  • The Wealth Spectrum (Roger Hamilton) is bringing up something similar. That is: how people view the world differently due to being on different levels of understanding (what you might call "error in communication"). I find David Logan credible enough to consider following further on the subject of tribe communication. Great video.

  • @skewb40 Don´t worry anyway, mate... and get shaved ;)

  • @deadshot666 I guess even a deadshot can't hit a point.

  • Success for Managers means: I want to be in healthy relationships. I want a real connection with people I spend so much time with.

  • tribe? in a multi-racial wasteland?

    fucking idiot

  • Check out spiral dynamics, Don Beck, Susan Cook-Greuter's theory of ego development Other Personality Typologies, Ken Wilber. Consciousness develops through stages with the subject of one stage becoming the object of the subject of the next stage.

  • thanks powerful insight

  • I'm finding this pretty hard to sit through . . . It all sounds completely ridiculous to me . . . not to mention pointless . . . such motivational speakers always remind me of Harold Hill, the con man in The Music Man . . . except he was likable . . . What is he talking about? He's lost me . . . something about tribes . . . He's pretty boring . . . "Triadic"?!?? That's a word? . . . If I had to attend such a lecture through my work I'd vomit.

  • Read the book "Tribal Leadership". I fleshes out these concepts. This guy is right on.

  • buddha said that life is suffering and sucks....but also apreciate it...kinda

  • this reminds me a lot of the "I'm okay-you're okay" idea

  • I think this is flawed and badly defined. He poorly shoehorns things to fix his point.

  • @Trueskorn i completely agree... it's not very well explained, and it seems he just arbitrarily made those 5 stages without any elaboration.

  • @Trueskorn Read the book "Tribal Leadership". It will flesh the concepts out better for you. This guy is right on.

  • When he said Zappos' company policy said "be a little bit weird" I clapped my hands IRL. That is too awesome.

  • this is still very powerful many months after seeing it for the first time

  • I had to study this theory in college. I think its crap. Because I hate my job, I am like the Virginia Tech shooter? If that was the case, this nation would be full of mass murders every day. His theory bears a passing resemblance to high school clique hierarchy (popular kids vs burnouts) if anything, but I believe most workplaces are not monolithic and workers not homogenous enough to fall into his easy categorizations.

  • @RCharan821 Hating your job makes you like the people at Dave's DMV. ;)

  • @RCharan821 Not just your job... you have to legitimately hate your life. doesn't sound like got in through even two visits to this theory, maybe if you study it a third time...

  • life changing

  • Is it Dave or David Logan ? the book cover says Dave but this video says David same with his TED Profile

  • Interesting idea. Slightly confusing presentation - it was hard to tell where he was going at certain times, because he just hopped from idea to idea. I still love this, though.

  • This is a beautiful talk.

  • i am stage 3 i always want to be better then everyone else (working on tribe 4)

  • completely true! Sociology at work!

  • Pogotribe! this was awesome. i'm so inspired

  • Stage 1 2%

    Stage 2 25%

    Stage 3 48%

    Stage 4 22%

    Stage 5 2%

    = 99%

    lol

  • @Whymetakehim Maybe he didn't tell us about the secret stage. the last 1% hahaha.

  • @Whymetakehim Those are all estimations. Think of it like 2.2%, 25.2%, 48.2%, 22.2%, and 2.2%.

  • @DougAndHarvey Even an estimation should result in 100%.

  • Im stage 3 but im working on stage 4 and have always wanted stage 5 for the world :)

  • I don't think I really fit in any of these, xD!! Sure my life isn't the greatest, but it certainly doesn't suck...nor do I think I'm better than anyone (my life is neither great nor does it suck. It just...is, lol!). I guess I fit more in tribe four since it's great to be fun and creative and stuff...but I'm kinda shy to do anything with groups of people. I suppose I just see my life as trying to make it in the world, I love my life though, and I'm not going to crap on anyone else's!

  • Im a stage 3 when around stupid people and a 5 when around clever people

  • tribe 2.5

  • I think stage 3 is sort of like pride in yourself and your tribe.

    Go pogotribe!

    Guess I'm stage 3.

  • I would like more specific instructions than this. Has he written essays on the subject and can I find them online?

  • Goddamnit I'm so stage 3, and this isn't even the first time I've watched this, but this time i really am going to change.

First step: Stop trolling on youtube

  • everyone in the world should see this video

  • What about "I suck You're Better"

  • that's "my life sucks"

  • level 2

  • The simple but perhaps enormously important concept at the center of this talk is that culture and consciousness evolve - in this case as described by his 5-stage model. Therein lies great promise of civilization. People, and groups of people (societies) can and do grow and change and evolve through sometime very predictable stages. When we understand this developmental model, it is far easier to provide healthy constructive means for cultures to evolve. This is what is especially important here

  • says, "he's talking about something meaningful. i'm so motivated in life."

  • 'fml' is stage 2.

  • I fell alsleep twice during this. Dan Brown explained it better!

  • changed my life.

  • thanks so much for the talk, that push me a little

  • Don't acknowledge yohank2004, he's a troll.

  • i personally am stage 1 or 2. but i'm in a stage 4 tribe

  • I personally try to stay optimistic towards other people, and stay on a level 4. Though all the kids that I have to "deal" with (thinking on a 3rd level) are so incompetent and immature. Any other middle schoolers/high schoolers agree with me?

  • I am Stage 4

  • wow man

  • amazing.

  • yes, but the prejudice isn't bad or anything. It is very true and opens a lot of eyes.

  • WOW, going to spread this video EVERYWHERE

  • Probaly the best thing iv ever seen, sept from the fact you numbered the tribes, dont put a number on you're tribes ;P

  • that's a really stage 3 comment if you think about it.

  • he needs to talk to max brooks

  • Pogotribe FTW

  • @Artimis314159 Yes! Represent! :)

  • @Artimis314159 thats stage 4 buddy. think 5

  • wow, this blew my mind!

    really gets you thinking...

  • how so

  • Thats just as i was thinking. This is very understandable logic and it makes sense, but the catagorizing of people is just another form of prejudice.

  • @yohank2004, which group did you fall in? I can assure you you're not stage 5.

  • Nobody cares about your negativity. Either say something constructive or don't say anything at all. If you don't believe in it, give valid reasons why with evidence to back-up your arguments. Otherwise, people are going to assume you're an egotistical narcissist and will pay about as much attention to you as they do to every other pessimist out there. I feel sorry for you.

  • Than why even comment?

  • you don't think you're told what to think? your told that you need to make money. you're told that you need to have material things. your told that you have to act certain ways in certain situations. and you know what. i'm sure you listen to. don't think you're so special

  • lol you are not happy, you are ignorant. a truly happy person would not feel the need to bash a superb mind such as david logan just so you could feel better about yourself and feel superior because of your beliefs. you dont know what true happiness is because you refuse to acknowledge the potential for more than self-centered materialism. so the jokes on you, buddy.

  • I think that TASTE has a lot to do with how we relate to each other. Being willing to step out of your comfort zone also helps expand our taste profile and having a vision of why it is better to communicate and understand others helps drive true leadership

  • DONT PUT A NUMBER ON YOUR TRIBES

  • Don't think of yourself as an ugly human...think of yourself as a handsome monkey.

  • ma mama has been tellin me that since the daay aaa was baawn!

  • @buddhistpunk2211 Ha ha ha good one!

  • @buddhistpunk2211 haha your comment was priceless! thumbs up

  • well said

  • @buddhistpunk2211 were apes

  • @buddhistpunk2211 What if you're often referred to as an ulgy monkey a lot, like me?

  • i think i am in level 3 i used to have been in level 2 for a while untill i realized that some others were just trying to level you down, when i realized it i ignored it and came to level 3 and i hope to reach level 4 and maybe even level 5, i think reaching level 5 is very hard cause some people can see you as an enemy and try to get you down. Thanks for uploading this, it clears some things up ad i recognize alot of it

  • it's competition that motivates us to get better (then the other) the other at his turns tries to be beter then you and so on so you (may) and up better then you would without this competative motivation and he shelf is a level 3 because he looks down at level 1&2

  • Nationalism is glorified tribalism.

  • What if you think everyone is great but yourself?

  • thts sort of stage 2

  • @Speelunking If you think everyone is great but yourself then you stop being a number and move on to the alphabet in tribal stages..... =)

  • Personally a person or tribe's stage is not described by what they are now or by one person. As Dr. Logan (I assume he has a PhD) said the stage is more of a collective thought. Also a stage should or would be described by the average, on average how do they/ you think. Just like economics, there are times of negative and positive progress, the net gain is the final answer. The theory is obviously still young but like EVERYTHING it will change accordingly.

  • What I don't really understand, if we were all on stage 5, there would be no competition at all, if I'm correct. And competition is great, I like to compete with other players. Without competition life would be boring I guess. But please, correct me if I'm wrong.

  • competition is important, but you are not at the same stage in every situation. for example, if you play against another team, you are on stage 4 with your own tribe. however, when you practice on your own, you are probably at stage 3, trying to improve yourself and become better. stage 5 is the ideal condition but we dont have to be in it constantly.

  • Thanks for the explanation!

  • @Woodlediedoo There are two forces that motivate people....the need to avoid pain and the need to gain pleasure. The lower stages of this model are more focused more on avoiding pain. Motivation is achieved by escaping and moving away from pain. However, at stage 5 the view is that life is great. If life is great as it is, there is nothing really to escape or avoid. Therefore, the motivation becomes more about how to gain pleasure...not because you fear pain, but just for the joy of it.

  • at stage 4 were great. my thinking is that if we're great then life is great. so im having a hard time segregating stage 4 and 5.

  • Stage 4 is "we're great" and also "they suck." You see this in sports rivalries. Stage 5 expands the "we" to include everyone. Envision a circle that you call "I" or "We." The bigger (including more people) you are willing to draw the circle, the closer you get to stage 5. Stage 5 examples are Gandhi and Jesus. Stage 4 tribes want their tribe to win. Stage 5 tribes want everyone to win.

  • Actually, according to the math of possibilitys it's only a question og WHEN it's gonna happen. Everything wil happen sooner or later, it might take a hundred years and it might take five billion years but it's actually very likley that it wil happen.:) P.S sorry for my poor english...:)

  • So that's where the phrase "Hey yo! Level with me?" Came from.. Tribal recruitment. :-D

  • very interesting video id love to be level 5

  • good video i think im level 2

  • anyone else a level 1? like me??

  • that is a strong statement, but probably true

  • I agree because without the negative people who can the positive people reflect upon to show them they are positive? It makes sense to me.I could be wrong.

  • I wouldn't say the Chance is 0% more 1-2%

Maybe not in our current state of Technology will that be 100% but as Technology increases so too does the chances of increasing lower levels to 5.

  • With that attitude your right. But if people set their mind to it, a level 5 is in reach.

  • And its people like you that are making it harder...

  • accepting reality does not mean being a pessimist. you can still have optimism in that the world could improve and strive to reach stage 5.

i assume all religions would cooperate if world destruction is imminent (ie. meteor heading for earth, alien invasion lol etc) because if we dont we all die...

  • based on this video, we can end the "stage 1" because knowing what to do (make those stagers 1 think its not LIFE that sux, it's only their lifes) we can make it better, faster and easier. lets reach stage 5 guys!

  • This is really great, i don't want to rate myself, because that would mean i'm a level 3, but i could see masses doing this.

  • that was really interesting, but i would actually want to know how much research they've made to come to these results, and if there have asked all 5 types of people to come to these results

  • i was trying to figure out what tribe i was in and found i wasnt in one, i was between level 3 and 4 because i have a good and i know other people have a good life, but people in rural africa and third world countries, there life sucks i mean they have to walk miles to get simple necesitys like water. so truthfully there are people who's life sucks but we need to accept that and change tat before any one should even be a level 4

  • I disagree whole heartedly friend, for i feel a level 5 tribe is exactly the thing me and my closest friends are together. however, i do agree that this leaves little room for someone being part of multiple tribes, which i am very much a part of. i like to think of it as on an individual basis, there may be a level 5, a level 4, and a level 1 in one tribe, making it a about a 3. I myself, think life is awesome, and people should get on things bandwagon of awesomeness and love life as much as i.

  • what you just said is a level 3

  • I think there's too many variables conflicting with this theory. It's a great idea, don't get me wrong, but a sudden death of a close loved one or another tragedy can drag you back down to this supposed "level 2". You don't bounce back from that easily and you're not the same. Level 5 is an irreachable thing, in my mind.

  • Respectfully, I think level 5 is a reachable thing, and, it sounds corny but, YOU JUST GOTTA BELIIEEEEVE!!

  • i agree with, and yet i don't. for example, the zapos company. within the company, they are a level 4, however zapos has rivals, making them level 3. you cant clasify each person by one level. i think there are various levels within every level.

  • @kamrynluvsmetallica

    and

    @LividImp

thats the idea! people do not understand the motivation of people from lower and upper levels! As me being on level from 3 to 5, i do not understand people's motivation from level 1 ! Something has to happend to NOTTICE and UNDERSTAND upper level and then find the motivation to "grow up".

  • thanks dan brown!

i love this video and it got me thinkin about this kind of stuff

whoever made this tanks fr uploading it

  • I don't know if I buy this. Isn't creating a system of levels of people itself a form of so-called "level 3" tribe behavior? I'm level 5 and they are only level 1, so I'm better than them.

And of course everyone on YouTube talking about this, is patting themselves on the back and announcing how "level 4" they are. It all sounds like one big ego stroke to me.

  • well, if u r level 5, then u think life is great, and also that everyone else is great too.

if people say they r level 4, and bragging, they probably rn't, because they think they r better than others.

  • Sorry, but "level 5" sounds like new-age bullshit; utterly out of tune with how the real world works.

Not to mention, it is implicit that the lower level people will not understand the motivations of the higher level people. Therefore, Logan is announcing his "level 5" status.

I am not against the classification of people, but all this has the underpinnings of a new-age religion. If I had not known better, I might have thought I tuned into the Scientology channel.

  • true, lower level people wont understand and probably wont care. i wonder how (if this were to go into effect) this wud work. yes u do hav a point there.

  • Eventually, religion and culture will get in the way of getting tribes to all work at stages 4 and 5.

  • "How can be people be so dumb and yet live?"

  • 4- we're great you're not, the same thing thought Macintosh team about apple2 team,

  • my question is: what happens when you extend your influence in this triadic relationship so far that the tribe becomes too big? do you get Rome? or do you get peace? maybe it's not so black and white, but I will take anyone's input.

  • I think it's typically an organic process. One can only maintain so many relationships. So I suppose a tribal leader would maintain perhaps 20-50 relationships with other tribal leaders, but through this network, he may have friend of a friend access to up to 2500 tribal leaders, which could amount to 250k-500k regular tribe members? That represents having an influence on a small city. I imagine this can be extended further under certain circumstances. So is that too big? Depends on the tribes.

  • im very willing to chat

  • chat then

  • okay.....btw, i saw your picture on your channel! SWEET!

  • 4- "we're great, they're not"

  • sounds like nazism...

does it sound it to u ppl?

  • I believe that nerdfighters have the ability to become a massive conglomeration of mutually beneficial level 5 tribes. However, the average nerd in isolation lives at level 2, and the world until has conspired to keep this as status quo. However, the internet frees us to realise that we are capable of awesome. And so it is that quickly nerds can join a level 4 tribe such as nerdfighters. Let us all nudge it up a level.

  • I find this all quite strange.

  • Amazing study and presentation.

  • I really enjoyed this entire presentation. It gives me reason to change myself and help others.

  • Im like a 2... This tribe thing is kind of confusing

  • Interesting way to show how humanity acts and evolves...

  • i think I personally range anywhere between stage 1 and 4

  • I think personally, I'm at about a stage 3.5 to 4.

  • I dont realy get what seperates a four from a five.

  • It's just a step up from "We are great" to "Life is great."

  • and thats why your not a five tribe

  • Four is "we are great" as in all the constituents of this tribe are as great as I am and as a group we are great. However, you are - at best - indifferent about other entire groups.

    1 - everyone sucks

    2 - I suck

3 - only I rule everyone else sucks

    4 - my friends and I rule

5 EVERYONE rules, even those not in my group.

  • I'm a 3 I guess... I'm fine with it.

  • Well what I think is this guys levels sounds more like evolution to me. An it doesn't happen that fast. This whole extend my tribe shit is bullshit. You reach out help people learn etc try to nudge them. The problem is they simply don't want the help and don't think on a grand scale so you're wasting your time. That's not negative that's just being realistic.

  • @x900lbGorillax Realistic is not opposite to negative. These aren't mutually exclusive concepts. You're being realistic when you acknowledge there are people you're not reaching out because they simply cant/wont take your help. And you're being negative when you think there's nothing you can do about it. On the other hand, you could also be realistic and positive, if you'd go an extra mile to find out ways to reach out. I think that's what the whole stage 3 vs stage 4 is about actually

  • Well yeah I guess I would have to agree I do sound kinda negative when I think about it like that. But I don't really think there is nothing I can do about it. I just think you'll run into 9/10 times people not wanting any help even. But yeah that makes sense if you go that extra mile an some how gain there trust I am sure they'll listen. I just don't know if humanity care that much since most seem to want just want they want, don't care for others an are happy with very low paying jobs even. =/

  • well like david said, its a step process. so to get people to move from one stage to another, you have to make them think in terms of the tribe above them. so from stage one you have to convince them it's just their life that sucks not life, from stage two you have to get them to take pride in something, from stage three you have to get them in a group of other people who take pride in what they do; for me it was choir. from stage four, you have to get them excited about changing others

  • 9/10? advice; ... actions speak louder than words... because words represent reality, actions are reality. I'm saying, try being the change you want to see in the world and this will change to 1/10. i.e. Don't explain to someone why recycling (or not recycling) is useful, just recycle and be a reasonable, friendly person to people. They will think "what a nice guy, he seems relaxed, like he's got his _ together... if he recycles maybe there is something to recycling I haven't considered?".

  • This was brilliant but he spoke only of gain , like he wants us to reach out and help others which in fact pokes a hole into his logic by telling us he wants us that are of a level 2 3 4 5 hes telling us your better then a level 1 so go help him out which in fact tells us all to belive that we are their for makeing us a level 3 . now on the other hand cant this go negitively as well , like i have a friend right hes very negtive and down on life but he wasent alwise been that way he met a kid

  • that shared similar intrest but this kid was very negtive and he also belives him self to be supirior ( which i suppose make hmm som sort of hybrid between 1 and 3 ) well after about of year my friend has become exactly like this kid . so their was a decrese ?

  • I'd really like to believe my group of best friends are a level 4. There aren't very many of us, but we're united by our ideals and morals and realize that while we're not the best, we're pretty awesome.

  • im 2 and a half. not a 4 yet!!

  • I think I'm jumping stages all the time one minute stage 5 next minute I could be stage 1 o.e

  • woaw this man is amazing.

  • I can see south park doing a parody episode of this...

  • YES

  • THIS IS SO TRUE. Stage 1 to stage 2, putting them in a new tribe. OMG that is PHENOMINAL!

  • im not sure i think im probably a 2... possibly a 4?

Because I do think my life sucks balls quite regularly.. but there are other times where i think everything is great :)

im deffinately not a 3 though.

  • No, I think you and I are in the same situation. Life is getting much much better for me. I'm half-way to 3 I believe.

  • haha, 2 and a half, all the way!! xD

  • Yeah, like I go to places and realize WOW I've been missing out on so much, my life sucks. And my life is now getting gradually better. ie a girlfriend, more social, outgoing, and loving it.

  • awesome video! I think I need a new tribe :D

  • im 2 and 4 my life sucks but im happy with it and its awesome ^^

  • One way of thinking to reach stage four could be thinking of what would help others without thinking of the positivity it brings to you in form of fame, money or even appreciation, making sacrifices for the sake of OTHERS. Or the small step, educate others with the way of thinking that makes them appreciate life itself (which is often required before you even can start thinking of others if you only think about yourself). This is my SMALL way of educating you. What do you do?

  • i like his fashion, he could start a new trend :)

  • hmm i'm probably a 3 or 2 :I

  • Please share this with your tribal members.
