Noooo mystery? Water dissolves limestone, salt deposits etc, under the road. At some point they collapse, sometimes having massive proportions, like 70 ft across, 300 feet deep or so, you could drop a ten storey building into one.

Some fill with water, other remain dry if well drained, (no pun intended) others fill with water and connect via subterranean passages.

This one seems to be small, 8 or 9' radius, and about 3' deep
