I do not ride and so obviously, don't know everything there is to know about horses but, I love horses and I cannot believe somebody could actually do this! When I'd watch dressage, I thought that they did that to make the horse look graceful. I never thought that it was actually hurting poor horses! I don't understand why anybody who does this bothers to ride. If she dosen't care that she is hurting her horses, she shouldn't be riding.

You can't call Anky and 'appaulling rider' . Like it or not she is an amazing rider. You may not like her style and her techniques but look at her, she is making the horse do exactly what she wants and is making it look effortless. I also hate when people say this iss cruel to the horse and the damage it is doing to them. These horse are treated like royalty! I bet you wouldn't bat an eye lid to a riding school pony who is getting kicked and pulled by someone who is a real 'appauling rider'.

@ldmtzk Just because someone is fantastic and well known doesn't mean their ethics are correct. How would you feel if you had to walk around and run with your chin tucked into your chest? How would you feel if someone made you run while you can't even see in front of you? When horses are behind the vertical with their bit, it means they are doing that to avoid pain, Rolkur is painful to them and not nice. There body is under physical stress and develop bone abnormalities from this.

Okay, because Anky definitely isn't one of the best riders in the world. Stop hating and get your facts straight. When used correctly rollkur is an effective training tool. Many dressage horses are so well trained that they automatically go on the bit like that.

No horse should be that far behind the vertical, no horse would do that naturally or automatically. They are forced into that position and do that to avoid pain from the rider's hands. Forceful methods is what is turning me away from my current riding instructor and her daughter who is also supposed to be a "good" riding instructor and horse trainer. She tore my horse up trying to force him to do high level movements he did not understand and she is constantly jerking on and sawing on her horses' mouth. And she signed up to go train with Anky. I guess birds of a feather flock together.
ROLLKUR is not the same as LDR ! I am not saying some riders on this videos aren't using rollkur instead of LDR, but they are two different things. Not all of the footage on here is rollkur, and not all of it is harmful for the horse. Some of it; yes. It's people who do not know the difference between LDR and Rollkur that harm their horses while trying to ride LDR, while in fact they're in rollkur. People should not criticize what they do not know.
source of this idea- is the bad riders that are all well known..lots of people know that anky van grusen uses rollkur. and beginners may think that is what dressage is cause thats all theyve heard of. Lots of people DONT know that Blue Hors Matine was the greatest dressage horse ever!! Or who scored the highest score in the olympics last year. how is the horse in pain at any shape or form? how do you know she's mistreating her horses? do you even know her personally? do you know her at all? to me it looks like she's a FANTASTIC rider. I'd like to see you try this, you couldn't do this. Horses LIVE to perform and please their riders, I see no evidence that the horse is in pain at all. Until you provide further proof that the horse is indeed in pain and / or she mistreats her horses, I suggest you take this video down.

@dustymew Rollkur restricts breathing and blood flow to the brain. It also restricts vision and causes stiffness similar to arthritis. As stated in the video, it can also damage muscle tissue. I don't imagine the horse enjoys it much.
Yes, there are MANY riders who preform brilliantly without using rollkur or hyperflexion.

Anyone who knows Anything about horses knows that when a horse 'corkscrews' its tail, it's because something in its back is hurting/pinching. The fact that Ms. AVG can use leverage against the horse - using, essentially, the horse's own body as the fulcrum,- does not mean Mx. AVG is a 'fantastic' rider - it means she understands physics, and knows that a horse - one of the biggest domesticated mammals on the face of the earth - can be made to do things it would MUCH prefer not do.
@dustymew you do not need to know this women to know that her training method is disgracful. have a look at 'rolkur explained' video and you'll relise that she trains her horses in a way that inflicts pain to the poll, spine, neck and back. If hyperflection is used daily the bone near the poll grows and when the horse is being retrained, the bone sticks into the back of the head. Get your facts right before you choose your equestrian hero.

these horses have a good life and are just trained well i dont see what is wrong as long as her horses are happy and i think they are i have 2 horses myselve and i would (if i could ride like her) ride them also like that they are horses who have been training for a long time and are very flexible and dont have pain i think she is doeing a good job whit her horses and she loves them and they love her and she enjoys riding if she was bad for her horses she woudn't be a winner of 3 golden titles

The tension in the back and neck is exhibited in the movement. Anyone can see that the trot is suspended by tension and that the movement is not 'flowing through the back'.

I want to clear up that the FEI has not BANNED hyperflextion and rolkur completely, they have banned using it in "excessive amounts of time". If you watch an interview up on youtube with Anky, she believes that she only rides for about 2 minutes in rolkur and hyperflexion, to use different muscles. Its not twenty minutes, its two. I am against rolkur and hyperflexion, but its a horse, theyre big animals and it can throw her off if it really wants to.

I am so disappointed in the dressage world. It has dropped to the level of the "peanut rollers" in western pleasure. The idea of forcing my "pal" to do something that is damaging to his overall physical and mental well being is repugnant to me. And those that do this for the ultimate end of making money and a "reputation" do not belong in the sport.

@silani84 A truly talented rider that is able through years of training to work with a horse in a way that it WANTS to perform advanced movements do not need to use rollkur. Where a rider lacks in the ability to create that kind of partnership and harmonious relationship...he or she will turn to methods that FORCE a horse to sumbit and do as it's told. I'd rather lose in competition and know that my horses were happy than have trophies and broken horses!
The relationship between man and horse should be a harmonious one. There are many GP horses that have very extravagent front movement that is not matched behind. This is a tell tale sign that rollkur is used in training and so FEI judges should mark down on this. Unfortunately, this mismatch from front to rear is often missed due to the flashy nature of the overall look. Start marking these riders down and start penalising competition points for use of rollkur in warmup. It's just not acceptable

Ein dickes Portemonnaie reicht oft aus (oder Jemanden kennen, der das hat) und natürlich das Wissen, um diese Methode (am Besten ein Heunetz unter den Pferdebauch hängen, während der Box-Steh-Zeit. Wahrscheinlich haben sie auch noch einen Nagel auf die Zungenfreiheit geschweisst, damit s auch richtig weh tut, wenn das Pferd versucht den Kopf zu heben). .... Oh, ich bin wieder zynisch, ich merk s gerade - Sorry!

@Mearhwine im pretty sure no horse would volunterly stick his head into his chest, i never saw loose reins in the video, its just plain cruelty right there, the horses head doesnt have to be that far under the bit for it to be dressage, horses can still perform the same moves in a relaxed way. Heh... Anky and Edward Gal are training horses by rollkur.. Everybody knows this and FEI doesnt do anything about it . And guess what... Edward Gal got few days ago FEI 2010 award for best rider.. I think its not the point to "do something with Anky" but to do something with FEI couse they are completely irresponsible.. One day they are saying that training horses by hyperfelxion is forbidden and the other day they are awarding rider who do this?

How would you feel if someone made you run while you can't even see in front of you? When horses are behind the vertical with their bit, it means they are doing that to avoid pain, Rolkur is painful to them and not nice. There body is under physical stress and develop bone abnormalities from this.

@jumper649 i never said because she was well know it made rollkur ok or that her ethics are correct, my point is that there are far worse things in the riding industry that happen alot more frequently. her horses are treated amazingly at least when they are out of the arena. i think if people should be protesting it should be about horses that are neglected and abused daily, not a contraversial training method.

No horse should be that far behind the vertical, no horse would do that naturally or automatically. They are forced into that position and do that to avoid pain from the rider's hands. Forceful methods is what is turning me away from my current riding instructor and her daughter who is also supposed to be a "good" riding instructor and horse trainer. She tore my horse up trying to force him to do high level movements he did not understand and she is constantly jerking on and sawing on her horses' mouth. And she signed up to go train with Anky. I guess birds of a feather flock together.

ROLLKUR is not the same as LDR ! I am not saying some riders on this videos aren't using rollkur instead of LDR, but they are two different things. Not all of the footage on here is rollkur, and not all of it is harmful for the horse. Some of it; yes. It's people who do not know the difference between LDR and Rollkur that harm their horses while trying to ride LDR, while in fact they're in rollkur. People should not criticize what they do not know.

Lots of people DONT know that Blue Hors Matine was the greatest dressage horse ever!! Or who scored the highest score in the olympics last year. I'd like to see you try this, you couldn't do this. Horses LIVE to perform and please their riders, I see no evidence that the horse is in pain at all. @dustymew Rollkur restricts breathing and blood flow to the brain. It also restricts vision and causes stiffness similar to arthritis. As stated in the video, it can also damage muscle tissue. I don't imagine the horse enjoys it much.
Yes, there are MANY riders who preform brilliantly without using rollkur or hyperflexion.
And it doesn't matter if the creator of the video can do this. If someone knows right from wrong, I think he/she is far smarter than a misinformed "performer." Thank you.

Anyone who knows Anything about horses knows that when a horse 'corkscrews' its tail, it's because something in its back is hurting/pinching. The fact that Ms. AVG can use leverage against the horse - using, essentially, the horse's own body as the fulcrum,- does not mean Mx. AVG is a 'fantastic' rider - it means she understands physics, and knows that a horse - one of the biggest domesticated mammals on the face of the earth - can be made to do things it would MUCH prefer not do.

@dustymew you do not need to know this women to know that her training method is disgracful. have a look at 'rolkur explained' video and you'll relise that she trains her horses in a way that inflicts pain to the poll, spine, neck and back. If hyperflection is used daily the bone near the poll grows and when the horse is being retrained, the bone sticks into the back of the head. Get your facts right before you choose your equestrian hero.

these horses have a good life and are just trained well i dont see what is wrong as long as her horses are happy and i think they are i have 2 horses myselve and i would (if i could ride like her) ride them also like that they are horses who have been training for a long time and are very flexible and dont have pain i think she is doeing a good job whit her horses and she loves them and they love her and she enjoys riding if she was bad for her horses she woudn't be a winner of 3 golden titles

I want to clear up that the FEI has not BANNED hyperflextion and rolkur completely, they have banned using it in "excessive amounts of time". If you watch an interview up on youtube with Anky, she believes that she only rides for about 2 minutes in rolkur and hyperflexion, to use different muscles. Its not twenty minutes, its two. I am against rolkur and hyperflexion, but its a horse, theyre big animals and it can throw her off if it really wants to.

The sad thing is when she does her demonstrations she is probably speaking to over 100 non-professional or amature riders, in which she specifically states that only (and I quote) "riders in top sport" should use this method. Really? Like she doesnt believe that those amature riders or possibly even beginner riders are going to go home and try this method on thier horses? Come on, get real. Die Pferde haben einfach aufgegeben, sich ergeben...sie können sich nicht mehr wehren, weil sie gebrochen sind. Und diese widerlichen Reiter trauen sich auch noch in aller Öffentlichkeit SO zu reiten. Warum wird immer noch still zugeguckt? Solche Menschen gehören aus dem Reitsport ausgeschlossen.

Where a rider lacks in the ability to create that kind of partnership and harmonious relationship...he or she will turn to methods that FORCE a horse to sumbit and do as it's told. I'd rather lose in competition and know that my horses were happy than have trophies and broken horses!

The relationship between man and horse should be a harmonious one. There are many GP horses that have very extravagent front movement that is not matched behind. This is a tell tale sign that rollkur is used in training and so FEI judges should mark down on this. Unfortunately, this mismatch from front to rear is often missed due to the flashy nature of the overall look. Start marking these riders down and start penalising competition points for use of rollkur in warmup. It's just not acceptable

I really dont see the point in using rollkur...Maybe its just me, but this doesnt look normal, seem wise, or actually does any good for the horse in training and such...

Ich hasse diese Frau und ich hasse sie noch mehr für das, was sie mit ihren Pferden tut. Aber im Tulpenpflücken wäre sie bestimmt ganz toll. Aber reiten kann die definitiv nicht.

@corsas9 Ne, heutzutage muss man nicht reiten können, um erfolgreich zu sein. Ein dickes Portemonnaie reicht oft aus (oder Jemanden kennen, der das hat) und natürlich das Wissen, um diese Methode (am Besten ein Heunetz unter den Pferdebauch hängen, während der Box-Steh-Zeit. Wahrscheinlich haben sie auch noch einen Nagel auf die Zungenfreiheit geschweisst, damit s auch richtig weh tut, wenn das Pferd versucht den Kopf zu heben). .... Oh, ich bin wieder zynisch, ich merk s gerade - Sorry!

Ein Fehler bleibt ein Fehler, auch wenn ihn viele begehen und diesen mit allerlei neumodischen Umschreibungen umhüllten. Auch das arrogante Geschwafel, "Hyperfelxion" könne nur richtig von einem "Profi" angewendet werden ist lächerlich!!!

Just for the record- what if I don't want to compete? Doesn't make me any lesser person, for all you know, I can ride piaffe, passage ( I've ridden these before), etc- but my aspiration is not to compete....

I dont see how the horse moves forward in this position, its soo unatural. wouldnt the concept be to extend the neck into a long natural graceful line rather than...that?! Its painful to watch

@Mearhwine im pretty sure no horse would volunterly stick his head into his chest, i never saw loose reins in the video, its just plain cruelty right there, the horses head doesnt have to be that far under the bit for it to be dressage, horses can still perform the same moves in a relaxed way. There is just no need for it and I hope rollkur and hyperflexion get banned

Heh... Anky and Edward Gal are training horses by rollkur.. Everybody knows this and FEI doesnt do anything about it . And guess what... Edward Gal got few days ago FEI 2010 award for best rider.. I think its not the point to "do something with Anky" but to do something with FEI couse they are completely irresponsible.. One day they are saying that training horses by hyperfelxion is forbidden and the other day they are awarding rider who do this?

@lassiesuca and maybe you shouldn't insult people who actually made the effort to translate what they were trying to say. Anky only gets the publicity for it because she IS a prominent rider. Under no circumstances does that make her a horrible person. None of you have the right to judge someone on their training methods until you have sat the horse that is being ridden. If you watch videos, Salinero does it himself, in alot of videos THE REINS ARE LOOSE!!!
