  • 3:04 Wrong place wrong time

  • The stuff is on the opening credits is off the same LP as the Late Last Night song; Mental Notes. The whole album songs morph into the next song like DFarkside of the Moon or Supertramp's Crime of the Century.

Every "song" on Mental Notes is brilliantly bizarre and a safari--sometimes you end up in such a different place you forget how the song started......

  • WHat is the music during the opening credits??? THanks

  • 'Late Last Night' did not appear on Mental Notes , it only appeared on Second Thoughts.Mental Notes was released prior to the song being written.

    cheers Mr Jezno

  • Seriously, the song in the intro is amazing. Please divulge the wisdom to us if you know what the song is. It would be much appreciated.

  • @foxxyloxx The song's called 'Walking Down A Road', and by the sound of it is the version on the album 'Second Thoughts'. It's a tune.....

  • Timeless

  • Seriously... what is the song playing in the first 27 seconds??? It's awesome!!!

  • @TheKnotcase "Walking Down A Road"

  • I would be surprised if I am the first but hell who knows, maybe I am #

Late Last Night is from the second album, Second Thoughts.

I wont pretend I am a smarty pants, its years ago you know so I looked it up.

    Its from Second Thoughts: 1976.

The LP Mental Notes was a unique thing. As was Second Thoughts. From there they evolved to mainstream style pop. (Sorry)

I saw them doing Mental Notes at the Opera house when I was 18. They changed my view on music - art. Why conform?

  • @ookland81 You're right!! It is from Second Thoughts, it hadn't been written when Mental Notes was released.

I just made the same comment but hadn't seen your correction. Cheers Mr Jezno

  • the trouble with the ralsoulproducts comment is that tim sings way way better than bigballs mcfartney and the beatles were art rock pretty much anyway.

  • Comment removed

  • Tim sounds so much like "Sir" Paul on this song. And funnily enough, Phil kinda sounds like John Lennon on some of the songs he sings. I guess they were trying to re-create that Beatles energy and move it into an Art Rock direction.

  • Great stuff, they were so ahead of this time. Is this available on DVD?

  • This song is. The dvd is simply called split enz.

  • I don't think this song is on Mental Notes the album, maybe the tour but It is on the Second thoughts album which was a rehash of mental notes with obviously extra songs from the tour.

  • Although technically, outside of Australia and New Zealand, Second Thoughts was the first album but was called Mental Notes.

  • What exactly do you mean? I'm pretty sure that mental notes was their first official album but later, the record companies had them put together second thoughts, it being awhile since mental notes came out and they wanted to keep them from slipping too far out of the public,s consciousness.

  • neol looks like the bloke who plays lt.kennedy in the hornblower series. great song

  • Can someone please tell me who is the person playing the guitar please? I am asking this question because it looks like Robert Gillies who is playing the saxaphone but it is not meantioned at the start, then that means that Wally Wilkinson is playing the guitar but that means that Tim Finn isn't in this video. Is someone able to tell me the characters in this song please? Thanks

  • tim finn is singing

  • Ok thanks, because some reason i thought that Phill judd sang both lovey dovey and late last night...strange

  • Phil wrote "Late Last Night" and co-wrote (with Tim)"Lovey Dovey" but it was Tim who sang both. Phil did sing lead on many of their better early songs, though. :)

  • @Babyhowdy233 He also sang Sweet Dreams!!! Spellbound etc

  • im pretty sure the guy playing guitar next to tim finn is phil judd

  • gthebutch,

the guy playing the guitar is none other than PHIL JUDD, who also wrote this gem. TIM FINN is singing lead, Robert Gillies is indeed playing sax and Eddie is of course on piano. Tim was ALWAYS in the band until the very last album "See Ya Round".

  • Sorry Babbyhowdy233 - Tim left the band BEFORE See Ya Round so he was not ALWAYS in the band!

  • If you read my comment below you will see that's exactly what I said:Tim was in the band UNTIL the last album "See Ya Round" was recorded, at which point he had ALREADY LEFT for a solo career. The last album Tim participated in the making of was "Conflicting Emotions", which Phil Judd painted the cover for by the way. :D perhaps didn't phrase that too clearly

  • Is that Neil Finn behind the bar?

  • Nope, percussionist Noel Crombie.

  • chur da song

  • Saw them at Portsmouth polytechnic in 1976/77. Absolutely brilliant, even frightening at the time and what a rapport with the small audience. I will never forget it and Mental Notes is fantastic. Never seen these vids before, what a find! As with other comments they peaked early and Tim Finn was just way ahead of his time. Don't think I have ever been to a more memorable and original gig.

  • This is on the split enz dvd isn't it? I'm sure of it...

They say Split Enz (and CH too I suppose) are the NZ equivalent to the Beatles, and it's so true, EVERYONE knows their songs without knowing quite how..

  • remember it like it was yesterday, good ol countdown.

  • JimEAPG, I've been pouring over your Enz videos. The early stuff is a revelation to me -- it's absolutely fascinating to see/hear their early days. Was there anybody even in the ballpark of the sound and look they had back then? Thanks so, so much for posting all this!

  • I just ADORE this song. There's something about Split Enz that just makes me ultra happy. I got to see them at the concert they did in Adelaide last year - it was truely one of the best I've ever been to.

  • Personaly i dont think that Crowded House had a patch on Slit Enz Timm Finn was just too good,,his writing too different and the shape and degree of difficulty of the music was just si supirior,,but thats just my opinion for what its worth,,Pete

  • Thanks for uploading this.

    Long live the Enz.

  • Saw this song performed in their first Aus concert, Blacktown 1976.They were booed off the stage! My fav Split Enz song. They and Bruce Springstenn my favo bands of all time. Thanks so much for posting that.

  • LOl im an ol Parra boy used to go up to the workers club Blacktown to see a few gigs, but spent most of my time at War and Peace,,ya may remember that bloodbath of a place,,lol,,it was so cool,,Pete

  • @charitymarbles Their first OZ appearance was late1974/early '75 at the Bondi Lifesaver in Sydney!!!

  • @charitymarbles First Oz tour Split Enz did was early 1975 when they arrived in Sydney to a crowded House at The Bondi Lifesaver in Bondi Junction and were introduced to an unsuspecting audience!! It was amazing!!

And this song hadn't been written yet. I know!! Cheers Mr Jezno

  • OMG another song from Mental notes my favourite album... whow i never saw that video too ,thanks so much for that gift and btw the woman who loves me is available on video? lol

  • I'll agree to buy this album only when they include the original cut of this song (which you are hearing) as a bonus track!

  • Thanks for the upload, this is a real gem. People who only know Crowded house or their later stuff should see this, because this was their best era

  • I so much agree. There are great artists like Bowie, Eno, Roxy Music, The Stranglers, King Crimson, early Genesis, Van der Graff, the beatles and there is SpLiT eNz.
