They didnt completely give it up, just trying to vary it up a little, and elaborate guitar solos arnt a real major thing they've incorporate into thier music. Theres maybe only a handful of songs like Ruiner. But yeah i agree the sound of the year zero album wasnt the greatest but i think they made up for it with Ghosts I-IV.

In this song, a guitar solo would be out of place anyway, because it would stand out too much. The synth 'solo' really suits the song I think. For some reason I really like it, even though It's really chaotic and random.

I believe the reason for the more chaotic and random sound of Year Zero is because there is a lot of statements about how our world is becoming. There are a lot of political statements in Year Zero.
