Wow! I did not know Joan died last year. as an Opera singer I heard nothing about it. She was definitely a legend in her own right as well as Maestro Pavarotti. R.I.P to both of them
I've been re listening to many of the legends of that era, Beverly Sills (Anna Bolena), Sutherland in all sorts of stuff, Caballe, Verrett, Price, and of course Pavarotti. And I was lucky enough to see each and every one of them live, many of them multiple times. To think that in those days we though of voices like Martina Arroyo as second string, what wouldn't we give to have a voice of that size and beauty singing today. Yes, yes, yes it was a GOLDEN age.
It just doesn't get any better than this - and Joan outsings any soprano yesterday and today in this role A performance I attended in Fort Worth (2008) that starred Futral and Costello was excellent.
Naughty!...heh, heh...but Sutherland wasn't really fat, she was just a large woman...tall and wide, but not really "fat". Even Pavarotti--for awhile--was just a big man.
Dame Joan's biographer, Norma Major, said that Sir Richard had a lot to do with his wife's costuming, that he'd say, "Make her look like a ship in full sail". Rather fitting for a beautiful voice that would fill an entire concert hall.
Not gonna lie, her fantastic, incredible, irreplaceably massive Joanie chin definitely accounts for 5% of why she's my absolute favourite opera singer of all time, EVER!
You are exactly right. This was part of a special night at the Met in 1987 entitled "An Evening With Sutherland And Pavarotti." It was telecast live on PBS . It consisted of fully staged acts from three operas: Lucia (Act 1), Rigoletto (Act 3), and the final act of Traviata. The Rigoletto is particularly great, featuring an amazing quartet in which Sutherland ends it with a high D (at the age of 60!), and the great Leo Nucci as Rigoletto. The clip is on YouTube.
I find it absurd to see Netrebko & Alagna's names used in the same sentence as Sutherland & Pavarotti. The reason should be obvious and would need to more than a half brain and a modestly working ear!
It seems to me obvious that at that time there were no competition for Pavarotti and Sutherland, nor there is competition today if he count the recordings. Your comment is well stated. Thanks!
To criticise these two legends of the opera stage for acting is laughable, in my opinion. Pavarotti and Sutherland have put on record some of the best, most sensitive duet singing ever. Netrebko & Alagna?? Not even in the same league!
You fool. If I liked Britney and Paris do you really think I;d be watching opera videos on youtube? Moreover I stated that Pav and Suth sound wonderful. I stand by my comments. If the acting component of opera were irrelevant then why bother wearing costumes and performing amongst sets? They don;t even remotely look or act convincing in this video. Pav, however, did do a nice acting job with the light comedy roles he sang.
In general, I agree with you. Opera has two components - singing and acting. But the singing component is much more important than the acting component of the performance. If someone sings excelently, you can forgive him poor acting. If someone sings poorly even the best acting cannot save the performance. Only few opera singers had both components very good. From contemporary singers for example Anna Netrebko.
Everything consists in singing both dramatic nature, and staginess, and, that is required from the OPERA; and it speaks (critic): " only singing " - also does not understand, that this not only the most difficult, but that this all rest includes in itself ".
P.S. Netrebko sings as the second-year student // imho
Sutherland, 61 y/o in this vid, retired 3 years later. Pav 52. For them to be able to sing these parts at their age is nothing short of a miracle. What you said about their appearance was crass & uncalled for. Maybe they look "comical" & shameful to you, but for 2 people that gave so much in their prime, I think they deserve a little slack in their older years. The public clamored for them (even to his dying day.)
acting up to corelli or domingo's standard is fine, but to the standard of today, that's too much acting. the acting is starting to outweigh the singing nowadays.

Keep on removing this comment and I'll keep on posting. :) As previously stated, this looks comical. They sound wonderful, but the acting and general appearance is shameful.
Shameful that they are not young? Or more photogenic? If it really up sets you, you could got and see Johnny Depp and JayLo do Lucia, but I can't imagine it would sound very good.
Nothing superficial about you! Im sure your gorgeous & can sing them under the table. Bet you LOVE Britney & Paris. Who cares if they can sing - they LOOK GOOD! That's all that matters to people like you. Real talent = how fine you are. How pitiful. Send us a photo when your their age and lets see what you look like. And while your at it, post a picture of your mansion & paycheck so we can see how rich & powerful you are. In other words, who cares what you think. AS IF.
If I want to see great acting I'll go to the theatre. She was the greatest soprano of the past 60 years, and acted well enough. Opera is foremost about the music and the voice;no one went to the opera house to see her act! pje
Yes,both getting on in years...but,remember that the great Sutherland is almost 10 years older that pavarotti. She never lost her confidence, such a great technique, great artist....
And we lost Pavarotti today..I was in the chorus in the 1960's when Joan Sutherland and Luciana Pavarotti did this opera. He was young and up and coming.
Please, a little more perspective. Sutherland is 60 here, and, as any singer knows, the first act can be a bit rough since the voice hasn't warmed up yet. If Joan was only 35 or 40 the cloudy tone or wobble in the middle would be alarming, but hardly so at this age. On the contrary, quite expected. A very nice performance considering.
They really belt it out. Complete absence of subtleties and imagination in the phrasing! Pavarotti's voice is still imposing, Sutherland's has become alarmingly pulsating and lost flexibility.
Actually, it's not an aria, but a duet. Sutherland and Pavarotti are older here, but still amazing. I suppose La Stupenda was already about 60 here, am I right? Her voice still sounds very creamy and steady, however, and her technique is superb. Pavarotti is in great voice, too!
Actually, it is Lucia, it´s the second scene of the first act, if I´m not wrong. It´s "Verrano a te sull´aure", a beautiful duet between Lucia and Edgardo.
Grandes binomios se han dejado escuchar; Callas- Distefano, Caballe-Domingo, Kraus-Freni, y la lista seguiría, pero como Sutherland-Pavarotti no hay igual...
