I graduated from the University of British Columbia and back in the nineties I worked in Japan as an English teacher. Any questions? ROTFLMAO!!!!!
Well, this gets better and better.. an ESL teacher that does not understand the meaning of sarcasm. Do you really think I don't know what my profile says? Also for an ESL teacher you know just alittle bit too much about what language do controllers speak in different countries. I am a private pilot, and I did fly in most parts of the world and know how creapy Quebec airspace can be at times. What does an ESL teacher know about flying to argue about this particular subject?
@av7447 I don't know anything about flying. What I do know is air traffic controllers will speak their own language if they're talking to pilots from their own country on a domestic flight. If they're talking to pilots from another country on an international flight, they'll speak English. It's that simple.
from what I assume happened from hearing the tapes,
1. they experience a micro burst or downdraft, but i find that unlikely..
2. the pitot tube was frozen and fed wrong information to the autopilot which when it was turned on tought the speed was to low, to regain speed the autopilot descended the aircraft, ( at one point the copilot say ok cancel that ie: turn off the autopilot?)
3. the auto pilot was set for 1000ft instead of 10,000ft, so when he turned it on the aircraft descended.
I find the initial response from the Tower ATC horrible, "a pilot calls PAN PAN PAN (basicly I need help) and the ATC reply is contact Terminal..., when a pilot is in a emergency you don't want him to be playing around with the radio losing time when he's trying to call for help. ATC should have immediatly coordinated with terminal, (it's a simple push of a button for ATC with a direct voice line to the Terminal controller on duty!)
From what you can hear the copilot saying "what is going on!, what is going on!...ok ok ok we're climbing. ok.. wait a minute, cancel that, check PAN PAN PAN....." at one point the copilot calls himself "airtransat 110", when he is "air transat 211".
Hi this event happened on the 5th of March 2008, I was in the Quebec city ATC tower at the time, I was not The AIR TRAFFIC controller on duty at the time. It was snowing heavily with strong winds, visibility was at minimums. The Air transat flight had no passengers on board. The aircraft experience a rapid descent (I don't know the reasons, but the aircraft was climbing to be handed over to Terminal it was at 2400 feet then on the next radar sweep it was at 1300 feet and descending.
Is it me, or when the pilot says "pan pan pan" for the first time, it sounds like he is saying "Air Canada" instead of AirTransat, anyone else notice this?
Must have been unnerving, but not very pro. Air Transat are a mixed bag - a fairly chequered reputation, but cheap, and the only easy way to fly on the A310, an endangered species for the airline enthusiast.
I fly TS a lot and I am not thrilled to hear this. Undoubtedly they were in peril but I would expect a more professional response. It sounds like something out of a horror movie - and I have been on planes in more danger than this crew were, and it was handled by my crews very differently.
On a related note, what has happened to Canada lately? Tasering some dude to death at YVR, banning George Galloway MP and Air Transat pilots completely losing their shit in some windshear. Come on guys!
only done it on flight simulator X, but i flew and landed a 737-800 for 10 mins with full rudder failure. just have to be very careful with your banking especially on final approach. Still impressive achievement in reality considering the added psychological factors in terms of their initial panic.

This is what I hate about Quebec in Canada, they think they are so special and that they can use fucking French in their ATC. God, I wish they fucking separate.
Canada is a bilingual country. Our money is written in English and French. Also, the products you buy, like breakfast cereal, are in English and French, so what's the problem? They were flying within Quebec, so they spoke French. I'm sure if they were flying to Toronto or Vancouver they would speak English.
FYI:Here's the deal. ALL ATC in the world speaks English. This is to standardized communication. The only MAJOR exception is Israel. There they speak Hebrew until someone comes on in English, then EVERYONE goes to it. The reason for this is that all pilots and controllers know what everyone else says. Why Canada thinks they are special I'm not sure, but hey maybe if someone comes across in English they would then go to English. All in all America started ATC that's why it's English.
Yes, I know all ATC in the world speaks English, BUT, if it's a local flight with local pilots they would speak the language of the country. For example, a Japan Airlines flight from one city in Japan to another city in Japan, like Tokyo to Osaka, the pilots and ATC would speak Japanese to each other. If it was a JAL flight from Tokyo to New York, then of course they would speak English.
@starwarsrebel2006 Yes it's true. There were even a big battle in the 70 for the pilots in Quebec to be alowed to speak french with the controlers.....
@starwarsrebel2006 In Canada, the local language is English, dickhead ...... Quebec needs to learn to speak English ! In France controllers speak English .... In Japan, guess what, controllers speak Englsh.... Evrywhere in the fuckng world controllers speak English, except Russia (Ex. communist, biggest country in the weorld, understandable) and Quebec (proud idiots of who knows what)
@av7447 Lol. You're hilarious. I got the highest rated comment with 10 thumbs up because it was an intelligent comment. You, on the other hand call me dickhead and use profanities so guess where you stand? You obviously know nothing about Quebec. They've been speaking French for over 200 years. Guess what? Controllers speak their own language unless it's an international flight. Oh, and Russia isn't communist anymore or the biggest country in the world anymore, lol.
You got the highest rated comment because 90% of the people on youtube are as retarded as yourself, duh !!! Ofcourse I know nothing about Quebec, its not like I live in Canada or something... And its not like french wannabes in Quebec wants to be a separate country,, no noone knows about that.... not to mention that people in France hate people of Quebec because they fucked up their native language.. Also Russia is a biggest country in the world, google it, dumb fuck.
@starwarsrebel2006 the way i understand it, thats not true...the polish crash that recently killed their president was flying to russia and they were required to speak english but didnt and it contributed to the crash. there is another crash here on youtube it was turkish and they spoke english too, no american destination needed. english is required, dont matter where your from or going. at least thats what ive learned...i could be wrong, dont hammer me if i am lol
It' s a problem with a lot of people not able to speak anything but english. For example, I' m a fucking frenchman, and I speak english, spanish, italian, dutch and creole, and a little swedish. What about you ?
Only professionnal know that french and russian are international languages used in radiotransmissions as well as english. In ICAO, spanish is added, but only for writing. French language is used as international language for law writing thank to much precise words.
As a professionnal and airline pilot for 30 years, I can assume french is one of the three official international languages used in voice air communications.
Panicking voice or not he kept the nose down applied high throttle (can hear them) to regain airspeed & control to save the day, (not a pilot but i understand the controls etc) despite the 'sinking lift' feeling well done i reckon, he wants to see his kids again like rest of us.

well pilots are supposed to be trained to deal with event of windshear, plus, an a310 is equipped with a weather radar capable of showing zones of turbulance and possible zones of windshear, the fact that the pilot was surprised and caught by that plus the amountof panic he exhibited really show how unexperience or incompetant he was. Finally ill add that english is indeed the ICAO recognized language but since both the ATC and pilot spoke french they are allowed to do so...
please say nothing about pilots incompetence. you are notbody to judge. you are not even a real pilot. you can never imagine what a pilot experiences when the plane starts loosing airpseed and alititude all together during takeoff/intial climbout. I am telling you from my first hand epxierience, it's nothing to stay calm about.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
How do u know if i am or not a pilot or an ATC, lets pretend I was not, even if i were a simple passenger, I would have the right to criticize the lack of professionalism exhibited here. To feel fear is to be human but to deal with it and stay calm is to be professional, even single engine pilots know that...Plus, as I said before, Airline Pilots are trained to deal with this situation, damm the guy was so stressed he wasnt even able to input the frequency to contact montreal center on 132.35...
I would not exclude the chance that you are an ATC, but Pilot? I don't know... unless you say that you are a pilot I will assume that you are not. Just tell me one thing... do you know how it feels when the plane sinks from beneath your ass and keeps sinking and sinking and sinking and you are close to the ground? At that second all that matters is to fix the situation, and you really cannot control how panicked your voice sounds when you give command to others.
I also can see why and how he could not dial the the frequency. It requires some precise finger movements and when you are stressed out it's not really easy to do. I would understand criticizing the pilot if he did something wrong or was ignoring some warnings, etc...
but when a pilot faces a phenomenon, that he doesn't have control over, you cannot blame them for panicking. One starts to panic when there are no actions left.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I am not pilot nor involved in the airline profession, but the last thing I want my pilot to do if he is flying me is to panic. Panicking has no place in the cockpit. Tell me, how can it possibly help? By overracting and breaking off the rear stabilizer due to sudden jerks on the controls due to panicking? If you panic you should not be a passenger airline pilot, period!
Pilots are humans too. Passengers trust the professional pilot in the cockpit. The professional pilot knows that it's only him/her and if a situation arises from which there is no escape, so they can panic too. I am pilot and I know how it feels when something goes wrong it the cockpit. We get the same butterflies in our stomachs as any human being. Pilot's are trained for most emergencies, and they keep their cool and try to recover. When it seems there is no escape - panic starts setting in
i was thinking of that Air Transat Flight 236, where the Pilots (Captain) remained cool and confident even after they lost all their fuel! They still managed to guide the Plane and eventually even land it.
@babystinky This is exactly why I told you that you gotta be a pilot to understand it. Trust me running out of fuel when at high altitude is not as scary as sinking after takeoff with no ability to recover.
@babystinky that's right, just after they'd cooly and confidently chucked all their remaining fuel into the atlantic by pressing the wrong button. Good save though.
If you are taking off with full throttles and the airplane starts loosing altitude, there is not much you can do, rather than to make sure that you have correct flap setting, and full throttle set and air brakes are not deployed. at that point when you also see that your airspeed is low, there is really not much to do but to lower the nose and panic/wait/hope/pray that the airspeed will come back before you reach the ground.
A low airspeed display might also be symptomatic in rarer cases of obstructed pitot tubes or defective instruments...Thats why its imperative to stay calm and consider all options. Unfortunatly, still today, the majority of air accidents can be attributed to pilot errors...
lets put it in this way 'certain accidents could have been prevented if the pilot/s would act in different way'. We come to that conclusion after investigating the accidents for monts or years... the pilots have only seconds to decide... I will agree though there certain historical accidents have been human gross mistakes. about the airpseed. for this case, the plane sinking and low airpseed leaves no room to think that the airspeed indication is erroneously wrong.

@starwarsrebel2006 Yes it's true. There were even a big battle in the 70 for the pilots in Quebec to be alowed to speak french with the controlers.....
flush999 1 year ago
@starwarsrebel2006 In Canada, the local language is English, dickhead ...... Quebec needs to learn to speak English ! In France controllers speak English .... In Japan, guess what, controllers speak Englsh.... Evrywhere in the fuckng world controllers speak English, except Russia (Ex. communist, biggest country in the weorld, understandable) and Quebec (proud idiots of who knows what)
av7447 1 year ago
@av7447 Lol. You're hilarious. I got the highest rated comment with 10 thumbs up because it was an intelligent comment. You, on the other hand call me dickhead and use profanities so guess where you stand? You obviously know nothing about Quebec. They've been speaking French for over 200 years. Guess what? Controllers speak their own language unless it's an international flight. Oh, and Russia isn't communist anymore or the biggest country in the world anymore, lol.

@starwarsrebel2006

I confirm.
Only professionnal know that french and russian are international languages used in radiotransmissions as well as english. In ICAO, spanish is added, but only for writing. French language is used as international language for law writing thank to much precise words.
Speedymartin 3 years ago 3
Non mais c'est qoui tu cherche à dire speedy???
plugs313 3 years ago
Speedymartin 3 years ago 4
only if you are invited in french!!!
russia is a rule to itself
spanish dont care
professionals, even pakistan speaks english in ATC, if you refuse another language other than english thats at the discretion of pilots,
english is teh language to be used
bucky1968 3 years ago

66alex6699 3 years ago
please say nothing about pilots incompetence. you are notbody to judge. you are not even a real pilot. you can never imagine what a pilot experiences when the plane starts loosing airpseed and alititude all together during takeoff/intial climbout. I am telling you from my first hand epxierience, it's nothing to stay calm about.

66alex6699 3 years ago
I would not exclude the chance that you are an ATC, but Pilot? I don't know... unless you say that you are a pilot I will assume that you are not. Just tell me one thing... do you know how it feels when the plane sinks from beneath your ass and keeps sinking and sinking and sinking and you are close to the ground? At that second all that matters is to fix the situation, and you really cannot control how panicked your voice sounds when you give command to others.
armanys2003 3 years ago
I also can see why and how he could not dial the the frequency. It requires some precise finger movements and when you are stressed out it's not really easy to do. I would understand criticizing the pilot if he did something wrong or was ignoring some warnings, etc...
but when a pilot faces a phenomenon, that he doesn't have control over, you cannot blame them for panicking. One starts to panic when there are no actions left.

Bruinpena 2 years ago
Pilots are humans too. Passengers trust the professional pilot in the cockpit. The professional pilot knows that it's only him/her and if a situation arises from which there is no escape, so they can panic too. I am pilot and I know how it feels when something goes wrong it the cockpit. We get the same butterflies in our stomachs as any human being. Pilot's are trained for most emergencies, and they keep their cool and try to recover. When it seems there is no escape - panic starts setting in

@armanys2003
very true. however, there are those amongst us who remain cool even in the face of death. just their personality type.

@armanys2003
i was thinking of that Air Transat Flight 236, where the Pilots (Captain) remained cool and confident even after they lost all their fuel! They still managed to guide the Plane and eventually even land it.
babystinky 9 months ago
@babystinky This is exactly why I told you that you gotta be a pilot to understand it. Trust me running out of fuel when at high altitude is not as scary as sinking after takeoff with no ability to recover.
armanys2003 9 months ago 2
@babystinky that's right, just after they'd cooly and confidently chucked all their remaining fuel into the atlantic by pressing the wrong button. Good save though.
arenalife 4 months ago
If you are taking off with full throttles and the airplane starts loosing altitude, there is not much you can do, rather than to make sure that you have correct flap setting, and full throttle set and air brakes are not deployed. at that point when you also see that your airspeed is low, there is really not much to do but to lower the nose and panic/wait/hope/pray that the airspeed will come back before you reach the ground.
armanys2003 3 years ago
A low airspeed display might also be symptomatic in rarer cases of obstructed pitot tubes or defective instruments...Thats why its imperative to stay calm and consider all options. Unfortunatly, still today, the majority of air accidents can be attributed to pilot errors...
66alex6699 3 years ago
lets put it in this way 'certain accidents could have been prevented if the pilot/s would act in different way'. We come to that conclusion after investigating the accidents for monts or years... the pilots have only seconds to decide... I will agree though there certain historical accidents have been human gross mistakes. about the airpseed. for this case, the plane sinking and low airpseed leaves no room to think that the airspeed indication is erroneously wrong.
armanys2003 3 years ago
i agree with vyou, i am a pilot to. But i only flew gliding planes...
