Modern day christmas is a combination of the celebration of the birth of christ and the festives of Yule (the midwinter Pagan fest which you speak of)

the tree decoration for one is an old Pagan tradition. Coca Cola is actually the company that introduced the whole santaclaus thing to christmas, and santaclaus in his turn comes from a Dutch holiday on which Saint Nicolaas (Sinterklaas) brings gifts.
