The other story was that his uncle used to expose his self to Dons girlfriend while urinating and say his penis looked like a big purple beef heart.

There are two stories I know to this. One, he took his name from a script that was being worked up for a low budget movie that was never produced called Captain Beefheart vs. The Grunt People. The other story comes from The Real Frank Zappa book that he used to pee with the bathroom door open and when his girlfriend would walk by she would comment on how his whizzer looked like a beefheart! That's probably as close to the truth as anyone will come.
