Yes and no. A lot of the things that happened in the show are actually taken from the ten years of research that Tom Fontana did when he was trying to get the show up and running. But there is no prison where you have that much violence on that regular of a bases. At least not in the US.

I've always thought that Keller threw himself off that balcony, making it appear to be Beecher's fault because it would force him to go through even more trouble to get out of Oz. It just seems like something Keller would do, to leave some kind of lasting impression. Because in the end, you know, it's all about Keller's needs. ;) I absolutely love that character, mmhmm.

I always leaned more towards an accident because I never really bought the fact that Keller would have just given up on getting Beecher back. Also I don't think someone would go through the trouble of killing of the entire Aryan Brotherhood just to jump over a railing in the end.
But how would you explain Keller saying: "Beecher don't!!" when he jumps off? The fact that he says "Beecher don't!!" means that he wants to screw Beecher over, like he has done a hundred times before. Which makes the ending kind of dumb...because I agree with you scissorknot, Keller would never give up (as he really loved Beecher and as the manipulative son of a b*tch that he is; he would probably be able to win him back)

See but me and you differ on the opinion of Keller "jumping". I do not think he jumper. I think he was pushed by Beecher. I do not think Beecher was trying to kill him just get away from him. So him yelling "Beecher no." would have been a natural reaction.
Keller actually killed himself but set Beecher up to make it look like Beecher had killed him. Keller wanted to be 'together forever' by Beecher ending up on Death Row for the murder - seriously screwy relationship, but still luuurve! *rolls eyes* ^_^

No they are just two of the several different characters on Oz. But yes the show does focuses on the daily life of the inmates of Oswald Maximum Security Penitentiary. Mainly the ones in Cell Block Five known as Em City. The show ran from 1997 to 2003 and had 6 seasons.
Technically Keller (Meloni's character) is bisexual. In my personal opinion he does a much better job on OZ then he has even done on SVU. The reason behind that comment is because Oz is a character driven show. When your main characters are locked in a prison for every single episode you have got to have good writing and acting to make the show watch able. Like Oz does.

mmm ... just when I thought I knew all there was to know and along there comes somebody who shows you what its all about ... like in that song ... what was the name "Killing me softly" - in other words - great video - really touched me.
Keller threw himself over, shouting "Beecher don't" as he fell...his final attempt to keep Beecher to himself. In other words, Keller intended to frame Beecher for his death in order to keep him locked up in Oz, alone and in some twisted way "his" forever.
Because Keller had been in and out of prison since the age of 17 he lived by the rules of prison and therefore he did not go back on his word with the Aryan and ends up breaking his arms and legs. That is how he ended up falling in love but he still screwed him over.
Because he had made a deal with a fellow inmate to have Beecher kill himself. While he was trying to get Beecher to fall in love so he could later break his heart and have Beecher commit suicide. Keller ends up falling in love with Beecher during that time.
It was how the relationship started out. Toby (the blonde) had a feud going on with an Aryan and Chris was employed by him to get Toby to kill himself. They ended up falling in love but Keller still screwed him over and basically made it where Toby did not rust him. Their relationship goes through a lot of getting together, breaking up, and getting back together. They both love each other but they do things that piss each other off.
