  • im using gimp on linux and the layers panel isn't on the screen. anyone now whats wrong?

  • @Johnwoosdong The layer panel (or the dock it's grouped in,) often disappears when starting up GIMP. Try hitting Ctrl+L

  • I learned more from 2 minutes of your video than from reading the user manual for an hour. Thanks!

  • Happy late bd

  • @MrStricklyBusiness Thanks!

  • Happy Birthday Bailey

  • @Seer11665 Thank you! I just turned 21 three days ago. :)

  • Nice job, Benjamin. You are a good teacher. Not everybody is!

  • @BookOfFlaws Thank you very much! I appreciate it. ;)

  • Hi I'm working with GIMP on a mac and its not allowing me to just "drag" layers onto the software. Is there another way to put in layers?

  • @KatCraats Yes, there is: Ctrl+Alt+O (a Windows hotkey, admittedly,) or under File>Open as Layers. This will open a dialog box where you can navigate to the proper directory and load in an image or a GIMP .xcf file as a new layer. Hope this helps!

  • I exited the Layer long bar thingy like the other one on the other side and I dont know how to open it up again....

  • @drakozero8 Try hitting Ctrl+L.

  • Thank You for this wonderful tutorial.I had been breaking my head trying to understand Layers and your video resolved it ! A very belated Birthday wished BTW ! :-) I am gonna search for more of your videos now.

  • @lindaenian You're very welcome! I'm glad my tutorial helped. Thank you! My next birthday is almost here. Well, I'd better make some new videos then, shouldn't I? ;)

  • ok

so i drew a picture and i tried to colour it on a different layer but the paint wouldn't show up wouldn't show up

  • @DaMadNinja Was the layer you were painting on above the layer you were trying to color over? Whatever layer is on the top of the stack that is set to Normal will occlude any layers beneath it.

  • Thanks so much for this tutorial! I have been looking for a GOOD layers video that is simple, straight forward and easy to follow. Your is all that..WOOP!

  • @hairartist63 Hey, thanks! You're very welcome. Do you have any other tutorials you are looking for? Perhaps I could create a tutorial to help answer any other questions you have.

  • Thank You so much for all your wonderful lessons!! You Rock!!

  • @Krowe2020 You're welcome! And thanks for the kind words. I really need to get back into creating tutorials.

  • @benjamindbailey ~ yes!! please do make more tutorials!! you've got a great voice, you're easy to follow and i like your upbeat but not overly dramatic tone : )

currently i really want/need to learn to take an image and make the background transparent so i can copy or cut & paste on to a different color. my problem is the most of the image is white like the background. so, select by color isn't working for me. Any ideas? TY!! I appreciate your time.

  • THANKS FOR the tutorial!! and happy belated birthday :))

  • Happy Birthday! Thanks for the tutorial.

  • LOL XD :) CTRL-L

  • Happy birthday! Thanks very much for the video!

  • CTRL-L for Layer Box thing :) incase some1 is wondering :)

    Thumbs Up.

  • @1Fable2Boy Hey, thanks for the tip! I prefer the full dock with tabs, but the hotkey works, too. :)

  • @1Fable2Boy

    OMFG YOUR MY HERO

  • @Tennishead39 It should be under Windows>Recently Closed Docks, in a group along with a couple other windows.

  • Thank you for your help!!

  • Please Reply,

Sence the first day that I got this I acidently X'ed out of the layer box, couldn't get it back so I reinstaled the program and it wasn't there? Is there a way for me to get it back on screen?

  • @MultiKinglime Definitely. :) All you need to do is go the top row of dropdown menus on your main window, and choose Windows>Recently Closed Docks>Channels, Paths, Undo Layers - Patterns, Gradients, Brushes - it should make the Layer panel and all it's tabbed goodness reappear. :)

  • @benjamindbailey I have the same problem; I have tried to do what you wrote here, but I can't find it. All I find in Recently Closed Docks are my old pictures..

  • @MultiKinglime You can get the layer panel back under the header menu Windows>Recently Closed Docks>Layers, Channels, Paths, Undo. If it's not in that grouped dock, you can find it under the next menu, Windows>Dockable Dialogs>Layers, or, as 1Fable2Boy said, with the hotkey Ctrl+L.

  • Happy late BIRTHDAY!! :)) thanQ soo much by the way

  • happy very very late birthday........... thank you for your video

  • I was wondering if you could help me out? I've always made fliers using Photo Shop or Paint Shop Pro.I'm switching to GIMP. My question is, say I'm making a flier and I have your tree image and I add another layer of a person who has a background. How do I cut out the background on the layer with the person and still see the tree layer in the back w/o leave a white space of everything i just cut out? In PS/PSP when the background's cut out, you still see the below layer. Does that make sense?

  • @GamepitDAngelo Yes, it makes sense. You're going to want to use a layer "mask," so you can isolate your character from his white background, by painting him out via the mask and placing his layer overtop of the tree layer. If you would like me to demonstrate, I can make a tutorial on it.

  • @benjamindbailey Please!!!!!

  • @GamepitDAngelo I'll see what I can do. :)

  • ok I am still a bit confused, what I'm tryign to do it change the color of hair in one of my image's but the problem is my hand is in the way so when I go to change it it of cours is changing the color of my hand. How do I use these layers to change the color but layer my hand so I can add is as the original on the new image? I jsut feel it would be more work to separetly change the color of my hair in 2 sections. Does any of that I tyeped make sense?

  • @2metal2rock Very good question! You have two options: 1, try to isolate the color in the hair by using curves and hitting Ctrl+LMB on top of the color in the hair you want to edit, and adjusting the the curves for that part, then checking and seeing if the same lights/darks are being affected in the hand. If they are, go to the better system of using layer masks, and adjusting the colors of one section at a time. I can create a tutorial on using layers masks, if you would like. :)

  • @benjamindbailey I get it now but you don't have to make a video, it would be helpful to see it in action though. =-)

  • happy birthday a little late hey do you know how to take one image then take another and then take the second image put it underneath and then make it appear as if behind the pic i show you a video maybe youll know what i mean

  • @hackeredemon Hey, no worries. A late wish is better than no wish. :) I believe what you're talking about is layers and, depending on the image you are using for the top layer, masks. I could do a tutorial on masks if you would like. :D

  • GREAT THANK U..HAPPY BIRTHDAY 2 MONTHZ LATER...JUS STUMBLED UPON UR VIDEO...STAY BEING A BLESSIN..QUES

  • @X11Entertainment Hey, mate, thanks!
