I have the combat karambit, and I spin it twice backwards to switch positions. I just got used to doing it that way... I would say, do what is most comfortable and safe for you. I don't think there is any rule as to say how much or how few times you can spin it... The only issue I would see is, the more you spin it the more likely your going to loose your finger position and may slice yourself up real good. Love the knife and always carry mine.
You really arent supposed to "twirl" the Karambit around. Spin or rotate once yes as you can use it to go from a reverse grip to a forward or extended grip, but twirling it?! hell no. Your adrenalin pumps hard enough as it is in the event of using a karambit in a defensive situation. This can cause even a very well rehearsed/experienced knife fighter to make a mistake, now add some tactiCOOL twirling into the mix and you might just find yourself dropping your blade/cut yourself.
Karambits in general are a good choice, I thnk Emersons wave feature is great. Nothing is faster, not even an auto as you have to pull the knife out and press a button vs. pull out a knife and its already deployed. I just lost my Combat karambit I had it for about 2 1/2-3 years. If I were to do it all over again (actually I am ) I would buy a Commander Karambit version as the blade design is better IMO for EDC purposes whereas the Combat version is really only good for 1 function. YMMV
Emerson Karambit set up for reverse grip draw is the fastest and smoothest draw I've found. Nice video, I'll be posting some of my karambit techniques soon as I get a camcorder, have you seen the Emerson Karambit DVD's?
The spin was no actual use in combat. It could maybe throw off an inexperienced enemy, but that would be all. Other than that the speed is actually very nice love the knife. :D have a great day - Chris
Wow..I guess since Emerson does it,it must be correct. Dont be silly, the knife is meant to be spun only change grip. Any more spinning is not useful in combat according to professionals. Google it and you will learn young grasshopper.
Good point. Allow me to rephrase: Yes, the P'kal's a specialized knife, but I don't feel it's as esoteric as a karambit. I'm no expert - to be frank, I'm far from it - but I feel that pikal methodology offers far more practical and transferable skills than does karambit methodology. Different strokes and all that.
Hope that makes sense. I'm not usually all that coherent when I'm tired. :)
Yeah it makes sense. Both are SD knives; the karambit might need some intrinsic familiartiy for effective use, but any schmuck can easily pick one up and apply the point to an attacker with effective results. The P'kal seems more second nature though.
She put a nice gash in one of my shirts once--closest call. The friend of the guy I traded this one to got sliced by it. Guess it doesn't like to be moved around haha.
You suck.

I am not too proud to admit that I have stabbed myself in the wrist twirling a karambit. Same model as this video, too.

Its not supposed to be spun.

Says who? Look at videos on the Emerson Knives website and you'll see Ernie spinning the karambit no differently than the party in the video.

I recently sold mine to fund a Spyderco P'kal. Great knife, but too specialized for me. :)
the2ndsaint 4 years ago
That's why I culled it off it wasn't getting much use. But isn't the P'kal kinda specialized as well?
