However I do agree, want to wear it, wear it tucked in, and out of sight, and wear it to remind yourself of your faith and devotion, if you think leaving it in your pocket will make you forget. Although I was taught to wrap it around your palm and hold it if I wanted to carry it around or keep it in a box.
I'm glad I'm not the only one bothered by this. I was lectured by my mom once when I was 6 why a rosary is not a necklace and I've respected it ever since. I went to Catholic grammar and high school, and kids got in trouble wearing it too. I'm not the most religious Catholic in the world, but I find it extremely disrespectful to wear it as though it was jewelry, it is not! They are pray beads you pray with them, not accessorize with them!
i've been wanting to say this for a long time too! i wear the scapulars! i do not like when i see people wearing them, mainly because they really don't know what they are. they are unaware that you are supposed to pray the rosary with a ROSARY!
It's only offensive if you let it be, chill out. I wear mine everyday, as: Fashion, Faith, and Fullfillment. It is sacred, hence why I feel strong when I wear it.
And im not afraid to say it, this is vastly more common amongst black people than white, anyone who ignores this is a fool.
Its ok to notice the who's whys where's and what's of an issue, it does not make you a racist to point out something anyone with eyes can see.. it makes you a fool for trying to avoid something obvious... try talking about the ocean without saying blue, its asinine
I think we all can agree people can own anything they want that was never in question... but seriously what if people started using menorahs as back scratchers? Its a matter of respect or really just a matter of not being an ignorant dick.
@karlswansson People can own whatever they want. Some rosaries are quite beautiful and I would understand owning one as a collectible or antique, or as a family heirloom even if you never use it or aren't practicing or what have you. I do not understand wearing it around the neck, other than the practical reasons that were mentioned... but hey, people are going to do what they want with their possessions...
i think it's more of a cultural thing. I've been to catholic communities in different parts of the world and ive noticed rosaries around the neck in mostly latin american communities. in the holy land not so much. however, everywhere i see it hanging on rear view mirrors which seems more sacrilegious than around your neck
I sometimes wear rosary, tucked in if I wear it, as a statement of my beliefs in the catholic church. I understand were your coming from, but I don't use it like those douche bags do to " look cool"
I agree 100%. I was out shopping recently and saw a ton of rosaries being displayed as fashion in a trendy teen clothing store (U 21 or something like that). After thinking about it for a few minutes, my better half and I turned around and told them that it isn't really in the best of taste and told them what a rosary really is.
Ironically, a Muslim operating a kiosk in the mall that sold blinged out rosaries knew that they were for prayer and that such use was inappropriate.
You have seen War.This experience is unique to those who've been there.Yet each isolated person must struggle through battles of the Spirit, that they may be un-able to name or to know. The early Christians scratched the symbol of the Cross in the dust as a form of prayer & identity. At what point might some kid in the emergency-room on a gurney struggling through an O.D. hold onto that crucifix & see God's Love.If St.Paul had to get knocked off a horse, who knows how God may His Love to someone?
Technically-speaking yer right, but Life is a complicated journey.Life is a huge-struggle.A Rosary worn around the neck, may seem to be just a symbol of fashion. But objects carry a vocabulary of their own & like the parables of Jesus can serve as a focal-point for a conversation that might not have happened otherwise. When a Rosary is worn with the cross removed its message is (?).But,if the cross is still there, then us Lost-sheep have a potential-Prayer,Like the Good-Thief,hanging out with Jesus

you have a lot of respect for your rosary, i am not catholic but i can appreciate your concern for it, thank you very much for sharing

Wearing the rosary as a sacramental to obtain certain graces, similar to wearing a scapular, is fine, although it depends on one's parochial culture.
Wearing the rosary as a fashion statement, without any reverence for Christ or His Blessed Mother, is very wrong.
Remember, the word rosary comes from the Latin "rosarium," meaning rose garland. Each prayer is like giving flowers to Mary.

Thank you, this is not a piece of jewelry, go buy a nice cross if you wanna rock that.
And if your not catholic or Anglican you shouldn't even own one...
YOU DON'T SEE PEOPLE WALKING AROUND WAVING MENORAHS DO YOU?

All advertisement of Christ is good advertisement. "Smuggled theology" as CS Lewis would say.

I agree with you. The Rosary is not an adornement; it's a holy symbol not to be used in a light manner...
