I didn't know he was dead untill I saw this video. I knew he had cancer but I just didn't watch news during December and by the new year the news had passed, very sad.
Christopher Hitchens was actually the extremist of the atheist group while Dawkins was more moderate to me. i am a pagan but i do feel i am comfortable with atheist, agonistics and free thinkers than with christians and muslims.. The christians and muslims do think that you are going to hell for not following their faith
I think Hitchens' 'power' if you want to put it that way was his ability to see into the depths of the human consciousness and understand what made people tick. He was much like his friend Stephen Fry in that regard; both are men with a great level of insight into the human condition. However, I think that this level of understanding, as well as enabling him to write and speak so eloquently was also what drove him towards self-destruction in despair brought about by his knowledge of humanity.
Hitchens was indeed an inspiration, but I wouldnt be so quick on Dawkins. I personally can understand his style easier because I'm more like him. To me, Hitchens would be second to him, (which is in no way an insult to Hitchens). We need people from all parts of the spectrum, aiding in intellectual liberation. Not necessarily the abolishment of religion; (although I can't see science and religion coexisting forever) but simply an age of, as Tyson would put it, scientific literacy.
having watched some of hitchen's video's I'm not really a fan. he strikes me as an arrogant asshole who thinks anyone that doesn't agree with his viewpoint is an idiot.
I thought the same at one point as well, even though I agreed with him. He went from that to becoming my favourite intellectual paragon within a fortnight or so. To this day, I can only think of two issues (that is, major issues) where I hold a significantly different viewpoint.
In other words, keep in mind the book/cover cliché. Hitchens is actually surprisingly humble.
Hitchens was indeed a great man, and I also have great respect for his lifestyle :P
However, I would like to point out the difference with Dawkins, the latter was not a writer or a communicator, he was a scientist who wrote a biology book and all of sudden found himself in the middle of religious nuts and was like "WTF is this shit?"
Hitchens = making witty jokes about how stupid you are while smoking 5 cigs per minute
Dawkins = "you people are crazy and dangerous and should leave science be"
You may have interesting things to say but the use of vulgar language turns off many people and encourages the rude ones to make stupid comments.i'm afraid I coulden't listen all the way through one of your videos due to the profanity.your not doing yourself any favors by being profane.
why should someone say "i't a great loss...." ? better say "thanks for having been there..." or in his words... "I'm dieing - and so are you." or "72 virgins means 72 mothers in law... u want that?" yes this - and nothing else was christopher hitchens.
That was a great tribute. When people talk about how angry he was, they forget how inspiring he was. His targets did far more damage to the world than he ever did, and he helped many of us to be at peace with ideas that maybe we were uncomfortable about before. I hope that enough people told him that during his lifetime and I think that if he had seen this video it would have made him very happy.
Luckily he left behind a massive body of work. Strange thng is, having read him years ago during school before youtube even existed, the voice I read at the time didn't seem like the same man I saw on the vids or listenned to in the podcasts. @smallpotatoes989 Neither what you think or feel are inherently more real if neither are grounded in reality. Even your own perceptions and emotions are suspect. Believing in something because it assuages your sense of wellbeing or because it has a catchy name like "quantum mysticism" or "mystic hart" [sic] after some subliterate told you to look it up is NOT evidence. It is simply a new form of religion, believing in something based on personal revelation or authority.
@karry299 - How exactly was a misogynist scumbag? Funny, because I've read a few of his books, and followed a lot of these debates on YouTube -I've heard him say more than once that the empowerment of women was a cure for poverty, and that religion is clearly man-made because IT is misogynist and thinks of women as property.
Search YouTube for cure for poverty and you'll see.
Dawkins is meeker in voice and tone, yet looks at his opponent like he is an idiot if he dos not undertand him. Hitchens was more abrasive and confrontational, yet was more understanding of his opponents position. Dawkins is well versed in science but could not argue religion well, while Christopher was the opposite. Both held the same position of rejecting theistic claims, they just argue it diferently based on their individual knowledge.
I have an immense amount of respect for Christopher Hitchens. Indeed, he is one of my favourite writers. It saddened me greatly to see him gone, never to blow the minds of millions with his sharp wit ever again. Yet he does live on, in his works, in his message, in his legacy. Thank you Mr. Hitchens, we'll take it from here.
@cropdusterfull Firs and foremost Hitchens was a journalist. As a journalist you educate the public about political matters. But he was more than that, he was a commentator who made you think. One of these things he made you think about was religion and its totalitarian claims. He contributed to the enlightenment of the public, so yes, he was an educator.
Ive already seen a handful of videos featuring people that claim Hitchens death was the product of him being blasphemous, its so annoying to watch, not to mention extremely disrespectful, however its further proof of how twisted some religious people can be.
@cropdusterfull He believed in sharing information and not being afraid of it. People who share information, who are willing to show others facts and help people think outside their box, in my opinion are educators. Though, it's to be said that you have to be an educated person to be an educator.
@cropdusterfull well, she didn't say he was a first grade teacher - so reading is right out. Language? Yes. No one who read Hitchens' work walked away without learning something about language. Social studies? Certainly that too.
I loved it at the end of Return of the Jedi, when Luke Skywalker removed Darth Vader's mask and it turned out that Darth Vader was Christopher Hitchens. That was really cool!!
Great thinker, but sometimes repellent. I hated him when he was debating Galloway and hated him for changing his unbiased secular stance for pro-fundamentalist western, probably for selling his books to a wider audience. Very polarizing figure, and not much of a "fighter" imo.
typical brit - arrogant and thought he was smarter than everyone else. religion is more than belief in God it is a philosophy and social laws on how to live your life. religous people who follow their religion are so content and happy and such good people i think of mennonites, jesuits, mormons, therevada and zen buddhist as prime examples of good people i have known. i may not believe in their religion but i respect the way they live their lives. hitchens could never do that
@rostant999 I don't care if others are religious because I try my hardest to ignore it. At the end of the day, I think people are pretty insane to believe in gods. End of story. Hitchens went around telling the world Santa and god wasn't real. I see that as a good thing.
@rostant999 um. Philosophy and social laws . . . by way of magical powers you mean. So, you don't believe in their stories of having access to a magical friend but respect they think they do.
Cool story. I similarly have no respect for people who go around telling me they have influence over magical beings who from time to time will cast friendly spells to help them out.
@spenderofthrones I've always thought his opinions on Mother Teresa were uncalled for, but Falwell and Gibson deserved what they got. At the end of the day, I didn't have to agree with everything Hitchens said to think him intelligent.
Hitchens was great when he was doing his speeches. However, in a debate, he was obnoxious and rude, interrupting people to left and right, which kind of annoyed me. Anyhow, on another topic, this video made the Disney video disappear from my front page. Yay Youtube, you win again...
Peacock blue is rather fitting. You allways wear kind of overly, proud of your look,s as a grown Man watching you? I seams less crule, and more wise and fair. You got your paint crooked, is why I brought it up, then alsow alowed the light on the side of your face missing it, the light showed the differance. And your still at it "all look at sexy me" wich was why you are not sexy, if it isn't natural?it's just an act. acting is fake, fake is cheap, cheap lacks taist. Not talking about money.
I just want to say thank you for making this video, more people need to know about him, and by proxy what knowledge he contributed.
I prefer Dawkins over hitchens, mostly for his credentials...but I think username: zleverton explained it best
I'll be honest, although i agreed with hitchens when I first heard him, i was strongly put off by how assertive and merciless he was... it made me feel like he was being ignorant of others, but at the same time I agreed with him....in time i came around
@DataSe7en I don't mind his rough edges. I actually like him because of them. Mostly, cause he reminds me of me :) And it was my pleasure making this video. Thanks for watching.
Hitchens sometimes said some incredibly smart things, and he was without a doubt a skilled and powerful orator and debator, however he could also be intensely repellant and obnoxiously provocative for no other reason than to have people pay attention to him. i think to look back on his past and see it as anything other than checkered is just as removed from reality as believing he went to hell to be poked in the ass by a big goat man in red pjs.
@zleverton To suggest that Mr. Hitchens manner of conveying his points was solely for the purpose of getting attention is laughable at best. I only wish that there were more people in this world who shared Mr. Hitchens passion for truth even in the face of being labeled as provocative or offensive.
If you can't handle biting wit, chances are you can't handle wit in the first place.
@zleverton "he could also be intensely repellant and obnoxiously provocative for no other reason than to have people pay attention to him."
You suggested that when he was being obnoxious (in your view) it was generally for no other reason than for attention. Please point out a single time when any of his comments could be interpreted as self serving a need for attention, you've got plenty of material to work with on just YouTube.
i like Dawkins better for a few reasons, mainly that Dawkins is a biologist, which makes him infinitely more qualified than Hitchens to talk about science. also Dawkins has become a far less venomous proprietor of atheism as of late, choosing not to argue with the religious so much as simplyshow how and why reality is truer, more beautiful, and more powerful than old desert myths.
@zleverton The problem with Dawkins is his writing style. Its very dry, very British, and very professorial. Hitches was a much better writer. I agree with what she is saying.
Thank you for your sentiments. I agree whole heartedly. Wonderful man, intellect, and a fantastic voice as well as a great teacher. Love you! *kisses*
I love Hitchens! The only thing I disagreed with him was his article in vanity fair that talked about how all women aren't funny. Very interesting read though.
I'm a deeply religious person myself, so I couldn't disagree more with his views on religion. Still, I'm sad that he's gone. The world has lost a very intelligent, thoughtful man who was clearly capable of thinking for himself.
Lovely. Thank you.

Hitchens was great when he was doing his speeches. However, in a debate, he was obnoxious and rude, interrupting people to left and right, which kind of annoyed me. Anyhow, on another topic, this video made the Disney video disappear from my front page. Yay Youtube, you win again...

Now that's a Typical atheist reply, never accept an Atheists faults and bad deeds.
But if a Religious person does something like that you Atheist guys go ahead and Bomb that persons ass off with bull shit "intellectual" propaganda.

I do not think I have ever heard Hitchens talked like that when addressing people. hmmmmm.
God? Kind of depends upon the definition of God. hmmmmm.

Hitchens sometimes said some incredibly smart things, and he was without a doubt a skilled and powerful orator and debator, however he could also be intensely repellant and obnoxiously provocative for no other reason than to have people pay attention to him. i think to look back on his past and see it as anything other than checkered is just as removed from reality as believing he went to hell to be poked in the ass by a big goat man in red pjs.
zleverton 2 months ago 13
@zleverton To suggest that Mr. Hitchens manner of conveying his points was solely for the purpose of getting attention is laughable at best. I only wish that there were more people in this world who shared Mr. Hitchens passion for truth even in the face of being labeled as provocative or offensive.
If you can't handle biting wit, chances are you can't handle wit in the first place.

@DueCarnage at what point did i say that Hitchens only ever wanted attention? Try again.

Try again!

i like Dawkins better for a few reasons, mainly that Dawkins is a biologist, which makes him infinitely more qualified than Hitchens to talk about science. also Dawkins has become a far less venomous proprietor of atheism as of late, choosing not to argue with the religious so much as simplyshow how and why reality is truer, more beautiful, and more powerful than old desert myths.
zleverton 2 months ago
@zleverton The problem with Dawkins is his writing style. Its very dry, very British, and very professorial. Hitches was a much better writer. I agree with what she is saying.
bamboo4tameshigiri 2 months ago
@zleverton Maybe it's just me, but I think sometimes Dawkins has a hard time trying to get his point across when speaking.

I love Hitchens! The only thing I disagreed with him was his article in vanity fair that talked about how all women aren't funny. Very interesting read though.

@CyberToons I thought that article made sense to an extent, but I took it in a totally different way than most.

I'm a deeply religious person myself, so I couldn't disagree more with his views on religion. Still, I'm sad that he's gone. The world has lost a very intelligent, thoughtful man who was clearly capable of thinking for himself.
