On my Lancaster that air box is empty with the actual air filter on the inner wing. There's a rectangular seal between the air box lid and base, and it's very important to replace this the way in came out. But essentially you never need to touch the air box. Obviously you could fit a second air filter, but ...
Question though; when I was latching the air filter containment back together, one of the latches broke off, on the side with the air intake. It still holds together pretty tightly with the remaining 2 latches + the bolt though. Do you think only having 2 latches will cause any problems in the future?
This is excellent thanks for posting, but how do you get the little tabs in the bottom of the filter housing inside of their slots??? I noticed you just dropped the housing back in place w/o aligning the slots in the bottom. Are you sure they are in place? If not, it could allow in a lot of unfiltered air.
@OLB3AP Yeah, they are in place. For me they line up pretty easy and I don't think there was much room to miss, so no real effort. Good tip for everyone to pay attention to.
Is the new one a K&N filter. If so they are rechargeable. Recharge for use for 1,000,000 miles. A regular filter should be replaced every 12,000 miles.
cheers! Works for a 2002 Bugeye 2.0l Impreza GX too :)

This is the same as my 2003 Subaru Forester. I am thinking about replacing mine with a K&N reusable air filter.

Really useful. All the Subarus I've owned (about nine to date) have just used that filter positioned close to the inner wing.

@Jackthesmilingblack Wow, nine Subarus. I'm on number two since 1988 or so. An '85 and now '03. Getting good years out of each.

@vio919 Check it once in a while to be sure it stays tight. May want to figure some alternative to replace it.

Thanks for this tutorial, I have a 2002 Subaru Impreza that has a similar air intake build and this video is very helpful. Thank you.

Great, glad it helped. You should record the change for your Impreza and post in case there are any differences. Thanks for the comment.

Hi how did it sound before and after fitting the K&N over the standard paper trash filtre? thanks for the vid.

I didn't put on a K&N. Perhaps RevMarket will visit again and reply.

I'm missing the bolt that you unscrewed. Do you think it's important I find a new one fore it?

I think you should replace it to keep the casing stabilized.

RevMarket 3 years ago
I don't believe it is a K&N. That is so cool, in my mind air filters get trashed after use. Rechargeable is awesome, nice and sustainable.
Thanks!
