I remember being 7 years old, in 95, sneaking my walkman into bed lol and listening to pearl jam all night. Back when "wishlist" was out, as a kid I was like man this is freaking awesome. Eddie Vedder is an icon and only improves with the years.
at the end Letterman mentions a documentary about Buck Brannaman (then EV said "Buck" which is its title). the documentary is inspiring. I'm glad Just Breath is used in the documentary. it matches beautifully with the film.
When a man includes this song for his "friend, playmate, lover" to show how he feels, he will love her always and always wish to be with her no matter what he professes...Being apart is temporary in the grand scheme of things.
Vedder was my favourite singer of all, but now he is no better than a ordinary folk singer: no originality, no surprise in his songs, no anger, not even melody. Monotonous and boring, sings like a tired man . Sounds like he records every jam session he's having at home and then releases it as a new track. He should ve died if he was to achieve greatness - now he is just good old boring uncle Eddie - a guy who you would let babysit your kids. You won't let old Eddie do that, will you?
@murshata Thanks for blessing us with your vast knowledge of musical brilliance. Just like every other pedantic teacher, wildly ostentatious about his own abilities to achieve said greatness, or even recognized anything close to the light. I'm sure you're on a first name basis with mediocrity- because one usually doesn't have to insult when they've achieved and are happy with their own space on the earth. G'day!
@ABintroSPECTOR1 I wholeheartedly agree! I love when musicians explore other avenues. It shows they have depth and can evolve. The reason we all loved Pearl Jam in the beginning was their courage to do something new and different. Why shouldn't be allowed to be as courageous now? Only simple minds reject change in the face of mediocrity.. Thanks for an intelligent rebuttal to a silly statement :)
Developed in the 1880s, the ukulele is based on two small guitar-like instruments of Portuguese origin, the cavaquinho and the rajao, introduced to the Hawaiian Islands by Portuguese immigrants from Madeira! WE ARE GREAT IN EVERY CORNER OF THE WORLD! our ancestors brought culture and civilization to the 4 corners of the world ladys and gentlemans :)
"If I had this guy's voive, you can all kiss my ass!" Brilliant. Not easy to get a complimet from Letterman. Thank you for posting this, had not heard it prior.
Eddie and Pearl Jam stayed faithfull to their music and that´s what counts!!! In July I will see them live again in Stockholm. Thank you for your music and beeing yourself guys!
Music needs to go back this this sort of beautiful simplicity again...I'm always blown away 100 times more from a guy performing with an acoustic guitar (or uke!) alone on a stage than a rock band with stacks of Marshall amps.
shirt and jeans, this dude is so simple, just like thoreau said "simplicity simplicity simplicity!" hes really inspiring, his work with the WM3 and my favorite was the music he made for Into The Wild, by the best movie ive ever seen, but yeah its nice to have a regular guy thats making popular music today, i get tired of attention whores living in eggs....
Awesome one of the greatest voices ever. I know Cat Stevens has not been the most popular musician for many years now mainly due to his choice of religion. However I must say if you can say that Eddie Vedder sounds like any other singer out there it would be Cat Stevens in his early 1970's prime.
@Ealts01 Soon Forget and the ukulele songs demos were circulating in the early aughts. I was being a little facetious, but dude has been rocking the uke for over a decade.
Yeah, anyone's else out there selling this many CDs on a Ukalele? All you Vedder haters and skeptics, come on, look what kind of people that never would have given a ukulele a listen are now big fans? He's opened up a world to those single-mindedness folks, the guys a master, give him credit.
it's pretty funny what happens to me right now: to be 32 and want to type "I'm in love with this guy" in youtube after watching this....I am a fan from the 90's era, when skipping out of school i watched "Alive" repeatedly on MTV and so many years passed over and i still hit "alive" on youtube...I just read the whole of the wiki pages about him and pearl jam and just to watch this video, this person, this 47 year old man to sing like he sings....well, i can't feel elseway but to say: what a man!
@sunnyday265 I know how you feel. I remember the first time i heard Pearl Jam on some kids walkman (ha remember those) on the school bus. I'm 34 and remember it like it was yesterday! All I could think was that it was the greatest thing I'd ever heard. So different. Kids today can't understand the way they changed music. They can love it like the rest of us but you had to be there to really get it. It was like someone turned the lights on and all the hairbands disappeared!
@mamamax212 Reading it again, i 'd just like to correct my previous note, i don't mean literally "in love" with him or the band, (like how we all do when we are 15!) but a deep admiration for all they have achieved as a group and each one as individuals, for their attitude towards life. And also,it's really difficult to have everything in life and still find things to inspire you and make you want to "produce" art.Or whatever that is.
@sunnyday265 I agree with everything you said but I must say that I understand the impulse to say "in love" with him. I was in love with him as a young girl so its like fondly remembering those feelings. Even if we're grown ups now its still fun to remember the infatuations of youth. Although I agree that now I love him/them in a different way. I think all along i was actually "in love" with the music but when your a kid love is love right :)
@sunnyday265 Yeah! I was listening to them in the 90s, but listening with feelings of teen rage, passion and thinking I knew it all, now I am a mother of two and finally have a bit more time to re-discover PJ and am listening with a bit more wisdom, heart and finally understanding the real meaning of his words. Thanks Eddie for keeping my soul alive!
@livefortodayPeace totally agree with you! that's just what I think, back on the 90's, the rage, the restless soul...now, I'm 38 (tomorrow is my BD, by the way) and I'm starting to comprehend his lyrics and understand them with the wisdom that come along with the years, I'm listening right now Ukulele songs, alone in my house, and this songs are my best BD presents! Good night to you all.
@edgalexmtz first of all, Happy Birthday! Then, i'd like to comment that they wrote the 90's songs (not counting the first 2 albums i guess) when they were around or in their 30s, which means that we couldn't evaluate (more or less) those songs earlier than at present (for us who mentioned we're in our 30s :). So for me, it's like I'm kind of relaxed for the years to come, they must be...fine!
@sunnyday265 Thanx for your greetings!!! and yes, I have this feeling that the best is yet to come...thank you for sharing your thoughts with me, best wishes from Mexico!!!
@mamamax212 A testimony to Eddie's integrity is that he doesn't play music to be famous. It's in his soul. That's the difference today. He and Pearl Jam have a huge following and they have maintained that audience without MTV, without appearing on American Idol, without selling their souls to the celebrity culture the world is caught up in. He would be playing music in a crowd of 50 or 10,000.Doesn't matter. And it's been amazing to see how much they have grown since 1992 and for the better!
@dancheyne I agree. I hate that people have made the guitar the single instrument of acceptance today. There are so many equally beautiful instruments if not more beautiful than the guitar and the ukulele is one of them.

What a talented man, from grunge to hard rock to acoustic covers to ukulele, with Vedder you never know, and also humble, he cleans his hand before shaking letterman´s out of respect. No question why he is considered a cultural icon.
mattmonks123...do you really think there were a bunch of managers and music execs that pushed him to make a ukelele album? Yeah, that has commercial accessibility written all over it. A real money maker. You're a quick one. He has been using the uke since at least Binural. I like the album and saw him at Copley in SD. Definitely sounds like no one loves Eddie better than you.
Listen: Nobody loves Eddie Better than me. Youtube Porch 92 - Eddie's in his prime. Jumping off stag girders like Spiderman. Eddie's an animal. A once-in-a-generation-talent - like Springsteen like that. Having said that:
THIS BLOWS.
Ed - Michael Jackson had this same problem. You need to stop listening people that rely on you for a living that tell you things like: A whole record of songs on the Ukelele? What a brilliant idea... 25-year-old Eddie woulda told ya - awful idea...
@MattMonks123 I don't think Eddie has molested any young boys....I would only listen to a portion of what 25 year me (or 25 year old EV) would say to me....wisdom comes with age....that album is about the lyrics...not the ukelele.MJ's problem was totally different & he handled it terribly...EV's circumstances have enhanced his music & career & his WISDOM lead him to conduct himself in a respectable and helpful manner. BTW I loved MJ's music. No disrespect to you...just my thoughts
At first I thought this was a love song about a relationship going through a rough patch, then during a bout of unbridled awareness I had another take on it, did anyone else get that this song was sung for his fans, trying to reach out to those that might be going through a hard time. Intimating that although he may not know you personally, he thinks of you or someone like you a lot, and though times may be tough we can suffer through it together, let the music heal you. Beautiful song.
omg...I heard this song in a movie theater before the movie started a long time ago...and I kept searching yahoo for it based on the lyrics I could barely remember...and I knew it sounded like Vdder from pearl jam...but I couldn't find it...and now...it is finally mine!
its amazing how when he first sang with temple of the dog, how he was so shy and had no confidence in his voice, and now he has one of the most timeless recognizable beautiful voices in music EVER!
It's pathetic that even with a tiny Ukulele, this guy can produce better music than these giant bands with most of their sound produced in fancy studios.
I know what you meant, but 'pathetic' is a harsh term for describing anything involved with music. If you would have said 'It's understood, that even with...' Or even 'knowing Eddie Vedder, wielding a tiny Ukulele, can...' I get the 'pathetic' part of your statement. Great music is hard to come by. When it comes to Vedder, nobody needs to get put down in the process, just realize they will come in second place, at best. By the way, I thumbed up your post!
@aerosmith1012 Clarence Clemons, the saxophone player for Bruce Springsteen and the E Streeet Band. He died the week that Eddie made this appearance on Letterman.
@RafaelSakae im not sure either, but hes also often playing a tenor uke... on his album his says hes almost always used tenor ukes when recording the songs.... so it could also be a tenor.. but im not sure..
I'm a fan of Greg, but your comment doesn't make any sense. Why are you even comparing the two things in the first place? Two completely different albums by two different artists. Ed released this album cause it meant something to him - just like everything else he or pearl jam has ever done. He doesn't give a shit if it compares to anything.

Beautiful song.

what kind of ukulele is that?
NightShadeGuitar 3 months ago
@NightShadeGuitar it's a Mya-Moe ukulele. i think Aaron Keim (from 'the boulder acoustic society') built that one for him.

omg...I heard this song in a movie theater before the movie started a long time ago...and I kept searching yahoo for it based on the lyrics I could barely remember...and I knew it sounded like Vdder from pearl jam...but I couldn't find it...and now...it is finally mine!

its amazing how when he first sang with temple of the dog, how he was so shy and had no confidence in his voice, and now he has one of the most timeless recognizable beautiful voices in music EVER!

@jduane1976 Totally agree :)

Eddie Vedder has changed since his "into the wild" album. He has changed his tastes completely. Listen to Ten. What a change !

It's pathetic that even with a tiny Ukulele, this guy can produce better music than these giant bands with most of their sound produced in fancy studios.
Chubzdoomer 3 months ago 132
@Chubzdoomer Or he just has a really good sound guy.
DeSilverware 2 months ago
@Chubzdoomer Not sure if pathetic or just awesome
eljefe0123 2 months ago
I know what you meant, but 'pathetic' is a harsh term for describing anything involved with music. If you would have said 'It's understood, that even with...' Or even 'knowing Eddie Vedder, wielding a tiny Ukulele, can...' I get the 'pathetic' part of your statement. Great music is hard to come by. When it comes to Vedder, nobody needs to get put down in the process, just realize they will come in second place, at best. By the way, I thumbed up your post!
milehighmayhem 2 months ago
@Chubzdoomer I don't know how pathetic they are - you are comparing them to Eddie Vedder.

might be on the threads already but who's CLARENCE? its on the side of his uke???
aerosmith1012 3 months ago
@aerosmith1012 Clarence Clemons, the saxophone player for Bruce Springsteen and the E Streeet Band. He died the week that Eddie made this appearance on Letterman.
RNerfe 3 months ago 2
It's a guitar player's approach to playing uke for sure. Look how he holds it, lol. I believe that's a Mya Moe tenor.
I love EV! Gotta love that voice, and he's like the epitome of cool.

@RafaelSakae im not sure either, but hes also often playing a tenor uke... on his album his says hes almost always used tenor ukes when recording the songs.... so it could also be a tenor.. but im not sure..

No offense to the alterno community here but what E.V. does is nothing compare to any of the stuff Gregg Graffin did on his album "Cold as the Clay"
francisbarbotin 5 months ago
@francisbarbotin
