I was born in '64, and I honestly recall seeing this from a playpen in my parent's living room. I always wanted to be on that plane! I also loved this man's voice.
So great to see this again--I'm 60 and I remember it like yesterday. My dad was a pilot in WWII and it always made/makes me think of him. He loved to fly. Thank you so much for finding it!
As a retired USAF aviator, I too have always been taken by this wonderful rendition. After some extensive research, I found that the voice over was indeed, William Conrad. He is known for his acting in the TV series Jake and The Fat man and Cannon. This fact was confirmed by the great grand nephew of RAF pilot Magee who wrote the poem at age 19, just weeks before being killed in his Spitfire.
I dont know why this touched me as a child, looking at it now and reflecting back, I think it mad me feel safe, safe amid a lot of bad things and people. After listening to as the tv was signing off, i would fall into a restful, peaceful sleep.
Absolutely love this poem and it is one of the things that touched me as a child. I have never forgotten it and this is the first time I have seen this in over 40 years!!! Thank you so much for posting this and taking us back to the good old days!!!
I'm a 60yo female. Remember this from when I was a teenager in the 60s. KDKA in Pittsburgh used to sign off with this every night, but I only got to see it Fri & Sat nights (in bed by 9 for school other nights.) It played a big part in my fascination with flying, Nearly 30 years later I finally got my small craft pilots license. Have logged over 600 hours. Thanks for the fond memories & inspiration.
@planetxmagazine exactly, i was born in 1998, only got to see this on the internet. quite honestly,i wish people would respect nostalgia a bit better.
@planetxmagazine you got that right brother!! love to just stay up long enough to see this clip before t.v. stations signed off for the day, thoses were the days!!!.
For this aviator, this video was a snap shot back in time to where it began only as a school boy's dream in the deserts of southern New Mexico, through the enlisted ranks of the AF, on to the USAFA, B-52s, T-38s and now the left seat of Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft for a pretty cool airline. What an amazing journey! This short film had a major hand in its origins...Thanks so much...you know who!
Was used by KWTX TV 10 in Waco, TX for many years. The CEO of the station was a pilot. I worked at signoff many times in the late 60s when this was on a 16mm film
Thank you for posting this. I love the poem, this short film version and the music under the poem voice-over. Can anybody tell me anything about this video and especially the music on it?
As a product of the '50s, and I remember the F104 Starfighter, I remember this as the sign off of channel 10 Phoenix AZ. It always touched me then, and still does.
My old man used to run the most magnificent scam on me. I would try and stay up for New`s Years Eve. He would wait until my eyes were closed for sixty seconds. Then, turn the channel to a spot on the dial with no station, only "snow". Then he`d jog me awake and say, "It`s 3am Everything`s ff the air. Worked every time!!!
awesome!!! I would be at my grandparents in Eufala, AL in the early 70's and watch the TV station sign of with this video - what a memory - and it inspired me to do what ever I could to fly a fighter jet and I finally got to in 2008, nearly 40 years after seeing High Flight
I am enchanted, I am 7 years old again...I'm not religious in the traditional sense but when I see this, I feel like I am....Thank you Thank you.....It was such a distant memory.
Awesome! I have always loved this poem, and remember it well as a youngster. What an impression it made! Our country sure has changed a lot in 40 years.
THANK YOU for posting this!!! I have the version that Reubenhubert possibly recalls posted on my channel, followed by the "Bluebird of Happiness" film that so many people saw as a sign-off throughout the United States.. but it is your version of "High Flight" that I probably first saw, and I can especially recall that music. Great big thank you, PlanetX!!
I've been there and done that in a T-38 and believe that this is the best narration of High Flight. . I hope I can find a high quality color version of this. Please let me know if you know where I can find it.
I remember this as a kid too....I'd sure like to know....**What year** was this film made? Anybody?

@ASG15IAG John Gillespie Magee actually flew for No. 412 (Fighter) Squadron RCAF out of RAF Digby, Lincolnshire.

I have 1300 hours flying airplanes, and this was my first inspiration watching this when Eufala, AL TV stations signed off

Thanks buddy! It took me years to find a 16mm film print of this. While I always loved watching this as a kid, I guess it had a bigger effect on you.
Since the major stations don't sign off anymore, today's generation doesn't get to experience little gems like this.

I believe the voiceover is noneother than Effrim Zimbalest Jr.

I remember a different version. It was in color.
I love this poem.

I remember the color variation as well. The only other difference was the arrangement of the song featured here, of course. Excellent find, guys.
