Hello Princess D i am 100% Italian brought up in the North end of Boston Ma. im now 51 years young. and when i was a kid the north end was no different than parts of Italy. everyone spoke Italian and cooked Italian. canned tomatoes NEVER store bought pasta NEVER and yes there were different dialects. but we all called it sauce.the first time i ever heard it called Gravy. was when an Irish guy was making it in Goodfellas . anyway things change mom now 92 uses canned tomatoes& store got pasta
I made your sauce/gravy last night and my family absolutely loved it! I changed up the spices a bit, but other than that I stayed true to the recipe. The meat came out perfectly!! Even the meatballs were great and it was my first time making them. Thank you so much for putting this video on youtube. :)
my father was born in bari, italy and worked in italian restaurants since he came over here! he gets mad when people call it gravy!! thats the american way!!!
.. very sensitive subject so annyoing.. glad i got it off my chest..
That was like watching an episode of The Sopranos! I loved it. I'm British and a big fan of Italian American culture and cuisine thanks to everyone's favourite HBO gangster show.
you guys are all retards....... steve marterano said "it's gravy not sauce" ......he said it cause when you go to his resturant it all gravy. Just a figure of speech and if you never been to marteranos then you dont know at all!!!
@madexplain There's a better way of getting a point across than calling people retards...next time you buy a ticket to Italy pick up some class on the way!
Here in Rhode Island, it's gravy. Always gravy. The big debate here is ground beef and pork vs ground beef, pork, and veal. I love Sunday. I love the food, the company, the homemade wine, the laughter, and the abudonza.
You people are hilarious! I really enjoyed myself... Plus Italian is my absolute favorite cuisine! So I adore the fact that I can watch it being made authentically.
did that guy really think the cops would be on the lookout for his face??? hmmm so funny. but yeah i would say that a sauce is used where no meat involved and a gravy is mainly for meat anyways so it duznt matter really. but love ur channel diana u make me laugh. always precysh-jewyl
I am Italian-Australian and my grandparents are still alive, they migrated here in 1956 along with the other 1 million Italians off the boat that came to Australia between 1951 and 1970, with their children and grandchildren there is nearly 3 million in Australia alone. We all know what you call gravy as Sauce. In Italian it is called Sugo or Ragu (with meat) so whether or not it has meat or no meat in Australia and Italian it is called sauce. Sugo or Napoletano Ragu = direct translation suace.
Oh! LOL! I grew up in the south, so some of your phrases are new to me. I always used the term "meat-sauce." But I guess it's gravy or I'll have to join the mooks, right?! LOL! ;-)
THERE IS NO REAL WORD FOR GRAVY IN ITALIAN!!!!! Sauce is correct (even Louie says it 2:35). AND Sugo De Carne is meat sauce! The problem is that all my Italian AMERICAN kin want to make it seem like they're authentic and most of them can't pronounce anything correctly. I lived in Italy near La'Aquilla for two years. No one over there knows what "mozerell" is. They know Mozzarella (mowtzarela). I could go on and on. Learn the correct pronunciations Asini!
wow you're cranky.... this is the way we speak in NY. Lighten up! Oh and BTW I leave for Italy on Monday. I know behind this crankiness you wish me a great trip :)
@gopsu54 i know exactly how you feel the same thing goes on in south philly kids thinking they are authentic because they call it gravy. I know people who came to america only a few years ago from Italy and they hate when people call it gravy.
Dear GOD!!!! This is enough. I am 100% italian and MY grandmother called it Gravy. You know why???? Becuase it's the closest word they had at the time in the english language.
Don't even start...I should do a video where I walk into Vitamia in Lodi, NJ where I get my Italian specialties. And everyone in there will call it SAUCE! Old school Italians will call it gravy, like my grandma. BUT IT'S SAUCE!
I learn something everytime I watch one of your videos. I never thought about what to call it-gravy goes on mashed "badadas", and sauce goes on spaghetti. But then again, my hair is red, so what do I know about these things?!
Now I understand it's an in house debate. I have always felt insulted the way most Italians belt that at you " it's gravy not sauce". Now I won't take it personal, thank you.
its called sauce down here, and im sure when you go in to a store and buy a jar of SAUCE it say's sauce on the jar, see all the New Yorkers and up north people move down here and like to mess things up. You keep it gravy up there and we will keep it sauce down here lol
Im just playin, I have family that moved here from NY and I always bust on them. My Aunt calls it gravy. The funny thing is I seen a guy 1 day walk in to wawa and he asked for a meetball sub with gravy on it, she says, we do not have any gravy here. I said no he means sauce lol. He looked at me and laughed. I said you must not be from around here he replied nope lol. But for the lady that was working at wawa she should of had a clue what he was talking about with the up north accent.
that looks like a lovely place!! I grew up in NJ and Philly, I have not seen a nice place like thatin a long time!I also say gravy! I'm also italian too!! great video :)
gravy is is made from browining flour in the juices that come from meat when it is roasted you then add water to it to thin it down to the perfect consistancy to pour over the roat meat yorkshire puddings and other vegatables
remember we invented gravy Everything else is sauce you americans sure know how to mess up speaking the queens english
great video I want to go to new york so much those accents are great its like watching the godfather
madone, I loved your video, that was great, Louie is kinda cute too, I make "sauce" myself, you ever make or have Pepper Cookies? I got a GREAT receipe...
be carefull what you ask for i am growing the world record holder for heat and i am growing a recently descovered chilli (as far as growing) from bangladesh and it is predicted 3 times hotter thats nearly as hot as handbag size pepper spray
I always thought gravies were thickened with flour while sauces are thickened with cornstarch..hence the difference? And I'm with your husband, I love German Deli's and Bakeries too!
Diana you are testimony to the fact that there are only two kinds of people on this planet, Italians and those who wish they were! Nothing is more indicative of this then all the Italian eateries from Pizza joints to Pasteria's you can't go anywhere that they don't have Italian Food!
In the south its bisquits and gravy, and spaghetti sauce and meatballs. In the can or jar its tomato sauce with meat. Thats seem awkward.. Chef Boyardi Spaghetti and Gravy. I love diffrent cultures.
my mouth is watering, not had a good old homemade meal for ages, roast beef, Yorkshire puddings roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, veg and loads of gravy yum
OMG!! They have proper gangster names!!! That's awesome!!! Did they realise what you were taping for?... Larrie, Curlie, Paulie.. 3:50 starts to sound like a hold up... gosh, princess can you make a mini gangster movie for us? lol.
darn it...makes me miss my momma's cooking...big italian family...i can't even remember the last time i had a good homemade meal. love ya girl...thanks for the memories...
Diana, you're killing me here! I wonder how long it would take me to get to your house? If I leave right now and drive straight through (be sure to wear my diaper) I should be there in time for supper tomorrow! Heehee! (((Hugs)))! ~Mimi~
If it's in a jar in the store it's called "sauce" and I wouldn't piss in it if it was on fire. If it's made at home with love it's called "GRAVY." End of friggin story!
Ah man, if I had access to that place, neither of you two would fit in the front seat. How about I take you to Hawaii where they feature pigs heads and sushi and various seafoods, of course with the heads attached, because that's a whole other meal.
By the way, what do you call a white clam sauce? White clam sauce gravy? Maybe that's not even Italian. I don't know, I count on you all to inform me.
I'm so confused. Man I'm glad I didn't grow up on the east coast. I considered anything with a sauce like consistency with animal meat in it gravy, or if it was on pasta, sauce. That means cougar, pigeons, raccoons, catfish, ok, I'm making this up, but you get where I'm coming from?
That was great fun to watch. I used to live in Germany and they are lucky to still have the meat market culture over there... but I agree with the folks upthread, the time is ticking for the mom and pop shop everywhere these days... what a shit world it will be when there are only a dozen big chain stores. That's so nice you are advertising him!
I love this video! Reminds me of my days in Brooklyn....sigh! I can even hear what sounds like Frank Sinatra crooning in the background! Thanks for the local flavor!
now I'm hungry Diana! can hardly wait to see you make the "gravy". I'm from the south and our gravy is meat drippings, flour and milk...big difference. PEACE
I thought it was us in England who invented gravy? Whenever I have meat I love a lot of gravy! It has to cover everything. Meat and vegetables and French Fries. By the way we in England invented fried potato sticks! We call them chips. Hence our national dish of "Fish and Chips" God bless her royal highness the Queen! You know about them Princess Di.
"Hot stuffed peppers, you want them? You love them"
Did you buy them? I am an accent whore. When I meet people I suck in their accents. I can't help it. I hope they don't think I'm taking the piss when I end up talking like them! Yes it's gravy not sauce!

You're so sexy
PrincessDiana161 4 years ago
You got a single sistah? lol
Pipistrello 4 years ago
Ah man, if I had access to that place, neither of you two would fit in the front seat. How about I take you to Hawaii where they feature pigs heads and sushi and various seafoods, of course with the heads attached, because that's a whole other meal.

By the way, what do you call a white clam sauce? White clam sauce gravy? Maybe that's not even Italian. I don't know, I count on you all to inform me.
rhythm7a 4 years ago
It's still white clam sauce. Or, just clams and (name of pasta).
Pipistrello 4 years ago
But it's got meat in it?
rhythm7a 4 years ago
It's called White clam sauce LOL but there's a red one too....or Fra Diavlo also...that's a red spicy sauce
PrincessDiana161 4 years ago
I'm so confused. Man I'm glad I didn't grow up on the east coast. I considered anything with a sauce like consistency with animal meat in it gravy, or if it was on pasta, sauce. That means cougar, pigeons, raccoons, catfish, ok, I'm making this up, but you get where I'm coming from?

Ahh back in the days! When I was a youngster on Long Island!

Can't wait to see your meal, yum! Do you ever buy cannoli's from Bruno's?
cynlynj 4 years ago
I'm not a big fan of cannoli's.....if I do buy them I get the shell and make my own filling

You're videos are 'real' if that makes sense. More field trips!!
