  • actually i was able to guess about five of the gestures myself, i guess i am getting better at understanding japanese now

  • I've gotten most of these right apart from the talk too much, that's because I watch WAYYY too much anime ._. It's also what made me want to know Japanese though!;3

  • I can count 99999 in Japanese! Ichi, ni, san, yon/shi, go, roku, nana/shichi, hachi, kyuu/ku, juu, juu ichi, juu ni, juu san, juu shi, juu go, juu roku, juu shichi, juu hachi, juu kyuu, ni juu, ni juu ichi, ni juu ni........ San hyaku shichi juu kyuu....................... Go sen kyuu hyaku juu ichi................. Kyuu man kyuu sen kyuu hyaku kyuu juu kyuu. Beat that! Just kidding, but yeah... Yesss!

  • can you tell me,what should I learn? katakana, kanji or hiragana?

  • and i thought the last one was a bow that means giving a high respect for someone ,(did i get that right?) i watch a lot of animes so i got 7/8 right

  • Aaahh! I wanna know the meaning of that gesture...! And I want that soundtrack, too....

  • Arigatho guzaimasu..sayounara..

  • @afandynawawi :) arigatou gozaimasu.

  • @PCOSJess :)..koniciwa

  • @afandynawawi hajime mashite:)

  • So... what IS the gesture? ^_^

  • well the last gesture... we have it too :P but i dont know if it does have the same meaning: is it like "ha ha in ur face"....

  • haha omg this is so great, its like the japanese even have sign language of some sort, so great :D

  • I was just wondering, are all these gestures okay to use with people you don't know, that you have just met? Or does it seem informal to use them at some times/with some people?

  • @ButaNoTsubasa sually In Japan we don't use these gestures to strangers except those in Lesson 2 and 3 (sometimes number 1 is OK). To be politer, bowing is always better in any awkward situation. But you can use all of them to children and animals that you have just met. Japanese cats can appreciate them.

  • Thank You So Much For These Lessons! Not Only Does This Teach Me The Body Language, But Short Statements As Well!

  • Oh wow, I always wondered where that gesture came from! Thank you so much for the amazing videos!

  • I think the last gesture is a way to make other people feel jealous from myself and to express that you think that you're ahead of them

  • i wonder what is that gesture for...the one which hiroko sensei showed at the end of this lesson!

  • @Ichigocrazy1 It means "goma-suri", or literally "sesame seed grinder." But it really means someone who is a brown-noser/suck-up, or uses flattery as a means to get ahead or get something they want.

  • what does that hand grinding gesture mean? the japanese woman in my work did that when i told her she's pretty...pls, answer me:) tnx

  • @ximeimei0 The literal message behind that gesture is grinding roasted Sesame seeds in one of those old style stone bowls. The intended message is telling the recipient they're being brown nosers/sweet talkers.

In short: she called you a suck up, man

  • @Koiyuki hahahaha! but she said thanks afterwards in a very shy way... ;p

  • hehe thank you for your awsome videos :)

  • Arigatou !!!!

  • im sorry but that one was too easy

anyways, i live in sapporo, is there something i could do here in japan to help my grammar?

  • what's nice! is that some or most of the gestures are the same in my country " Morocco" and the meaning is almost the same!

  • I have a Japanese friend who moved here from Yamagata last year. I've had many Japanese lessons before, which have put me on a level a bit more than beginner, but still Elementary. However, with these lessons, I won't feel like a total doof when she says or does something I don't know! Thank you JapanesePod101!

  • That means friends in American Sign Language. LOL. I guessed "I'm gonna kill you." cuz I've seen yakuza doing that with knives before torturing the victims, lol. Namely, Versus by Kitamura Ryuhei.

  • @MoQuake

    oAo;;

    Whoa. XD

  • We need lesson 9. It has been a pleasure to view these videos.

Do you have a CD that one could buy with various japanese gestures? Please let me know.

  • Ooh yeah! I accutually got it right from guessing in the previous video! Haha, and I said it from completely out of nowhere. XD

  • こんにちは!! Next lesson はどこですか。

  • Hiroko needs a TV show where she explains stuff about Japan (like a teacher) everyday. If you join JapanesPod is Hiroko featured in the lessons? I stumbled onto some dude with an Aussie accent.....and I felt ripped off by his misleading thumbnails.

  • @IDOLSMASHER hahaha, TV show? that would be funny, i mean, interesting! hehe.

  • Kunichiwa Japanesepod101-Chan! I like to learn Japanese from you! Plz plz Make Video 9 soon! =D

  • what is Kitty in japanese?

  • @Lucario168 i think it's neko

  • @xXIzelhXx so in japanese it would be witten ねこ?

  • @Lucario168 Yes :) Neko is cat - if you want to be specific and say "kitten", that's "koneko"

  • @japanesepod101 oh thanks :D こねこ is kitten right?

  • @Lucario168 Yes, that's correct! Or in kanji it would be 子猫 :)

  • @japanesepod101 Thanks a lot :) ねこ 、 こねこ。。。 子猫.

=3 i think i got the hang of it!

  • When is lesson 9 coming?

  • These lessons are SO awesome.

  • JapanesePod we would like more lessons with the famous Hiroko please

  • Who want to learn Japanese with me?

  • I love the song! Does it have a name? Can i download it somewhere? I want it!

  • @coccinelsucrer Sorry, it's not available for download anywhere. The song was made for us by one of our listeners :)

  • @japanesepod101 One of your listeners made you this song. That is pretty awsome

  • @japanesepod101

Can i really learn japanese quick and easy if i join the site?

So i mean like fluently or is it more for fun and for beginners to get in contact with it?

  • OMG! It's like italian !!!!!

  • I just read in a body language book today that the Japanese consider it disgusting to blow your nose into a handkerchief and instead just snort or spit. Is this true?

  • @robotpanda77 I heard that they use handchiefs there to dry there hands(after washing them)

  • I don't know, considering Jpods tendency to reply to comments, I am suspicious they didn't respond to this one. I think it is true and they know the culture gap might be misunderstood by those abroad. So if they use them for their hands, that is all they use them for.

  • Can anyone tell me how can I watch the next lesson(lesson 9)???

  • i couldnt find the part 9 :((

  • That is really soo interesting! Thank you for these great videos! ^-^

  • haha you cought me off guard! i learned that gesture to mean "friends" from American Sign Language! But you have to somewhat curve the fingers.. that's the only differance... ^__^

  • ok you got me on this one

    I didn't know this one.

  • Can't say I see this one too often in daily use.

  • lol, I'm starting to use these gestures daily XD

    great vids!

  • This is a japanese gesture? My family does it all the time to imply the same thing. :D

  • Oh really? Interesting! Where is your family from, by the way?

  • I wasn't sure if we had any relatives so I asked my mother and it turns out that my great aunt was from Japan! I never knew! Do you think it's possible that one gesture was passed on for three generations?

  • how cute is she???

  • Thank you very much!

    5 shuriken

  • Looks like what I would do if I was indicating someone was stirring up someone.

  • I was right - about the origin of the gesture!!! I am so smart.

  • I am so smart! I am so smart! S-M-R-T! I mean S-M-A-R-T

  • You must be smart too! Yay!

  • @Koiyuki lol

  • @Koiyuki nice simspons reference ;) XD

  • @Koiyuki Shop Smart, shop S mart. YOU GOT THAT???

  • @Koiyuki copyed from the simpsons!

  • @Koiyuki LOL I just watched that Simpson's clip today (and now I'm seeing this comment on a completely unrelated video about learning Japanese)...

  • @Koiyuki Homer Simpson FTW! xD

  • @Koiyuki the simpsons?

  • Love these quick vids. :)

I've been wondering what that song that's been playing at the end is called... it's really catchy.

  • I will remeber this one! Samurai-swords...

    MVHH

  • Yay I got it right :D

  • I guess that one means "suckin' up" as in seiji (not sure what the kanji for this one is, though).

  • The word is せじ, which is 世辞 in kanji :)

  • Nice! やった!

  • I think the last one means somebody is greedy or has a lot of money

  • Guess: you do the second gesture when you want to piss off someone (in my culture)

  • Guess: To help someone? The ASL sign for "help" kinda looks like that but instead you lift your fist as if you're helping someone up.

  • It means to kiss up someone. (get on someone's good side.)

  • Like when you apologize to them publicly in a video, or something like that? :P

  • I'm not sure, but the second gesture makes me think it's something related to cooking. It's like she's punding something and stirring a pot at the same time.

  • She's really cute, I hope someday i'll meet her and the Jpod101 team

  • We hope to meet you too someday~

In the meantime, good luck with your studies. ^^

  • In american sign language it means work. So far I have been wrong 8 times. I don't thing there is any chance of me being right.

  • cant wait for the next vid! :D

  • That's the spirit!
