I went to stratford another school in nashville and I can tell you the kids are very disrespectful towards the teachers. Especially these younger ones example my senior year I was in a class full of underclassmen they were so disrespectful and mean that the teacher just quit and I flat out refused to be in there after that and the sub was fine with that. I also had to retake algebra and they wanted to be in a class full of freshmen but I couldn't do it those kids were just a hot ass mess.

Actually, I'm curious as to whether or not the class had planned this for the teacher, considering the kid who was filming this "just happened" to have his phone on recording this. I think the kid should have his ass kicked because apparently he was in on it, filming it and egging the others on. The other kids should also have their ass kicked (severaly punished and perhaps not allowed to return). But, of course they are just "children" and the teacher had poor classroom management.
Maybe the people that don´t want to study shouldn´t go to school...Education is a privilege, so only the ones really desiring to improve their lives should be admitted. The teacher doesn´t knows how to put order, and the kids there are just sent, ot realizing the purpose of being there :(

So much depends upon the truths that led up to this tragic incident. There were times when I was unable to take attendance in a classes because the middle or high schoolers wouldn't cooperate. The just wouldn't listen. As far as trying to get them to attend to their studies, that was impossible. If anything this shows, disengaged parents and absent administrators. The world's upcoming third world work-force is on its way via America.

i know many people who went to this school and i was suppose to go there. the teacher shouldnt have acted like that but i can understand why he had a nervous breakdown. kids around there have no respect.
I understand completely how he got to that point. Locked in a snake pit all day with hatred,mean remarks, vulgarity, trifling laziness, body odors, nose picking and loud shrieks can take its toll. They have you outnumbered and they know no one wants to inconvenience themselves to do anything about it. All the while, you care passionately about your subject and regret that the few who are trying are mowed under with the group bluster.
He should have taken a "mental break" day off! He could have spent the whole day at the spa, getting a massage or a facial, relaxing in the hot tub or sauna, drinking herbal teas or even some champagne.
If he didn't have the money for the spa, then he should have done some yoga stretches and soaked in bubble bath.
Or if he needed more time, he should have requested a leave of absence.
Once back at work, he should have tried "PRAYING TO JESUS"!

I feel sorry 4 the teacher in this situation. I don't agree with how he handled it, but it's hard to judge how anyone would react in his place. We just seen a window of less than 2 min of how rude, loud, obnoxious, and disrespectful these kids were 2 him. Who knows if this was just the last straw 4 him. @mholodnak umm Nashville has two of the top of schools in the nation: Hume Fogg and MLK. Maybe you should think before you start judging the schools of an entire city based on the actions of ONE teacher at ONE school.
@kjp2345 Hume Fogg is a great school but that from my understanding it's a Private School. Judging this because of friends of mine live at the Exchange on Church Street and the high school is Hillsboro, which is a great school from my understanding. Nashville as a whole has several good schools but when it comes to high school but according to NCES.gov schools in Williamson Co, Wilson Co and Warren Co are in the top ratings for overall testing scores. This teacher could have been in one of them

this is only news b/c someone got it on video. we had several teachers slam down chairs to get peoples attention except it actually DID shut people up! other teachers just said, "that's it, I'll be on my computer if you need me" and then students would actually ask for the teacher to continue teaching.

@EzacK05 I don't think getting stricter is going in the right direction. I went to a high school where students were treated as they should be - young adults. My school has no dress code. No one bullied anyone else. Littering was not much of a problem. When you treat teens like adults, they will act like adults. And it's not like there was a sacrifice of quality. My school has been the best public school in the region for the few years it has been open.
Respect? They don't even respect themselves. How can teachers respect students who are obviously not interested in learning in the first place? This is why I hate mandatory education, because it makes it worse for those who actually WANT the education and desire a scholarly life.
But of course, I have to ask, what KIND of school is this? What TYPE of students go there?
@YoungSpotUBrock I am one of the teenagers of today. Not that it should matter; teenagers have always been the same. My high school is not selective at all. Anyone can apply. It is a simple but tough charter school. The kids who can't handle it just leave.
I think mandatory education is silly as well, but the school system is rigged against most students from the start. A blessed few have good parents, learn to love education and can escape. Others need external help, and few receive it.

Hey, Kids express themselves too much. They have too many choices today and guess what, when they are out in the workforce, there will be no choices. You don a tie and uniform and take some orders or you go home after you check in at the unemployment office. I am a teacher and I know what it is like. Speaking as someone who attended some pretty good Nashville schools, they certainly exist, but alas, they're few and far between. Meigs, Martin Luther King High and Hume Fogg High (which are magnet schools) all have pretty rigid classes and decent teachers (with the occasional terrible one). The problem is that they stand in stark contrast to the rest of Nashville's public education. I was fortunate to avoid it, but only under 10% of Nashville's kids will be able to attend. So yeah.
@mholodnak Don't take this as a view of ALL schools in Nashville, Nashville has two of the best high schools in the nation (MLK and Hume Fogg), and Meigs Middle School is also very good. And I know several kids from Overton High School who went on to top universities. Yes, a lot of the schools in Nashville are subpar, but don't think they ALL are.

He should have taken a "mental break" day off! He could have spent the whole day at the spa, getting a massage or a facial, relaxing in the hot tub or sauna, drinking herbal teas or even some champagne.
If he didn't have the money for the spa, then he should have done some yoga stretches and soaked in bubble bath.
Or if he needed more time, he should have requested a leave of absence.
Once back at work, he should have tried "PRAYING TO JESUS"!

I feel sorry 4 the teacher in this situation. I don't agree with how he handled it, but it's hard to judge how anyone would react in his place. We just seen a window of less than 2 min of how rude, loud, obnoxious, and disrespectful these kids were 2 him. Who knows if this was just the last straw 4 him. It makes me sick 2 see kids act like this. How long had they been tormenting him prior to this video? Those students should be ashamed of themselves. I think the teacher needs therapy after this

Judging this because of friends of mine live at the Exchange on Church Street and the high school is Hillsboro, which is a great school from my understanding. Nashville as a whole has several good schools but when it comes to high school but according to NCES.gov schools in Williamson Co, Wilson Co and Warren Co are in the top ratings for overall testing scores. This teacher could have been in one of them

this is only news b/c someone got it on video. we had several teachers slam down chairs to get peoples attention except it actually DID shut people up! other teachers just said, "that's it, I'll be on my computer if you need me" and then students would actually ask for the teacher to continue teaching.

These classrooms are way overcrowded. No teacher should EVER have more than 18 in ANY primary classroom.
When you have 25-35 kids in ANY classroom, a teacher has just been reduced to basically a babysitter, putting out constant fires and cannot teach.
Classroom size limits are the single most important factor for a proper education.
One on One teaching is the absolute best but not realistic, so you must draw the line on class size.

@EzacK05 I don't think getting stricter is going in the right direction. I went to a high school where students were treated as they should be - young adults. My school has no dress code. No one bullied anyone else. Littering was not much of a problem. When you treat teens like adults, they will act like adults. And it's not like there was a sacrifice of quality. My school has been the best public school in the region for the few years it has been open.

@YoungSpotUBrock I am one of the teenagers of today. Not that it should matter; teenagers have always been the same. My high school is not selective at all. Anyone can apply. It is a simple but tough charter school. The kids who can't handle it just leave.
I think mandatory education is silly as well, but the school system is rigged against most students from the start. A blessed few have good parents, learn to love education and can escape. Others need external help, and few receive it.

Hey, Kids express themselves too much. They have too many choices today and guess what, when they are out in the workforce, there will be no choices. You don a tie and uniform and take some orders or you go home after you check in at the unemployment office. I am a teacher and I know what it is like. Kids can speak to however they like but you so much as bat the wrong eye at them, and you're done. Funny thing is I teach at an all white school and the kids there could be worse.

I have seen some really bad teachers here in TN and they are normally very mean and abusive and their students are afraid to mock them like they were mocking this guy so it is very obvious he wasn't like this everyday or they would never have dared to show him the level if disrespect they did. Public High-schools should have new policy on students quotas, I mean that everyone should apply if they want in. That way kids would appreciate the value of education! In my country many people don´t get the chance to get education. I can feel for the teacher ! Speaking as someone who attended some pretty good Nashville schools, they certainly exist, but alas, they're few and far between. Meigs, Martin Luther King High and Hume Fogg High (which are magnet schools) all have pretty rigid classes and decent teachers (with the occasional terrible one). The problem is that they stand in stark contrast to the rest of Nashville's public education. I was fortunate to avoid it, but only under 10% of Nashville's kids will be able to attend. So yeah.

@mholodnak Don't take this as a view of ALL schools in Nashville, Nashville has two of the best high schools in the nation (MLK and Hume Fogg), and Meigs Middle School is also very good. And I know several kids from Overton High School who went on to top universities. Yes, a lot of the schools in Nashville are subpar, but don't think they ALL are.
