hey great playing for a beginner.as you go through the half stroke pretend your holding a pen but closer the middle the tipper.pretend your actually holding a paintbrush and your painting the damn thing.for the double stick style, half through pretend your opening a door knob.these techniques will aid you.also learn slow build up speed gradually.loosen up that wrist girlie, and get that hand moving behind the drum, youll be pro soon enough.write me if u a query,
Ok, yea, I want to do this. I have been asking my husband for one for about 2 years. I would love to play one in our church. The only "rhythum" we have right now is about 5 tamborines. I play the lead. I would love to change it up.
I bought that exact same kind of drum. You will want to ditch it and go for a waltons. Mine started to pull and rip from the tacks randomly one day after I had moistened it.
Treat your skins to a lot of sweat - wipe it off wherever and apply, better than lotion, after that you may want to think of taking a bit of very fine sandpaper and scrub away. The fine bodhrans that I saw in Ireland had a light suede-like texture - or as the lads would have it ''like a woman's skin''
Apart from what is already said, I have a few pointers: 1) Your drumming is a bit repetetive. Try adding breaks every now and again. If you can, add the occasional triplet as well. 2) Loosen the skin! Not much, just a wee bit - it sounds like you're beating a piece of wood, not a piece of goat. :x (Of course, this really comes down to a matter of personal preference, I just happen to like the softer sounds of softer skins :))
Hey, first well done! I'm learning to play too, i'm probably about the same stage as you are and i practice on the Corrs version of this song! Hope you post more so we can see your progress!
Sweet! I'm going to Ireland this summer and am going to pick up a bodhran, I've been watching your vid over and over with a frisbee and pencil trying to play! Is it easier than it seems?!
cool i went to Ireland a couple years ago to Cork and Dulin (looking up our Irish ancestory and bought another bodhran ive got with a harp on the front. It will get easier ive been playing about a year. Apparently i did the completly wtong hand wrist action at first but was corrected but as always Practise Makes Perfect!
Cool - I have a similar bodhran, I started off with holding the tipper differently - like a pencil with the
tip pointed at oneself. It was awkward at first but soon I was playing with some bands and sessions.
It's great fun, I responded with a video that I made that shows several bodhran players, starting off with myself in the band I play with (Cold Water Dog)
thank you soo much guys on your advice will definatly take it up and im still practising I'm also doing Irish music for my final art piece at collage (for fine art) so if anyone knows any other irish music please let me knowxx
Your timing is a little off. But at least you are trying. You have the basics keep praticing and you'll get it. Your left hand needs to make some tonal changes. You can do it.Watch and listen to other players as much as you can, and good luck.
Coming along nicely! I have two instructional videos(VHS, Stephan Hannigan and Mel Mercier) that I will send you for the price of shipping if you want them. A word of advice, don't worry about all the super complex techniques, simpler playing that complements the tune and the other instruments is much more appreciated and welcomed by other players in a session than all the fancy solos that you can see on this site. Those guys are playing by themselves for a reason.
Not too bad at all -- a few timing issues, but practice will take care of those. Look into moving your hand to the top or bottom of the drum to get a little bit more resonace out of the head. Then, you can start moving it about a bit to get some tonal difference.
Wow, that sounds really cool! I know barely anything about the bodhran (I'm a violinist; my boyfriend is the one who's going to be taking it up) but that's awesome!
there'ssome good playing in there. Try to emphasize your downstrokes a more. Also, you can add a few clicks and listen to Sharon's downstrokes; when she plays hers, you play yours. Other than that; good job!
