yep its not a heron, they are more grey, i dunno why all these vids call them herons, they may know their cameras but they dunno their wildlife...

unless the great egret is a memeber of the heron family... or vice versa

heh heh, yep its a Great Egret, and like i thought, and since found out it is a member of the heron family! but most people would call it an Egret and altho there is a white heron its slighty different...

one way to know the difference between the white form of the great blue heron and the great egret, is that during breeding season, the flesh on the base of the egrets bill is usually green (im not sure if it remains green)... and the whooping crane... has a red face mask and flies with its next straight out... hope that helps :D

Your bird vids have been making me aware of the tremendous launch even the little ones make as they take to flight.

Here it is so apparent. If the crane (or egret, it might be) had not hunched down and then launched so strongly, he would not have been high enough to make that first wing stroke a full sweep.

Floating water birds cannot exactly launch, and so must use half-sweeps until they are high enough not to dip their wings in the water.
