  • I have to admit: possibly this could be the first (and only.. ?! ) Gilbert performance ever that likes me.

For the rest, personally i don't have so much to say: two different planets. Comparing Gilbert to EJ is like comparing a kid playin' Guitar Hero to a Stradivari.

  • The song was over and Paul Gilbert's still jerking off with NOTHING to say on his instrument. Just a glory seeking asshole is all he is.

  • gilbert definitely takes this one

  • @winrar give me a break. 90% of us guitar players on youtube who have been playing for awhile can play Gilberts leads note for note because they are nothing but pentatonic scales and licks. Try playing the stuff Eric plays right off the cuff.. You can't because it's not basic pentatonic shit. Also, Eric is not a show off when plays with other guitarist, but it always seems like the "Other" guitarist have to try and play "over the top" to try and prove themselves. They R not in Erics League.

  • @GaRhythym

think you took my comment too much to heart. eric's a great guitarist and i admire his playing. in this specific video i think gilbert played better.

  • the entire time EJ's probably thinking. "my god this mother fucker is TALL! and look at that PINKY! or well at least i can still hear"

  • damn at 5.16 !!! eric johnson !!! damn that was one epic phrase he just played . MEN GREAT TO FINALLY FIND A VIDEO OF THE TWO GODS SHREDDING TOGETHER !! I LOVE THEM BOTH

  • @LameDuckPGMFireman Awesome-thanks. I stand corrected. He sounds like a great guy. He must be high on LIFE, because he sure looks like he's having a good time!! :O) (and playing some serious guitar)...

  • Holy crap! My two favourite guitarists.

  • bookguitarguy nails it re/"the arts". You could apply this to a million a-holes who frequent the comments section on You Tube. However, bookguitarguy, If you follow Gilbert and EJ you'll know they're "on something". It's called guitar nirvana-mastery (not drugs) Maybe you can ask these guys for a urine sample next time your "speculating"?

  • @ClassofEighty2 Oh, lighten up-I already stated that I stand corrected. There's nothing wrong with speculating, as long as it's identified as such. Unlike some @ssholes on YouTube, I try very hard to be clear about what I know to be a fact, what is my opinion, & what is only a possible explanation for something/theory/speculation. No thanks on the urine sample :O/. Just speculating again, but it sounds to me like you might have a drug issue yourself-or did in the past? Again-just speculating :O)

  • I'm also tempted to speculate that Gilbert is on something (drugs), while Eric is clean-but I don't know that for sure. :O))

  • Man, I'm glad I heard them play together. Who cares who is better? It's not like any of you folks are the guys up on stage, so who is better doesn't really concern any of you. Just enjoy the music, for god's sake.

  • When you are into tricks you really like Gilbert and he is your god. Then you turn 18 and start appreciating tasteful music. This is when you understand that Eric Johnson just doesn't sit on another plane, he sits on another planet. Children will simply not get him. It's beyond them. :))

  • @sweetnothing1977 You really think that Eric Johnson being buried in effects played better than Paul Gilbert in this video? If it wasn't for his heavily processed sound Eric wouldn't be able to "pull off" half of his descending licks as his effects fill in the holes his inefficient technique creates. Sheer notes per second AND melody within the context of the chord progression, Paul shows that Eric skill is wanting of far more refinement.

  • @nmc9x23 Basically, whether there is such a thing as "better" in the arts, or just favorites, your need to be critical and tear somebody down/make it a competition ("my daddy can beat your daddy", "my penis is bigger than yours") only proves that you have a character defect, and are insecure because BOTH of them are better than you'll ever be at anything!!! Gilbert is awesome, but you also conveniently forgot to mention that having to think about vocals also takes some focus away from the leads.

  • @bookguitarguy Apparently you are the one with epeen problems, my critique said nothing about my playing, but I appreciate the mention! I never said that one was BETTER in expressing themselves; I simply pointed out that Paul plays in front of his effects and establishes melodies, whereas EJ is hidden within his effects and those said effects are the reason EJ can "do" what he "does" on guitar. Technically & melodically EJ isn't in the same class as Paul Gilbert. YMMV.

  • @nmc9x23 What about cliffs of dover, manhattan, loneny in the night, gem... Etc? EJ is one of the most melodical guitarrist...And don't compare these two guitarrist, because they play different styles of music.

  • @StrifeGuitar you're correct as EJ and PG are vastly different guitarists. This all started a few posts ago. EJ is an accomplished guitarist, but technically and melodically I find his work wanting and too heavily buried in effects. I've always found EJ to be the Kenny G of guitar.

  • @nmc9x23 I don't think the same, but it's your opinion and it's ok for me.

  • @nmc9x23 Congratulations... You're now officially responsible for the dumbest remark/comment on any EJ or PG video available here on YT! EJ's work is "wanting" in both the melodical and technical aspect? WOW... I'm all for opinions but that statement's just plain old moronic. I guess your feeling were hurt when someone said they preferred EJ's playing over PG's...huh? I mean... I love them both... comparing the two, on the other hand, is like comparing apples and oranges = not very bright

  • @sweetnothing1977 hey hey man I'm 18 but I've loved eric johnson since i was like 15. they're both up there on my list favs and obviously for insanely different reasons.

  • Paul Gilbert blew Johnson back into his mothers vagina

  • @philybates Lucky are we that EJ and PG are humble enough not to think such thoughts about a fellow guitarist.

  • Some of Johnson's runs really sound like Shawn Lane here - You can bet Gilbert noticed it, too - They were both lucky enough to have played with the monster on several occasions. It's great to be reminded of how much they all influenced each other, starting from what seems like so long ago (in the late 70s to mid-80s at the latest)

  • Paul owned the whole gig ...

  • theyre cutting heads or should I say cutting hairs..

  • shawn lane and eric have pretty similar licks when it comes to pentatonic!

  • wow poor eric just got DESTROYED by a long haired clown!!! lol really Gilbert has soul vibe and passion and eric...elevater muzzak

  • @STORYTASTIC If Eric is playing "elevater muzzak" then I'm going to start spending a lot of times on elevators

  • @STORYTASTIC paul gilbert yuck!

  • wow poor eric just got DESTROYED by a long haired clown!!!

  • What made this jam magical (as it were) is the fact that both Johnson and Gilbert emphasize melody over mere flash and chops. Either of them can play anything he wants anytime it occurs to him; it's the "occurring" -- the spontaneous composition -- that makes their leads amazing, not just the performance of them (that is the chops/speed).

I LOVE it when people at this level enjoy listening to each other as these two obviously did.

  • Yeh it was a great night, I've got two more clips I've yet to upload, it's another surprise! :)

  • @mkilner Please do! This is seriously awesome

  • Magnificent! I've got a feeling i am going to be watching this video time and time again. Thanks fo much for posting.

  • amazing!

  • Thank you so much for recording this amazing piece of guitar history!
