• I just saw this opera on dvd. And I feel so sorry for Lucia. That brother of her's is a very bad man!

  • Nobody does it like this two.

  • Wow! I did not know Joan died last year. as an Opera singer I heard nothing about it. She was definitely a legend in her own right as well as Maestro Pavarotti. R.I.P to both of them

  • God must be an opera lover.

  • I've been re listening to many of the legends of that era, Beverly Sills (Anna Bolena), Sutherland in all sorts of stuff, Caballe, Verrett, Price, and of course Pavarotti. And I was lucky enough to see each and every one of them live, many of them multiple times. To think that in those days we though of voices like Martina Arroyo as second string, what wouldn't we give to have a voice of that size and beauty singing today. Yes, yes, yes it was a GOLDEN age.

  • THIS TWO OPERA LEGENDS SHALL REMAIN IN OUR MEMORIES NOW AND FOREVER!!!

  • Thanks, For all youe records... Dame Sutherland ...Thanks ...

  • JOAN SUTHERLAND DIED OCTOBER 10,2010...AT THE AGE OF 83....RIP MISS SUTHERLAND

  • We lost such one of the most influencial-people in the World.May the great Joan Sutherland rest in peace...

  • god bless you both two great opera voices now in heaven

at least we still have domingo

  • Great duet! Vale Dame Joan Sutherland.

  • RIP Joan Sutherland,

  • These two were the greatest. We will never see their like again.

  • not even pavarotti could sing that e-flat...

  • I miss Pavarotti.. He was the greatest.

  • Did Joan do the Mad Scene at this performance?

  • @ChrisStockslager

Unfortunately no. But there is the Edgardo's last scenes.

  • Damn!

  • Luciano is wonderful, so beautiful and sweet and of course amazing tenor and sutherland is also wonderful, thank you very much for this post.

  • that gave me butterflies in my tummy, it was amazing! :)

  • that was awesome

  • NOW that is real singing.....remember it so well from the MET....splendid!

  • It's 2 AM and I'm clapping. What a wonderful duo!

  • grande Pavarotti y Sutherland, grandes, como eios jamas!!! Maestros!!

  • dont say a thing... that all!! xD they ARE!!!

  • Comment removed

  • i hope you mean that in a good way....

  • nice both

  • Great!

  • Ten thousand times Brava/Bravo!!!

There is just no competition for these two.

  • It just doesn't get any better than this - and Joan outsings any soprano yesterday and today in this role A performance I attended in Fort Worth (2008) that starred Futral and Costello was excellent.

  • she could produce any sound written in the notes

  • Bloody amazing, thanks for posting it up!

  • Emotion!

  • Wow now i get it when they say, " Not until the fat lady sings lol..."

  • Naughty!...heh, heh...but Sutherland wasn't really fat, she was just a large woman...tall and wide, but not really "fat". Even Pavarotti--for awhile--was just a big man.

  • She is very big boned. Her jaws are amazing. But hey... Her voice is wonderful. She's the best. I think she's lovely. <3

  • Me too. And I think she has one of the best smiles!

  • actually it's mostly the clothing

  • Dame Joan's biographer, Norma Major, said that Sir Richard had a lot to do with his wife's costuming, that he'd say, "Make her look like a ship in full sail". Rather fitting for a beautiful voice that would fill an entire concert hall.

  • anyone know the song their performing?

  • It´s 'Verranno a te sull'aure', it comes in the second scene of the first act.

  • @Pennywisea It's "Verranno a te sull'aure" and it´s from the end of the first act of lucia de lammermoor

  • It brings tears to my eyes at 3.39 when Pavarotti sings 'remember, we are united by Heaven!'.

  • but Dame Joan isn't dead. She is still alive, though in her 80s.

  • what is the title of this excerpt?

  • The commonly used title is 'Verranno a te sull'aure'.

  • Sutherland was not only a great singer she was a great human being unlike Callas who was a great singer but a real witch, nasty to all around her.

  • The most beautiful voices in heaven is singig in one scene! I never doubt that it's the best version of this opera.

  • Buenísimo los dos juntos haciendo esta opera

  • i die for pavarotti's accent, the manner how he speaking in singing. he was so cute, amazing.

  • This is just a incredible and breathtaking stage performance! 5 Stars!!!

  • vocal beauty trumps outward beauty EVER TIME!

  • Could there be any more morons on one page? That jaw that is so funny/unpleasant is responsible for a lot of that incredible sound.

  • Not gonna lie, her fantastic, incredible, irreplaceably massive Joanie chin definitely accounts for 5% of why she's my absolute favourite opera singer of all time, EVER!

    ♥ La Stupenda

  • Heaven is blessed.

  • Two great singers in one scene!!!!! That's amazing!!!!!!!!

  • this representation was indeed collected in Coven Garden in 1977 or 1978, I do not know any more!

  • No, this video was filmed at MET in 1987.

  • You are exactly right. This was part of a special night at the Met in 1987 entitled "An Evening With Sutherland And Pavarotti." It was telecast live on PBS . It consisted of fully staged acts from three operas: Lucia (Act 1), Rigoletto (Act 3), and the final act of Traviata. The Rigoletto is particularly great, featuring an amazing quartet in which Sutherland ends it with a high D (at the age of 60!), and the great Leo Nucci as Rigoletto. The clip is on YouTube.

  • I seem to have misplaced SuperMan's chin...anyone seen it?

  • How rude! The one of the greatest sopranos ever! Get a life!

  • hahahahahahahahahahaah....i think i found it!.......!!!

  • I find it absurd to see Netrebko & Alagna's names used in the same sentence as Sutherland & Pavarotti. The reason should be obvious and would need to more than a half brain and a modestly working ear!

  • It seems to me obvious that at that time there were no competition for Pavarotti and Sutherland, nor there is competition today if he count the recordings. Your comment is well stated. Thanks!

  • is this from the Met?? id love to see the whole thing!! i think the DVD is just highlights of different operas they performed together.

  • ive recently fallen in love with this opera, this one of the best moments i think. donizetti was a genius, i'm so pleased i discovered his work.

i do find this version a little rushed though, but excellent singing of course!

  • if u haven;t done it yet, get the sutherland/pavarotti/milnes/ bonynge version in CD. U will die listening the recording...

  • i am indeed in the process of getting it! thanks anyway tho :D

  • Thank you so much, SueAnnNivens! Could you please tell me when was this video recorded?

  • I think 1987, actually, it was just released on DVD!!

  • Awesome! The best duet ever to hit an opera stage.

  • To criticise these two legends of the opera stage for acting is laughable, in my opinion. Pavarotti and Sutherland have put on record some of the best, most sensitive duet singing ever. Netrebko & Alagna?? Not even in the same league!

  • You fool. If I liked Britney and Paris do you really think I;d be watching opera videos on youtube? Moreover I stated that Pav and Suth sound wonderful. I stand by my comments. If the acting component of opera were irrelevant then why bother wearing costumes and performing amongst sets? They don;t even remotely look or act convincing in this video. Pav, however, did do a nice acting job with the light comedy roles he sang.

  • In general, I agree with you. Opera has two components - singing and acting. But the singing component is much more important than the acting component of the performance. If someone sings excelently, you can forgive him poor acting. If someone sings poorly even the best acting cannot save the performance. Only few opera singers had both components very good. From contemporary singers for example Anna Netrebko.

  • Everything consists in singing both dramatic nature, and staginess, and, that is required from the OPERA; and it speaks (critic): " only singing " - also does not understand, that this not only the most difficult, but that this all rest includes in itself ".

P.S. Netrebko sings as the second-year student // imho

  • Sutherland, 61 y/o in this vid, retired 3 years later. Pav 52. For them to be able to sing these parts at their age is nothing short of a miracle. What you said about their appearance was crass & uncalled for. Maybe they look "comical" & shameful to you, but for 2 people that gave so much in their prime, I think they deserve a little slack in their older years. The public clamored for them (even to his dying day.)

  • acting up to corelli or domingo's standard is fine, but to the standard of today, that's too much acting. the acting is starting to outweigh the singing nowadays.

  • Just look at Dessay...

  • Sutherland - divine. Pavarotti - divine. Both of them - undescribable... absolutely great.

  • This was a great concert. They did scenes from Lucia, Rigoletto and Traviata if I'm not mistaken. Haven't seen this in years.

  • Shameful that they are not young? Or more photogenic? If it really up sets you, you could got and see Johnny Depp and JayLo do Lucia, but I can't imagine it would sound very good.

  • I'd see Johnny Depp in anything! But if he was in this, I'd hope to hell they'd got a great singer to dub the voice! Lol.

  • Nothing superficial about you! Im sure your gorgeous & can sing them under the table. Bet you LOVE Britney & Paris. Who cares if they can sing - they LOOK GOOD! That's all that matters to people like you. Real talent = how fine you are. How pitiful. Send us a photo when your their age and lets see what you look like. And while your at it, post a picture of your mansion & paycheck so we can see how rich & powerful you are. In other words, who cares what you think. AS IF.

  • Is that the guy who died recently? I've seen him on PBS a few times and he was so amazing!

  • Yes. Luciano Pavarotti, the greatest tenor ever. A voice like his comes along once in a millenium. He died September 6, 2007 of pancreatic cancer.

  • It took a great makeup man to make the gorgeous Miss Callas look like THAT!

She was an amazingly talented, beautiful world-class soprano and a WONDERFUL VOCALIST!

Finally,a soprano I actually ENJOY listening to!

  • Can someone send me the lyrics, please...

    Thanks.

  • ... the lyrics, dear Haristotel:

Verranno a te sull'aura I miei sospiri ardenti,

    Udrai nel mar che mormora

    L'eco de' miei lamenti...

    Pensando ch'io di gemiti

    Mi pasco, e di dolor.

    Spargi una mesta lagrima

    Su questo pegno allor.

  • Dearest dalferr,

    Thank you very much!

    Greetings

  • Dearest dalferr,

    Thank you very much!

    Greetings

  • Ilove both, but more luciano pavarotti, he had so beautiful and sweet voice. very very sweet. bravo.

  • 'La Stupenda" is just that! Funny to think she was originally a mezzo-soprano.

  • Is there a way to get this on DVD?

  • You can find the video on amazon, let´s hope the deutsch grammophon releases it soon on dvd.

  • Decca just put it out on DVD.

    Happy hunting!

  • sutherland might have a fantastic voice, but her acting doesn't measure up!!!!! Mind you u can't have it all !!!!!

  • If I want to see great acting I'll go to the theatre. She was the greatest soprano of the past 60 years, and acted well enough. Opera is foremost about the music and the voice;no one went to the opera house to see her act! pje

    pje

  • Bravo!

  • Omg - I truly hope that you are just making a joke. If you weren't, then I suggest suicide as soon as possible. Its your only option.

  • Pavarotti's voice its unconfusing...

  • Beautiful performance of God given talent.

  • favoloso...mi fa venire i brividi...

  • Yes,both getting on in years...but,remember that the great Sutherland is almost 10 years older that pavarotti. She never lost her confidence, such a great technique, great artist....

  • just brilliant..What a opera couple

    Absolutely amazing

  • wonderful

  • He is the god of opera.

  • Both Joan and Luciano were getting on in years when this was made but they never missed a note. True greatness.

  • what's the name of this duet?

  • I don't know what it's called, but o know it starts something like this:

'a veranno a te sull'aure, i miei sospiri ardenti, udrai nel mar che mormora, l'eco di miei lamenti..."

    Please excuse the appalling spelling!!

  • very good my friend

  • (verrano a te !) .. sul aure i mie sospiri ardenti.... They(sighs) will come to you in the air , my sighs of...

  • And we lost Pavarotti today..I was in the chorus in the 1960's when Joan Sutherland and Luciana Pavarotti did this opera. He was young and up and coming.

  • I mean Luciano...

  • You are so lucky! I'd give anything to have sung with them.

  • She sounds better than Maria Callas, even at 60. Joan rules all!

  • Loved your comment!!

  • thankyou again, Stephy, for posting all the videos that i cannot find on amazon either Amazon or Ebay!!

  • Please, a little more perspective. Sutherland is 60 here, and, as any singer knows, the first act can be a bit rough since the voice hasn't warmed up yet. If Joan was only 35 or 40 the cloudy tone or wobble in the middle would be alarming, but hardly so at this age. On the contrary, quite expected. A very nice performance considering.

  • They really belt it out. Complete absence of subtleties and imagination in the phrasing! Pavarotti's voice is still imposing, Sutherland's has become alarmingly pulsating and lost flexibility.

  • Actually, it's not an aria, but a duet. Sutherland and Pavarotti are older here, but still amazing. I suppose La Stupenda was already about 60 here, am I right? Her voice still sounds very creamy and steady, however, and her technique is superb. Pavarotti is in great voice, too!

  • This from "An evening with Suthlernad and Pavarotti", n'est-ce pas?

  • thats not lucia del lammermoor is the Traviata.

  • Actually, it is Lucia, it´s the second scene of the first act, if I´m not wrong. It´s "Verrano a te sull´aure", a beautiful duet between Lucia and Edgardo.

  • SUEANN YOUR RIGHT ON THE MONEY,

  • Damn... you know a lot!

  • When and where was this?

  • Magic. Great aria, and brilliant singing by both of them.

  • It doesn't get any better than this. I love this duet. It is not of this world and those two can't be beat.

  • Indeed lovely and powerful voices! One of loveliest arias ever!

  • lovely voice

    remus

  • wonderful aria!
