  • Why isn't there a studio version of this song on YouTube?

  • OTB is by far my favourite Neil Young album. I can't wait for Volume 2 of the Archives to be released that covers from 1972...

  • My favorite song when it is my turn to drive the late shift on a road trip....

  • @mcdstuff I agree. It's my favourite Neil's album

  • Great song! Intro made me think of 'Feel the love', from the CSN&Y '88 album 'American Dream'.

  • I live in Los Angeles along the beaches always have, years ago Neil and Crazy Horse upto Topanga Canyon some barn looking venue I never dreamed all these yrs later it was just up this winding road from HWY 101 so many greats my daughter thinks I am so lucky there was the Ash Groove all the places on Sunset Bld. - Maybe I did get lucky again yes The Beatles, The Doors playing around town Venice Beach lol - what a ride with my main man Neil, the songs I played my alter ego - Bye

  • 90% of great rock artist ruin the music when the play live. neil is the exact opposite. i think his live songs are better than the studio versions. ( if that is even possible :)

  • I love you, Neil. Thank you for everything.

  • He's the best, and ever he will. No words. Thanks Neil.

  • seen neil at the s.e.c.c. in glasgow scotland some years back. always been my all time favourite. (V.mrrsn and P.gbriel a close second) does anyone else play the harmonica like him?!!? every time he blows it, it's like a song within a song!! excellent stuff. as usuall. K.O.R.I.T.F.World.

  • What a great tune .This version is particularly important to me as i was there.for whats thats worth

  • Amazing.

  • welcome to all the new fans to this great artist. Simply brilliant t!!!

Have a listen to another great Harry Chapin sadly no longer with us

  • This is an unbelievably deep song, and what an amazing performance ! A lament for all the hope of the 1960s which was crushed in the Nixonian regime, to be followed by Reagan/Thatcher and then Blair/Bush. Like all Neil Young's best stuff (listen to the "Tonight's The Night" album) this is both deeply sad and oddly strengthening.

  • I was listening to this without watching , I thought it was the studio version , it sounds exactly like my CD. Unbelievable its 2008 live!

  • Life is great

  • it's defiantely fair to say there isn't another performer who is as great today and was as great 45 years ago and every year in between than neil young. it's simply amazing - he's been in his prime for 45 years now and still going.

  • Nothing like being surrounded by a bunch of Martins.

  • I was there and it moves me now like it moved me then.

Thanks for posting and just remember...."they're all just pissing in the wind".

  • I still don't quite know how he does it

  • doesnt say shit.....life is short.

  • I miss the guy on the violin on the recorded version. It still makes me cry.

  • A rather depressing note, but this and 'Expecting to Fly' are my proposed funeral songs

  • Videos like this one are why I love youtube.

  • This is a truly beautiful song that gets your mind going. Brings a tear to my eye every time. I would want this and Harvest to be played at my funeral, be it tomorrow of 80 years from now , a beautiful timeless piece.

  • On the Beach is one of the most brilliant, underrated albums ever made.

  • Anther great Neil Young tune.I was here that night ,magical, real and i want more.

    regards

    jimmy

  • I've been listening to "On The Beach" in my truck almost constantly lately. Have always loved this song, haven't seen many live versions, thanks for posting this one! Neil is great and "Happy Birthday, Neil!" (yesterday)

  • The greatest song of all time IMO

  • @Tulleth100 i agree completely

  • I was at this concert and was so hyped up for it, I was blown away when he opened with this song - but the entire show was superb and he just gets better and better and am now looking forward to the new songs from 'Le Noise' album due out in September . .

  • @PeteMac2009 He opened with Ambulance Blues? That's an interesting choice hahaha...I LOVE the song, but I imagined it as a midset song, or maybe right before the encore.

  • @ekaminar Hi . . . yes, that was the opening song and everything else just got better and better as the set went on . . . and he also played Winterlong in the electric set - which I just adore !!

  • This is fantastic.

  • he's still cool and really great. this song makes me feellike crying. he's a dinosuar of music! CHEERS

  • asexual

  • The disjointed imagery of this song makes me picture Neil drifting off to sleep while reflecting on his past.

    Such a great song.

  • Neil is beyond most of us mortals...

  • I was there."its easy to get buried in the past"

    regards

    jimmy

  • Vielen Dank für dieses Video!!! In meinen 50 Lebensjahren habe keinen Titel öfter gehört als diesen. Thx Neil for the music ...

  • It's easy to get buried in the past.

  • I have a theory: Neil Young was born in a manger. And was given to us by a mighty deity to grace us with the gospel of rock.

  • Guys, it comes from the classic albut On the Beach. Check it out.

  • You're all just pissin' in the wind

  • The only Young songs in the pantheon better than this are Helpless and After the Gold Rush. I love, love, love, love this song. "I guess I'll call it sickness gone..."

  • thx

  • I was having a bit of a 'wake and bake', smoking a fat one this morning about 11am.I just heard this on radio 'Radió Na Life' - an Irish speaking radio station here. It was my first time hearing it and I googled some lyrics to find out the name of the track. I was suprised how long it goes on for. That radio station is so cool. One mintute you hear a 10min Neil Young then later it could be some sweet electronica.

    This track is sound!

  • Sounds like my kinda radio! I want to start a station like that some day..

  • That's cool. Versatility is the key! :P This video is now bringing memories of catching Mr. Young here in Dublin on a nice sunny evening, outdoors.

  • they were high off some great weed when they made this!

  • it was great to watch this on the big screen in streets of Toronto during the release of the Neil Young Trunk Show @ The TIFF Festival this year. When he says "I'm up in T.O...." the crowd made a nice load cheer! Too bad he never came down for that. Still waiting to see the legend.

Also when he mentions old Isabella. It was his old residence in Toronto a long time ago

  • all you need to know is neil... and bob.

  • Brilliant song from an equally brilliant album.

  • dig it, thanks

  • so fucking good. brings tears to my eyes every time i listen to this song. it took 20 years, but i decided this is my favorite song of all time.

i saw him about 7 months later in spokane, and this is exactly how it looked when he played it. one of the best times of my entire life.

  • My all time favourite as well, and no other song has deviated me from that fact as yet discovered.

  • My God I'm driven to tears every time I hear this since discovering it one year ago. I kinda knew Neil's stuff - but this is so sublime =it is like the Mona Lisa's gaze - in that its effect does not weaken with the passing years and changing trends. It will always speak like the expression of a pensive little girl, or a sigh.

    BRILLIANT.

  • It is about the entertainment business. I see the first verse being about Woodstock, mainly. And how that scene became industrialized and phony and how CSN etc became dinosaurs by not changing with the times (see: Thrashers five years later.) Later verses are about other players who had a hard time with Neil not playing the game. But how simple is that harp part yet SO melancholy and evocative? And on an old Martin D-18 too. One of the all-time greats.

  • oh, it's ok) thank you so much for the answer!

  • could someone help me to define what is this song about? i love it so much, and i understand separate phrases, but i'd like to know what it is really about?

  • sorry, should have put my post (above) as a reply to you

  • it's amazing-his voice is still the same as in 1974.

  • such a beautiful song!

  • Killer upload! Thanks man. ~cg5

  • thx for this vid - picture and sound quality are great and the song speaks for itself!

  • "Easy to get buried in the past, when you try to make a good thing last."

Every time I hear that line I just think "Damn! That sums up so much of our lives."

  • I have had hat line in my head the past few weeks, it reminds me of the zen concept that desire itself doesn't create suffering-but the desire for REPETITION of a previous experience

  • My favorite cut from a very overlooked yet beautiful album.

  • yes, i relate to this album more than any other. It is beautiful. Tonight's the Night, and Journey Through the Past are two others that I think are overlooked.

  • And don't forget American Stars and Bars. Will to Love has to be one of his deepest and unknown masterpieces.

  • great, done, as Neil has said, in the style of Bert Jansch...his 'Needle of Death' is here on youtube...it's like a faster version of this....but Neil's true genius is that from it he took something, which inspired this song and Needle and the Damage Done...and the rest is history

  • This record..On The Beach ...is the best...just occupying it's own beautiful space.

  • "An Ambulance can only go so fast, (cough cough)". Hope Neil isn't waiting too long. Great song, pity he didn't play it in Cork 2008. Here's hoping Dublin 2009 will be different.

  • +1 chief, O2, June, cant wait. Haunting stuff.

  • Cuando escucho esta cancion mis sentimientos son extremos, mi piel se eriza y mi cabeza vuela.

Neil quiero q sepas q te amamos!

  • We love you, Neil !

  • i returned to this after 'fork in the road' sends shivers up the back neil keep it coming and keep us amazed

    kbp

  • Haunting chord progression. Neil's the greatest!

  • That chord progression was unintentionally borrowed from Bert Jansch's song "Needle of Death" released in 1965. He was one of Neil Youngs influences. Listen to it.

  • I go to the farmers market every saturday. I live in T.O

  • You're just pissing in the wind!

  • incredible. my third favourite neil song (next to "albuquerque" and "powderfinger") from my second favourite neil album (next to 'tonight's the night').

    thanks ever so much.

  • still burning... amazing.

  • I was at this gig. Absolutely exceptional. Not many people there seemed to know this song, but I almost had a heart attack when he started playing it!

  • great to see

I thought my old acid buddy and I were the only ones who loved this song.

"An ambulance can only go so fast"

  • he charges not because he can but because ha has to. there is no asshole corporate sponsorship behind anything he does unlike nearly every other gig in town.

  • Una de las mejores canciones de neil, me encanta, gracias.

  • neil es todo!

  • can't wait for tomorrow's show. I'm definetly pissing in the wind and in my drawers in excitement. Shakey Deal takes the Twin Cities like a hurricane tomorrow.

  • i like the off beat feel

  • This guy is worth every penny he charges. #1 entertainer on the planet. Bar none!

  • Guitar, body, harmonica and voice in perfect harmony. Raw emotion. He's different from when he was young - now he's a another version of mesmerizing. A true living legend. This is better than the original 'On the Beach' version.

  • the air's always magic when he plays. a great musician. he can still sing after these years. hard to come around.

  • This is about as good as it gets. im involved with an ambulance fund, called CAFE.

I first saw NY at RFH 1972 and still this guy hits the spot.

    Rust never sleeps

  • its hard to say the meaning

its easy to get buried in the past

we just trying to make a good thing last

    one of the greatest songs

    it gets inside

and you start to walk that rythm

    for years.

not many musicians today can do that to you.

    i think hes pretty good.

  • very,very well said.

pretty good? more than pretty good...

  • perchè mi commuovo ogni volta che la sento?

  • oh mother goose !!

    love it

  • Peace Peace Peace...one of the most beautiful...

  • oOOOOOOOOOOO E, THAT HIGH SCHOOL CRUISIN MUSIC-FOR SOME PRARIE HEADS IN A BUICK REGAL V8 ON EIGHT TRACK AND TIGHT PANTS. I CAN SMELL THE VYNAL SEATS SWEATING TO ASSES NOW. PEACE

  • with early criticism, from, "Rolling Stone," etc., "Heart Of Gold," or "Old Man," simply, overnight, made this previous gem of music and lyrics, "Genius," as I recall reading with a smile on my face.

No, I wasn't smiling because Neil had been vindicated, so to speak.

I was smiling, because it seemed to me, after that many years, he probably didn't or hadn't ever bothered to read the critics comments.

I say that because Neil always states, "I write for myself, and hopefully others like it."

  • I have never known anyone that expresses as much as emotion than Neil when they play. It is so thick you can feel it. I tear up when I watch this man.

  • This hits so true. Thanks for this

  • 2:01 has to be one of the meanest looks I've ever seen RIGHT at the camera... hope he gets to tour over here again

  • yep great look there...saw a similar one at a show in Alburquerque in 2000, the house video guy was filming near the front of the stage, from the floor..and getting too close to Neil's backup singers..his wife and sister....Neil was weilding his Les Paul like a lumberjack and shot that guy a look that could kill....he backed off ..ha

  • I was there xD, overpriced tickets but great gig

  • overpriced! did you see what madonna was charging?like chalk & cheese, Neils the legend, madonna just thinks she is.

  • well still, nearly £60, my parents were payin for it so doesnt matter 2 much since theyve never given me much cash anyways.

It was a good gig but if u compare £60 with £5 for Carvin Jones who was amazin, there is a big value difference.

  • overpriced? Neil Young is a lengend. i got tickets for next months show in L.A., 100 dollars for floor tickets. this is Neil Young, i'd pay a fortune to see him play his music.

  • yeh but why does he need to charge so much? i suppose its nothin compared to rollin stones tickets though

  • cause he can i guess.

  • This is one of my favorite NY songs. Thanks for posting this and getting us up close and personal with the Legend. I got to see him at the Fox in Detroit for Greendale from the 2nd row!!! Ben Keith has been with him since Harvest in 1970. If you could play in any NY band for 38 years...WHY NOT! I sure would follow Neil to the ends of the globe to be in his band.

  • He doesn`t get lost with the muse.

  • He's been a part of my life since Buffalo Springfield. He keeps getting better and better, touching my heart with his melodies and deep expressions of life.

  • I was at Manchester on Wednesday. Magical. This was highlight of first half. No Hidden Path and Tonight's The Night highlights of electric set.

  • I was ta the Manchester Apollo, he played this one second song in..........made my spine tingle, the guy's a legend.

  • I was at the Manchester Apollo, this song made my spine tingle......the Guy's a legend

  • Nothing short of a living legend. He is pulling out the Neil Young tour that will be talked about for years.

  • I was there.

Was a bit late but this song just started as soon as i walked in.

I was about three rows back from this angle.

    Amazing.

    :)

  • I guess we are all "pissing in the wind"

  • Fantastic video! Thanks so much for filming...:-)

  • Brilliant version of a superb song! I wish I could have been in London! Thanks for posting!

  • Beautiful song, great video! I'm glad Neil played it in Amsterdam too!

  • A great night, this and Down By the River the showstoppers

  • I have been looking forward to view a good Video this song for a long time. the Best Live Video I have seen. I saw Neil in November at Massey Hall, "Back in T.O (Toronto) keeping jive alive"

  • Glad you like it. I've put Hey Hey, My My up too. It was indeed a great show.

  • i love you! best song of the night :)
