  • Quel son, quelle technique - Bravo HBM - Et cerise sur le gâteau Pino Palladino à la basse, un son et un doigté de velours, quel bonheur ! Ce Sleepwalk, tout simplement sublime !!!

  • I am going to sell all my guitars now!!!!!

  • crap send you to sleep, brian setzer now that's the real deal on sleep walk.

  • @calderleyian10

whoooh... think before you call something "crap"! Brian's and Hank's versions are both beautiful and well executed... just different. I'm sure they would each say say the same for the other's work. Think "Little Wing" by Hendrix, Derrik & the Dominoes, and SRV. All different - each beautiful!!!

  • Will whammy bar use like this knock a strat out of tune as people always complain about? Or are those people just talking about more modern rock stuff?

I ask here because I assume anyone into guitar will be watching this video. Best version of the song I've heard!

  • @BlackAngusYoung

The Tremolo Unit on the Fender Stratocaster will not the guitar out of tune as long as the instrument is set up correctly.

  • @ralphitt Thanks. That's what people who seem to know what they're talking about always seem to say. I guess the hard part is to figure out who knows what they're talking about among all the different "tips" and methods for a correct setup.

I think sometimes people share seemingly cool but maybe flawed pieces of advice just so they're able to make an interesting/popular YT vid and appear to be sharing something new and useful.

Thanks for letting me know it's worthwhile to try.

  • @ralphitt I just put one together using only 2 springs, no string trees, and locking tuners. For a partscaster, everything turned out very surprisingly well and functioning properly without tuning problems as far as I can tell so far. Thanks for the encouragement!

  • guess who was david gilmours biggest influence was? hank marvin

  • i like how he picks with his wammy bar in his hand iswell

  • This is "Wonderful Land"!

  • @zwilgmeyer1 - "Sleepwalk" (type in Wonderful Land the Shadows)

  • I do not have words!

  • Looks like it from the DVD "Stratpack" recorded for the 50th anniversary of the Strat.

My buddy Albert Lee played too (with a sunburst Strat) with the Crickets and then did (what else?) Country Boy, the showstopper. Marvin's favorithe guitarist is, of course, Albert Lee...

    Rock ON!

  • Less is more.

  • In my opinon this is the best version of sleepwalk out there! It is clean and tasty.

  • I heard all the other artists backstage came to the wings to listen to Hank playing this one.

  • Hank Marvin playing Sleepwalk - tears come into my eyes - it's so touching and wonderful sound.

  • There is no One like Hank Marvin for this reason. Hank is so perfect he makes what he does seem simple and pure. His sound as has been pointed out in this thread is clean. There has never been or will there ever be One Like the Master. Hank Marvin. My Opinion.

  • the cleanest most pure sound ive ever heard not like so many people playing today try to force it you can listen to this and still have a conversation thats what music suppose to be.

  • Sublime !... , le génie , la référence dans la pureté du son. Merci HANK .

  • the master - enough said

  • Just amazing talent.....beyond words. Thank you so much for sharing.

  • Musique de très grande classe ; Hank B MARVIN, pas pour les pecnauds....

Réservé à l'élite... faire écouter cela aux hardrockiens, rappeurs ou amateurs de techno, c'est donner de la confiture aux cochons...

    Joel TERRYN

  • sooo good!

  • Has any axeslinger ever been as wildly under rated.......

  • Sigh!! Oh the memories :) awesome. I saw Cliff and the shadows in the Capital theatre Cardiff South Wales in 1961. Will remain with me for ever. Hank can make a guitar talk. Thank you u make my heart glow.

  • Can I say this is SPLENDID!?

  • Hank can make a red Fender Strat talk, roll over and sit up and beg.

  • The's pino in the back!

  • I actually prefer Amos Garrett's live interpretation.

  • Andy Summers said it best:" No one plays a melody like Hank." Beautiful....

  • Yes I played this in my band in the 60s along with all the Shadows singles and tracks off their first LP.

    No mistaking that Marvin sound!

  • Thanks for posting.

And good old Wix Wickens on keys

  • Comment removed

  • Beyond perfection, i am in awe watching this video, the tone, the timing, the feeling..!!! No words needed.

  • Even me who grew up listening to Metallica and Guns n Roses likes this...

  • mzis19.

thats because no one will ever be as good as him .he is special, and the best.

    les

  • This was one of the favourite nos of the Shadows that we played in the late 60's and early 70's,...played it around 4.00am in the morning when our Madras dance crowd were slowing down, and wanted numbers for "cheek to cheek dancing"!! Believe me we had encores for this number too....

  • Who needs lyrics?!!

  • good

  • Beautiful,....

  • just enough notes. perfect.

  • Just superb...what more can I say?

  • hank is one of those men who has definately gotten better looking with age he was quite geeky looking at his son's age, his son on the other hand wow I feel like such a cougar lol.

  • @junequeenofscots i couldn't agree more, wow ben marvin is gorgeous, i would have liked to have seen more of him in this clip lol

  • Legend!! 1:56 make my tear TT.

  • There were a lot of guitar legends who played at this concert and that is what makes this moment cool.

He did not come to show off.

Just clean, classic iconic tone and song.

Hank and Buddy Holly put the stratocaster on the map.

  • welldone jobe guys

  • The guy was my hero when I was a kid. Got me playing guitar, and yearning to own a red Strat! But please. He's 8 years older than me and STILL doesn't have a grey hair! It's a bit sad when we know that the once coolest guy around cant accept the aging process. Must be the Cliff syndrome. Mike Reid has the same hang up I've noticed!

  • @andydemp Dont want to be funny on this but my dad was 79 and still had coal black hair, its only Oxygen when it goes white anyway. So whats wrong with a bit of colour if it makes you feel better, Grecian 2000 only restores natural colour, and if Hank plays music the way he does hell i dont care if he wears green hair. Mike Reid isnt in the same league as Hank anyway

  • i liek it when i fidn out that a famous musician i liek has a son or daughter coz im always hoping that they will have somone cARRY ON THEIR LEGACY AND TALENT AFTER THEYRE GONE but at the same time i think how on earth does somoen start a family when theyre life is based on playing and writing music all the time theyre busy people but im glad to see they found a way

  • @danophile07 Its called marriage mate. Bless you

  • Don't you just hate it when the audience start whooping about half a minute into the song? It's like, 'duh... I've just realised what it is , oh I like this one, whoo...' . Nice one Hank - all the guys that murder this tune on YouTube should kneel at your feet....

  • I have a Spanish friend who comes really close to Hank Marvin - He's called Antonio Cano and if you close your eyes, it's as if Hank Marvin is playing! AMAZING!

  • As a great fan from The Shadows, like to play this on keybord, but can not find the sheetmusic , anyone knows where to find pls, Thanks and regards from Antwerp.

  • This is true classic..Hank was my Mentor....made me put the trumpet down (compulsory by my dad) and pick up a guitar about 1959 and the rest is history. Went to see him with Cliff and the Shadows at the Final concert ! (again) lol.. in Manchesr England November 2009 and it was great. His son is the guy to his right for a few seconds. I have watched him for years and he NEVER misses a note! unlike me :(.. I know you can't and it has too end soon...but May you rein for Ever Hank! xxx

  • In the 60's The shadows were using Fender tube amps w/JBL speakers in them. The lead guitar sound was a bit different when using VOX amp. Such difference in the instruments used made our band then loved the Fender tube amps. We also tried the Swiss echo delay unit but the Binson echorec made my Fender Strat sounded closer to Hanks distinctive guitar sound. I missed those guitar "INSTRUMENTAL " musics of that era.

  • a truly great player.

you dont last 50 years and be ordinary.

he has a great sound. that no one else gets.

  • love hank

when i was a kid , he was my hero

    still is :)

  • The vintage solo strat, that influenced so many stratplayers. Have a close look at Jeff Beck and his tremolowork.

  • MARVIN THE BEST FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!

  • simply, the best, and the only one.

  • Super:):):)

  • THE SHADOWS are the third most successful record selling act in british pop history. and its down to the fantastic sound of HANK MARVINS playing. no one ever got close to his tone and echo . neat licks the guys brilliant.

ive seen the shadows five times at different stages of there career. he really is the real deal.

he is GOD with a stratocaster.

  • @HITTHESKINS I've seen God with a strat, he couldn't hold a candle to Marvin. He agreed when I told him this, and I made him promise me he would stick to the harp.

  • Hank has been my hero since I was a kid in the 60s.....perfection of touch and tone, economy of effort and beautiful sensitivity in all his playing. A word of praise for the bass player as well because Sleepwalk is so dependant on a good bass to keep the lazy pace going and he does a great job.

    beautiful.............

  • To get this kind of guitar sound, you have to be first a good guitarist,on a Fender Stratocaster with a Benson Echo unit.

That's what my group did (in 60"s, Manila,P.I.) to come close with the music of the greatest guitar group that played on this earth."THE SHADOWS" of england!!! TOM.

  • First you have to be a good guitarist then you need a fender strat and a BENSON ECHO unit to sound close to HANK MARVIN of "THE SHADOWS" of england. The greatest guitar band that ever existed on the face of this eart.We used to play their music in the 60's.

  • I played through Echorec, but finally found the German Echolette closer to the Shadows sound...

  • This is perfect guitar playing. Clean, pure, beautful... I haven't heard anyone sound quite like Hank Marvin.

  • @mzis19 what????????????????

  • @mzis19 You are spot on 100% correct

  • eeerrrggh

  • SAY IT AGAIN

he's nothing compare to Hank Marvin

  • The best version of the song not on Paddle guitar !!

  • It doesn`t get much better than this - so dreamy!

  • this is the musical way to express relaxation!!!

  • First record I ever bought was Sleepwalk by Santo and Johnnie in around '59 and I used my own piggy bank money to buy it(well I was only 11 yrs old) As usual Hank does it great justice.

  • A classic.

He is a master with the wammy bar.

  • Hank Marvin was one of the first players I heard that inspired me to play guitar, he's fantastic, what a great tone!

  • Best moment of the Strat concert

  • yes, i agree!

  • Yes, Cool smooth Jazz whit a cup of wine, with me wife, in a sunset summer .

  • sound yekkkkkkkkkkkkkk.sorry hank das musique ist so sehr yekkkkkkkkk jan

  • Sweet song

  • Just cool-great tune,great guitarist

  • This life version of Sleepwalk by Hank is a slow tempo one.

I rather prefer the version on one of their first records with others like Nivram, Shadoogie,..., close to another duo Santo & Johnny's.

Hank's style is lean, smooth and bluesy. His performance is impeccable, his only presence

    filled up the stage.

  • awesome ...hanks a legend

  • Hey, Hank, the 80s called -- they want their glasses frames back!! LOL

Yes, the original *IS* timeless -- don't get me wrong -- a superb song that can be played many ways without losing it's emotional impact.

For all those who arguing 'Sleepwalk' versions, don't forget Chet Atkins, Nokie Edwards, Danny Gatton, and Jeff Beck -- to name a few -- all moved enough by it to want to play it their way, not copy S&J....!

Wonderful to hear Hank doing his own version. Thanks for posting it!

  • I don't get all talking and talking and talking of many people about this video... listen and enjoy it. Thanks lmj22.

  • good, talk what u want, that is my opinion.

  • too slow.much to slow.bridge poorr

wrong notes hank van play much better thank you kindly tino

  • Let's hear you version chum(p).

    Thank you kindly.

  • I'd have to agree with Vonka here...

Taking 4:30 to play a song that's 2:10 long... I'm guessing he needs the time to clear his mind and actually remember the notes? At his age I wouldn't be surprised... Not to mention without the right kind of nuts, Fender bridges suck. Bye bye sustain and tuning stability.

And as far as hearing my version of it, give me a day or two to get my camera fixed and working again...

As far as Strat players go: David Gilmour>Hank Marvin.

  • What are you two on about...? It's a chilled, relaxed version...that's like saying Hendrix played Little Wing too slow when playing live, because he struggled to remember where the tune was going. Come on people...THINK about these things. To be honest he can play it whatever speed he likes.

  • Thing is the song itself is already a chilled, relax song. Chilling/relaxing it any further is just pointless; the listener loses interest.

And Hendrix was stoned out of his fucking mind 99% of the time so I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he actually had forgotten where the song was going. o.o

LSD has it's rather powerful..."creative" effects though, and I honestly doubt Hendrix would have been as good without it.

  • Listen mate, there's too many arguments on here...that's YouTube's thing it seems these days...I say this, you say that, we call each other cocks...and no constructive thing is said at all. But yeh, I've heard The Shadows early 60' version...it's nice...but this Hendrix comment, sure LSD may have enhanced certain lyrical themes but Hendrix was rampantly creative musically all the time...anyhow, my point being that I don't like arguing...we like in a BIG old world and at least we care about music

  • As a guitarist myself I'm usually sold by the person anyway...so if Marvin wants to play it this way I espect it...same with Keith Richards, Clapton, Page...they made it in the first place...so if they wanna take it down a different route I'm fine with it. You can't be a true music lover or indeed a musician unless you embrace the FEEL of something, as long as there's ome feeling and some heart and sul in it then they can play one note for all I care.

  • I write this from returning from the pub so forgive the poor spelling! Hehe.

  • As someone else commented on youtube; arguing over such banal points is like winning at the special olympics; you might win gold, but you're still a retard; no offence to the spec olympic dudes.

  • If every guitarist who take LSD would be Hendrix . well... there would be a shitload of Hendrix noways

  • RTG91, I'm not sure why you're disrespecting one of the first and greatest instrumental electric guitarists, or the strat's bridge. Fender's trem design on the strat was by far the most stable trem of its time, and remained the most stable non-locking design until the 2-point floating design by Wilkinson decades and decades later.

Hank isn't my favourite guitarist, but I respect him immensely. I'm a fellow Satch fan, but Joe's version never sat well with me. Not a nearly bright enough tone.

  • Not necessarily disrespecting him; just questioning his thought process with this song. As I said, the song itself is already a slow song. And Fender bridges are so bad it's depressing. I've played dozens of strats and the second I use the whammy bar at all, instant detuning. They're fine if you have the right kind of nut, but if you go with any non-lubricated, correctly slotted nut, it's pointless.

Satch used a bassy tone intentionally for mellowness; much better than slowing it to 20BPM...

  • I believe Hank has performed a thoughtful, subtle version of this classic-and he nakes it sound like sleepwalking...he has a great touch-Being pedantic about Strat bridges is beside the point-it stays in tune to me ear...

  • You're a joke!!

  • lmao...

  • I like to see all the Fender amps behind

As always: Hank is the very best *****

    Ivan Demarez

  • Like father Like son

  • shadows shadows shadows shadows where art though thee hiding now? please go back to youthness and play again.

  • Kinda like a song you'd love to listen to if you were on a vacation in the carribean, Hawaii or anyplace like that

  • is the man on the keyboard not paul wix wickens from the band of paul mccartney?

i like this song so much from hank(the shadows)

  • Does anyone know if this is on DVD?

  • yeah, look on amazon

  • the stratpack live in concert

  • Fabulous. 5 Stars.

  • This the reason I started playing the guitar in 1960, was because of music like this, The guitar was my first love and I still play today and I am now 65 years old.

  • Been a Shadows fan all my life,I,m 60,I still cannot understand how so much feeling can be put into a simple tune like this.

  • No training any more..

Clean and a crazy dance routine.

    Status Quo,Eat your heart out...

    Rgds Ozz

  • Another great melodic sound from Hank.

Vive Hank et long succès !!!!!

  • A very clean and tasteful player. As the great Count Basie once said-it's not not the notes you play, it's what you leave out. Are you listening, miketribute?

  • I like that quote. Roger Waters was once quoted as saying he wasn't "fast" so he made sure everything he played was "pretty"..I think that's the word he used, and this is "pretty"... Nice post.

  • Hank Marvin is the King Of Melodic Guitar Playing! Tell me....who plays melodies nowadays?

  • never mind the detractors, you have to be a world class guitarist to play melodies. There is no room for errors and no hiding place.Any Tom Dick or Harry can play fast music and cover their errors.Listen to Julian Bream playing the Vihuela or the Lute, and you will have reached the greatest master of the plucked strings.

  • Absolutely correct! I've heard people with not so much talent 'showboating' at a hundred miles an hour and say that they wished they could play like Hank!

  • fuck you miketribute1.

  • Miketribute, I shouldn't respond but have too. Obviously you have never seen Hank in action. If you could half play as well as he does you would be somebody mr.nobody!

  • Well said. I would have just called him(miketribute1) a wanker

  • anyone who plays half decent guitar knows that hank is just a cosmetic guitarist...its all basic.....absolutely nothing clever...

  • Except his compositional skills, of course. And his tremelo and phrasing. Just like Dave Gilmour is nothing clever, but awesome. What does "clever" mean to you, guitar-wise? Speed? I guess Hank Marvin being one of the most widely known guitarists ever is pure coincidence. What he really needs is some goddamn sweep picking, sure enough!

  • basic but really hard to play it that perfect!

  • miketribute1, It's basic playing but it does the job and it's incredibly tasteful don't you think? His tremolo work is brilliant and his bends are always pitch perfect. What more can you ask for? What do a song like this benefit from a 200 notes per second solo? Would some tapping or some diminished arpeggios make this better?

  • yeah i was just pissing with ya all ..he has a great touch....lol

  • miketribute1. Sure he's no virtuoso but he has an excellent sense of melody and has his own trademark sound and don't forget that he's more than likely responsible for much better guitarists than himself picking up the instrument in the first place. If you do play guitar then from one guitarist to another it's not a competition, enjoy what you do and if others enjoy it even better

  • you are a complete arse

  • and your point is??

  • Seltzer must have wings coming out of his back to be better than this. Marvin's '61 version shags Seltzner!

  • how can you speak them 2 names in the same sentance......an its setzer you ignorant nob...this is not even the starting of a boil on the arse of setzer....you obviously have no musical knowledge my friend

  • also a very moving piece of music-

    To love is to suffer

xx and anything played by hank is simply fab

    xx

  • jammer dat het geluid zo zacht is.

  • Setzer is the best!!!

  • Great version but I gotta say larry carltons is better. I like satch's version too.love the shads tho'

  • The most beautiful and moving piece of music I have ever heard

  • Setzer's version is the best rendition of the oldie, hands down.

  • You must be joking me...

  • sorry mate, fraid not. Setzer's live solo is perfect. i appreciate the fact you didnt call me names and tell me my opinion sucks, and for that I ask you who's rendition do you prefer to listen to?

  • Hi SpiriToftheSiouX. I have to hold my hands up and say that Brian Setzer's version is the first one I heard and I think it is AWESOME!! It is from the live in Japan dvd. I just think that this version( Hank Marvin's) is a much more romantic version, compared to Setzer's 'Big Band' sound. Love listening to 'em both for different reasons.

Best regards from England - Paul.

  • Setzer's verison is pretty good, this one is great and Satrini ( don't if i spelled that right) is awesome but there's no beating the orginal in my opioion.

  • Go ahead and vomit in your"no taste bucket" Then stick it on your head. A perfect fit, with your name on it!! Now try to show some tact here, if possible.

  • good reply for that discusting remark!!

  • wonderful version...almost as good as the original Shads studio version of years ago. Marvin must have made millions for Fender...even I bought a strat and played in a band in the 60s!!

  • great,great....i love this song very very very much,man...

  • Sweet! I didn't think that I could like a version better than Carlton's or the orginal, but I do.

  • I played this song in our school's morning prayer gathering in '63. This must be the most beautiful recording of the song...

  • Has anyone every seen the Derek Trucks version of this song before?

  • Sweet Soul soother!

  • Hank always played this tune just right. It beats the Santo & Johnny version anyday!

  • excecllent sounds hank is the best by far . sorry but who is ben ,please update me thanks

  • Poor version of the 1959 Santo & Johnny original, also on YouTube.

  • it's rare to see such a sweet music

  • i listen to this everyday...and i have the dvd and i listen on youtube and i listen in my truck i listen to it on my psp, my mp3 player..this version makes me tear up everytime i hear it...it is simply the best !!! thank you hank ben and the band....hank is the best !!!!

  • sod it! I`m diggin my old tennis racket out of the cupboard, I`m sure it`ll still be in tune, sod the wife and kids, I wanna be a guitar god all over again!

  • :))

  • recomend this to anyone who`s stressed out, it`ll chill`em right out.

  • beautyful

  • thank you very much

  • Thank you ımj22
