Hank is totally right about naming pets anything. I have a dog named Spaz (she really lives up to her name), and a cat named Ninja. Seriously, name your pets anything, they don't care, especially if they're being laughed at.
First: I totally agree with you on the dogs with people names thing. My name is Molly and often when I introduce myself to people they say, "Oh! My grandmother's dog's name is Molly!" I hate that. It happens to my friend Maggie all the time too...
Second: My birthday is May 3rd as well! (And so is my mom's :])
lol I think completely differently with pet names. I have a dog named Molly and am adopting a cat I'm naming Jack.
It all depends though. Once I have the resources and ability to get a dog I want a corgi and I'll probably name him Pippin which isn't a "people" name at all.
I do get enjoyment from naming animals with people names that aren't in full use anymore like Muriel, Melvin, or Amos. That's just me...
We have three cats: Montana, Stewie, and Luna. We usually call Montana "Chunk" because he's so fat. Stewie usually goes by Boobie or Boobert (Stewart>Boobert>Boobie). Luna usually goes by Crack Kitty, Crackhead, Crackles, Amy Winehouse, or Loonie -- because she is insane.
My dog is called Reva and I don't know any people with that name and I doubt that I will in the future so i guess that that is fine... Now i'm going to stop procrastinating and clean my livingroom!
I totally agree with the people/dog name difference! We have a Smuckers, a Marzipan, and an Elphie; the people I worked for had a Kate. Do you know how awkward it is to yell "KAAAAAATE!! COME BACK IN SIDE NOW OR I'M GONNA ZAP YOU WITH YOUR COLLAR!!" off the back porch?
Hey, Hank, you know what my fat, elderly yellow lab is named? Take a wild guess, haha. Sorry, had him long before vlogbrothers started up, so, it wasn't on purpose XD
@MischiefManaged01 Actually, Zelda IS a human name :) Zelda the princess's name was inspired by Zelda Fitzgerald, the wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Its not super common now, but it is a human being's name thats been around awhile.
I just need to say that my parents have a dog named Samuel, which they call Sam. My sister recently had a baby, and she named him Samuel, calling him Sam. It's very confusing when the baby is in the house with the dog.
My dog is called Quincy. He was named by the RSPCA, part of an abandoned littler of seven who all received Q names. For every abandoned litter they named they used a different letter of the alphabet. So the poor woman had to think of seven Q names. I knew them at the time we chose our dog but I can't recall them now.
Except Quidditch, who I will always remember for reasons unrelated to the dog who received that name.
All three of my dogs are from the Humane Society... so we didn't pick their names. Blackie, Trudy, and Newt. Trudy and Newt are human names but.... Blackie. not so much.
I feel the exact opposite Hank! D: I feel that a lot of goofy names devalue pets and knowing a pet with the same name as you shouldn't be an insult or a waste.
I believe in astrology. Not the lame newspaper/magazine blurbs about how my day is going to be, but I think there is something to the time of year you are born.
I think it can be fun to have animals named like people, though I definitely see where you're coming from and it would suck to be named the same as someone's pet. In fact, when I was little my older cousins had a cat named the same as me. She hated me, and I still remember the one night I had to stay at their place and she glared at me from under the coffee table across the room. I was never so scared in my life. I think she didn't like sharing her name, either.
My name is Sophie and one of my classmates has a cat name Sophie too (but I didn't know this at the time) and this one time I heard her saying to her friends "yeah Sophie has really put on a lot of weight this year" and it was one of the most horrible thing that has ever happened to me...
i personally don't believe in astrology, but at 0:36 you started to make me think whether or not it could have an effect on you. I wouldn't be suprised if the season you were born into effected you in someway. you know like the whole higher suicide rates in winter due to lack of sun sort if thing... maybe i'm just rambling.
I have 2 cats, one is called spice (my sister named her) which is a fairly standard name, the other is called No-name, mainly because I couldn't come up with a name and it kinda stuck.
I have 2 cats... One is a fat orange tabby named Twinkie (yeah he kinda lived up to his name, but he's adorable), and the other is a Sealpoint Siamese named Jasper (yes, from the twilight saga). Both are incredibly adorable and have become family.
My mom has a dog that's a Whippet/Lab mix named Nikita. She's the friendliest thing!
Yeah, I love my pets. They all became part of the family. My mom even calls Nikita my four footed sister, because she's family.
There are some names that work: namely, those names that should never ever be given to humans. My grandmother was named Beulah. She always said it was a great name for a cow, but we were never ever to name a human child after her.
My cats have been Grizelda, Tansy, Quep and Cracker.
Grizelda because she was black, and it's a witches name; Cracker because she was born on Christmas eve; Tansy because it's apparently a herb, and my mum has a thing about calling cats herby names. Don't even ask about the name Quep.
But the names Gary, Robbie and Lola are out for kid's names, thanks to dogs and a hamster.
hank a woman in america wanted to bury her dead, the counsil had no problem with this except of the tombstone because the woman called her dog " ShitHead"
Actually it's proven that people born in the earlier part of the school year (september- december) are actually smarter in later life. Because the people of the same age are put into the same class but a child of 4 years and one month is much less advanced than a child of 4 years and eight months. They get ahead and this last throughout life.
I'm not sure if I believe in astrology as such, but it quite fun when it is true. I'm more for the personality stuff than the future stuff. I mean, I've never met a Libran that could make a decision easily. But idk.
My old dog was named Emma (after the Jane Austen novel because the breeder had some rule about literary names). I had a classmate named Emma. I was in third grade and my mom came to pick me up with the dog and she got excited and peed everywhere so my friend shouted "oh, ew, Emma just peed everywhere". My classmate Emmas was also around and this was a lot funnier when I was eight.
I see nothing wrong with giving them "People" names. Why should there be a class between the two? Clearly people love heir dog - like family I would assume - so one would give them a name befitting to them. I find names like "Buttons" cute, but in the end insulting to a dogs intelligence. Name a hamster Buttons. And as far as naming dogs non-human names, humans have a habit of naming their kids pretty outlandish names, like "Pillow" or "America" sometimes even "ESPN"
everyone calls their dogs Molly, which is my name. It's awkward. I mean, my dog is called Sid, but it's okay because we don't know anyone at all called Sid. And he doesn't answer to it anyway.
We have a dog named Charlie who pees on the floor whenever company comes over because he gets ridiculously excited. Well, one time my sister's friend Charlie came over and got my dog really excited. So I called into the kitchen, "Mom, Charlie peed on the floor. Can you get me some paper towels?" She comes out and scolds the dog. Meanwhile human Charlie sulks away and says "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to do it."
Every dog that we've ever had has had a people name. This is mostly because my mum calls them 'kids' when we're in public. And in our house it's common that you'll get called by a dog's name before you get addressed with your own name. However, except for Katie, they all have uncommon people names.
My name is Maggie and I have met substantially more dogs named Maggie than other people :/ That said, my dog's name is Phinneas which is a people name...although not a common one.
I don't really have an issue with people/dog names, everyone I know that has a pet has called it what would be classified as a 'human' name and I just think it's cool :D
I don't think there are 'dog names' and 'people names', call your pets whatever the hell you want, whether that's Stormageddon or Brian :)
My dog's called Toby which I think is a nice name for dogs or humans. I don't think it's a 'dog name' and it wouldn't be weird if someone called their kid that, because I like it.
Dog don't suit people names... cats on the other hand are perfect for really common people names. I mean, c'mon, who wouldn't want a cat called Allan?
My dog was named Poppy. Several years after she died, my first girlfriend's name was Poppy. There was lots of confusion when talking about the dog. "Yeah, Poppy used to crap all over the floor." was never a dog sentence in the presence of your girlfriend.
Fwiw, Mr. Green? Since you were trained as a scientist, you're allowed to point out that as a predictor of personality or future actions, astrology fails. People are free to believe whatever they like (I believe God exists, for instance) but as a proponent of the scientific method, you aren't rude to mention the fail.
I think you should call her Stormageddon Dark Empress of all... Or maybe StormaDE :P either way don't feed her grapes, coz they're tummies explode. Which is ironic as my dog basically lives off of grapes and has done so for three years of the four years I've had him. His names Seamus and he's a border collie spaniel cross and slightly ginger
Also, I think you should have left the astrology bit in. I'm pretty sure you've said lots of things that could offend people before, and that was pretty mild.
I don't know, I think Puck is an awesome human name. In fact, I'm suddenly really wishing I had thought of it. Probably couldn't have talked the wife into it though. But maybe. For those who don't know, Puck is a character in Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream who has the famous speech beginning: "If we shadows have offended,
In general I think it's better to name a pet with a human name that isn't particularly common in the place you're from than to give a pet some cringe-worthy name like fluffykins; however, if it's between a somewhat common human name and a nice non-human name (take Lemon for example), then I'd go with the non-human name.
I think that animals can have people names and they are often a lot better than animal names... Animal names are usually not as funny as they were ment to be. For example my dog's name's Fanni (I'm Finnish) and Fanni/Fanny is a normal person name in Finland.
I kinda agree with not giving a pet a human name, but then again the names I like for pets are literary characters, for example I named my kitten Albus :) The other choices were Remus, Sirius and Mr Darcy :P
I think human names can be fine, it's better off if no one has the same name in the family though, to avoid confusion hahaha.
People names are ok in a comic context- Thelma and Louise for example, or Holly and Ivy. Having just a random person name's kinda awkward though... if I get dogs, I'm gonna call them Starsky and Hutch- comic double act names, but not really people names. Best of both worlds!
I named my cats after video game characters x'D our current cat has a human name, albeit a very rare (and comical) one *_* my friend has a parrot that's named a human name (Jacob or in Arabic it's يعقوب) , and whenever she says: oh Jacob's out of the cage again, I'm like: why do you have a family member in a cage?
To an extent I agree animals shoudn't have people names, but sometimes there is just a good reason to give them a people name (my mom doesn't agree and all her pets have people names...a baby was then was quickly named the same thing as our dog...it was awkward.) I have a cat....who's name is CALVIN!! Why did you pick Calvin? But he use to have a cat buddy named Hobbes, it is a very long story....but it fit perfectly, and then I think it is okay to give people names.
I really agree with you on the 'dogs shouldn't have people names' thing. I have a LOT of animals, with some pretty awesome names. My dog is also named after food. Angelcake. :P The only animal with a name thats partialy a people name is my bulky black cat, Emile, which I took from the name Emilio.
my first dog was Jerry and the second one Tommy (we added the -my at the end because its easier for dogs to learn names ending with an 'e' sound) they're people names but i dont really have a problem with that...
We have a cat named Wicki Woodle Whiteley. His first name is the nickname of a dear friend who passed away this August, his middle name just sounded cute, and his surname is of course his family name. He is, to all intents and purposes, our son (see the 2nd birthday party we threw for him on my YouTube channel) but when we have children, I would like to name our human son after Hank and/or John.
@tinabeaner004 yeeeees! my aunt wanted to name my cousin toby and i told her no that's a dog's name *headdesk* in my defence i was 6 and from a non-english speaking country ;_;
If I ever get a dog, I've already decided that for a boy, I'd have to call him (in descending order of preferrence) Remus, Sirius, Moony, Snuffles, Padfoot or possibly Lupin. However, I'm not oppesed to calling my son Remus or Sirius. Whichever comes first could get one of those names, but I hope it's the dog because I could never have a dog with one of those names and a son with another of them.
It's ok. My first dog's name was named Toto (no, not bcz of Wizard of Oz, my mum named it) and my rabbit was named "Money" (my mum liked the idea of going "Come Money, come here") and my dog now is called "Mantoe" which is a kind of food in Chinese =)
YES! Now I know The Green dad and Lemon has the same birthday as me. *awh yeah* (I actually know 4 people personally, who have the same birth date as me...)
All of the pets I have ever had have had people names, animals are people too & i feel like it is incredibly degrading to name them after inanimate objects as if they aren't as important. I mean I love my pets a great deal more than the majority of people who live on this planet so why should I care if naming my puppy Joshua offends anyone else with that name as I have never known a Josh that I am close to?? Still love you Hank ;)
Lol I'm a taurus too. And I have learned men that believe in astrology signs are bat sh*t crazy. So yeah.. Good on you Hank. : J No offense made. And not to be sexist women who belive in it are mental as well...i mean.. I totally love you all..and believe what you want..no matter how insa...different it is. : D
naming a pet after things within arms reach you say? Then my next pet's name shall be laptop, wardrobe or desk chair (yes these are all within arms reach, I have a small room)
I called my dog Gizmo, because when he was a puppy he had ear the stuck out. Don't worry he lived up to his name! We can't even leave he home alone because we are scared of what we would find when we get home.
About the human name thing: that doesn't really matter! As soon as you know a human who has a certain name, which you originally intended to be your son/daughter's name, you probably choose another name too. (I personally love the name Morgan, but I have a friend who's name is Morgan, so no way am I going to name my daughter that!)
My pets names since birth have been. Sheena, K.C.(Kid companion), Max, Zoey, Penny, Jetta, Topaz, Sunshine, Opey, Snowshoe, Lily, Charlotte and Delilah.
Ten of these names are people names....Yeah. I didn't pick them.
I've got two dogs: Knox and Noodles. I completely agree with the whole keep human names for humans .
I used to be called 'JD' purely because my name pretty much sounds like that anyway and it's just easier but then my friend bought a cat and named it 'JD' after 'Jack Daniels' and it's super annoying when they say 'JD is getting fat' or 'JD did ____' and I always think for a second they're talking about me
i was born may 3rd 1984! yay

I don't really have an issue with people/dog names, everyone I know that has a pet has called it what would be classified as a 'human' name and I just think it's cool :D
TheGiggles1963 2 months ago
I don't think there are 'dog names' and 'people names', call your pets whatever the hell you want, whether that's Stormageddon or Brian :)
My dog's called Toby which I think is a nice name for dogs or humans. I don't think it's a 'dog name' and it wouldn't be weird if someone called their kid that, because I like it.

Yup, my mom named the cat Bridget, so they couldn't name me Bridget... I would have MUCH preferred it over Molly. No offense, other Molly's.

But maybe. For those who don't know, Puck is a character in Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream who has the famous speech beginning: "If we shadows have offended,
Think but this and all is mended,
That you have but slumber'd here
While these visions did appear."

For example my dog's name's Fanni (I'm Finnish) and Fanni/Fanny is a normal person name in Finland.
thewhaaam 2 months ago
I kinda agree with not giving a pet a human name, but then again the names I like for pets are literary characters, for example I named my kitten Albus :) The other choices were Remus, Sirius and Mr Darcy :P
I think human names can be fine, it's better off if no one has the same name in the family though, to avoid confusion hahaha.
Falloutrockchick 2 months ago
People names are ok in a comic context- Thelma and Louise for example, or Holly and Ivy. Having just a random person name's kinda awkward though... if I get dogs, I'm gonna call them Starsky and Hutch- comic double act names, but not really people names. Best of both worlds!

I named my cats after video game characters x'D our current cat has a human name, albeit a very rare (and comical) one *_* my friend has a parrot that's named a human name (Jacob or in Arabic it's يعقوب) , and whenever she says: oh Jacob's out of the cage again, I'm like: why do you have a family member in a cage?
renoa0heartilly 2 months ago
To an extent I agree animals shoudn't have people names, but sometimes there is just a good reason to give them a people name (my mom doesn't agree and all her pets have people names...a baby was then was quickly named the same thing as our dog...it was awkward.) I have a cat....who's name is CALVIN!! Why did you pick Calvin? But he use to have a cat buddy named Hobbes, it is a very long story....but it fit perfectly, and then I think it is okay to give people names.

About the human name thing: that doesn't really matter! As soon as you know a human who has a certain name, which you originally intended to be your son/daughter's name, you probably choose another name too. (I personally love the name Morgan, but I have a friend who's name is Morgan, so no way am I going to name my daughter that!)

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend.
Friend: My family just got a new cow, and we are trying to decide what to name it.
Me: ooo can you pretty please name it after me, that would be so cool to have a cow named after me!
Friend: I would, but my mom doesn't want to give it a person name. She is thinking about naming in Violet.
Me: That's my niece's name.
Friend: Oh.......*awkward silence*

I agree that it was a bit of a digression, but I thought it fit with the general tone of the whole video well enough.
