I would argue that even in Rome spectators were glad as heck NOT being down in the pits. As for the social cohesion argument, it's an empty argument because one would indeed have to show that social cohesion cannot be achieved by a plurality of alternative means, which is unlikely. And worse, social cohesion has always been used to justify the unethical. Nazis prosecuted jews for social cohesion. Women and slaves were denied vote for social cohesion. It's not an ethical principle at all.
Morality evolves with time, If society deemed something ok then it is whether it is just or not
Morality and Just are 2 separate things.
