  • metal machine :)

  • Was curious what you did to copy your VHS tapes to Youtube,, did you convert them to DVD"s first??

  • No. I recorded the video to Windows Media Center. Then I edited the recording in Windows Movie Maker or DVgate Plus or Adobe Premiere Standard. Whichever seemed to work best for me at the time.

  • Nice! Its cool to see old footage.

  • Not a single AM-can in sight - a nice looking consist!

  • Yep. The good old days. BTW You have some nice videos on your site.

  • I miss the old Southern Passenger cars that used to be on the Amtrak Crecent, even after Amtrak phased out the old F 40 locomotives with the new GE locomotives, they were still running the old Southern Passenger cars until the Crescent started using the Amfleet coaches they added and coupled behind the dining car, but still, I DO miss the old Southern Passenger cars though.

  • This would have been the #19 Crescent, arrives in Atlanta at 8:30ish AM...

  • A lot of ex Santa-Fe cars in this consist.

  • Those were 'Southern Railway' cars from the Southern Crescent. They look almost the same as the 'Santa Fe' cars...

  • Okay, let's clear this up.

The first car is ex SAL, the next two are ex ATSF, the fourth and fifth are ex-SP, and the final car is ex NYC. One can tell this information from window types, arrangements, fluting patterns, and a basic knowledge of Amtrak's Heritage fleet. Anyone who wants extensive details should get a copy of Passenger Train Annual 1988, which showcased Amtrak's entire roster. Very few SOU cars made it to Amtrak.

  • Was it because the SOU cars were made by Pullman Standard had steel frames which were viewed as less than ideal? Or was it because Amtrak had enough Budd built heritage cars to operate the service.

  • @gregrudd Most of the cars SOU operated on the Crescent were made by Pullman Standard. They had a few Budd cars, coaches, lounges, and diners, but the only ones that made it to Amtrak were the diners. By 1979 when SOU handed operations over to Amtrak, the Heritage Fleet program had already begun and they had enough cars to cover their needs. The Pullman cars that SOU had were of the variety that were notorious for water and later rust buildup between the fluting and the side sill of the car.

  • That IS the Amtrak I remember from the 80's! But they usually had some E units or 2 F-40's.

    I Love It! 5*
