Tamileelam was occupied by the Europeans in 1495. Technically we are fighting for independence for more than 500 year.

The British combined Tamileelam and Ceylon for administration purposes. When they left, they gave independence for united Tamileelam and Ceylon. Since Ceylon people are majority they took all the power.

First, we peacefully requested something like a Canadia Quebec system. What we got was death and destruction.

This is exactly what we tried at the beginning. The Mahatma Ghandi style sathyagraha! Those who participated in the sathyagraha were brutally attacked and in some cases murded. Remember what has happened in Burma a few months ago? Same stuff, but a lot more people got killed. Then we decided to meet force with force and we are here. Tamileelam translates to "country of Tamil speaking people". There are Hindu, Muslim and Christian Tamil speaking people live there.

The region was a separate kingdom before Europeans arrival. Yes it is mostly the northern and eastern part of the island whereas the Singhalese live in the southern part.
