  • Whenever you seek to teach someone anything, you must use the external environment. You cannot access the mind directly and therefore cannot change it. If you let beginning writers just 'vent their mind' on paper, they will likely write badly. To improve their 'self expression' you will still rely on external teaching cues in the environment. In no way does their mind cause their writing to improve. The environmentally maintained behavior of writing improves their abilities.

  • I think it was Northrop Frye who expressed his displeasure with exams and the exam model, saying that student learn in social settings by discourse with other students, challenging them to truly understand the subjects they are talking about in order to get ideas across to others.
