you it's not true, you just have to dig a bit deeper than you're radio and other commercial avenues.

you see menuhins bow hand flattering. Its because he hat problems when he was old. Grappelli didnt have such problems. So his tone is stable in compare to menuhin.
Two great masters, who's individual sounds mixed to an incredibly smooth stirring landscape of music, both showing great respect for each other, while feeling no need to show off. Even though it's long gone, the fact that there has ever been such a moment fills me with joy and hope for the future of music.
Thanks a million, hopefully the guys at BBC will find a way to publish the full version. It would make my year. Thanks for posting.

Stéphane Grappelli, at the Bottom Line and the Bitter End in Greenwich Village during the early 1970s--you defined my youth. Thanks for your dazzling brilliance, youthful enthusiasm, and enduring musicianship.
Called Google's 'Help Center' and was told 'We don't care if it works or not, try the help page'. This surprised the heck out of me. When the 20-somethings finish their coffee maybe they'll look at it. Or maybe I'll call Vint Cerf at home :-) Still love it. I make plenty of mistakes myself.
I cried for days when Stephan died. First time heard him was with Menuhin playing 'Jealousy' (sorry, I'm an Ameircan) on my way to Berklee College of Music. I had the honor of hearing Maestro Grappellii play six times at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. I'm overjoyed that he lives on YouTube. -samg

As a teenager, I watched one late Saturday evening the original show of this and was amazed at how 2 giants in their respective, yet so opposite musical realms could create such wonderful harmony.
I prefer Grapelli. Menuhin is best, but Grapelli is storm, beter than best. It is hard to find somebody even close to those two imortal maestros, two genius of violin.
So sorry Mr Parkinson I had no idea you had the musical knowledge to pass such a comment! Perhaps you would like to inform Paul Merton how to improvise in comedy!
Both of them were such wonderful people in different ways.
Grappelli was so humble, there's a great documentary about him that shows him in his little flat where he used to play the piano (he was a good pianist too).
Menuhin was acutely intelligent and naturally elegant, and has helped many a budding violinist.
Stephane Grappelli: A Life in the Jazz Century (2003)
Very good, DVD includes old films of Grappelli and a This is you Life about him form the 70s. Doc was the labour of love by directors who self-funded th project.
Good Heavens, I got goose bumps three times during my very first hearing of this music, and I do not get those too often these days, Lord, Lord, marvelous magic moments, an insight into greatness it is, no less. Of course thanks to the incredibly kind soul who posted this, truly, we owe you a year of magic, all the good to you, cheers and good luck.
The debate was and has always been, which violinist is better. Grappelli is clearly the greatest jazz violinist ever, Menuhin falls under the same clasical category. Classical people hate to admit, Grappelli (yes a jazz violinist) is the greatest violinist ever. Clasical people, argue grappelli has no structure, but Menuhin has too much sturcture, and this vid proved that. Like someone already said Grappelli is a mistro, Menuhin is just good.
Menuhin played fantastic in that recording as he always has. I love the way you can feel the different styles of the two. When Grapelli launched into that improv, Menuhin put his violin down and gave him such a look like 'what are you doing son'!
Yes, it's in the title that they are playing "Jealousy". Did you know it was a Billy Fury song though? My comment was meant to be slightly ironic because I was aware that others had recorded it before Billy, most notably Frankie Laine. But it was a bigger hit for Fury, who reached number 2 in the UK chart with his version.
Master Menuhin may have played "Jealousy", nevertheless all he showed was admiration. It takes a great man to be able to see his limits and admire the talent he notices in others.
As for Mr. Grappelli, I have yet to see such serene a man while playing. Peaceful & astonishing. Simply outstanding!
We can all learn how to read and play music. Here is proof that it is all in the touch, interpritation and understanding. Grappelli was nothing short of a genius. Gives me pleasure every time!!!!!
If jazz is indeed considered and now accepted as an art form.... then Mr. Grapelli is with equal position as Mr. Menuhin....otherwise...classical Artist still has the authority!!!

i totally agree that is playing is more expressive when he was older. not militant at all, more romantic

Just for the record, I was joking. Vanessa Mae is an average professional at best- Grappeli and Menuhin were world-class virtuosos.
