this plane is no match for the latest variants of the su-35 much less for the comming pak-fa wich will be in service by 2015 while this will come by 2017 at the most. some are already in service but they are plagued with problems due to the fact that is not ready yet. And I wouldn't say their army is the most powerful. It's the most expensive, but China has more manpower, and Russians have more reliable and cost-effective vehicles and equipment (try to start up any American techno toy in real winter condition). It really depends where and who you are fighting. It's not a proof that US has the most powerful army because they can have slaughterfests in Middle East...

A plane can be a bomber and a fighter at the same time. It's to small for a bomber, it cant hold enough bombs.
And it is way to slow for a fighter. It also has a huge turning circle. It loses a dogfight against russian or chinese fighter. And for every hour it flies, it has to be 100 hours on the ground for maintainence and checks be4 it can taje of again. Not ideal for a war i would say.
I thing they put to much money in the f35 JFS becouse of the mirerable performance.

Rafale has no problems to detect an F22 or F35, it is being equiped with aesa radar, has 2nd generation ir + cam sensor to detect betwen 50 to 100km all weather. + link 16 and french link to share informations from other radars stations, awacs satellites ect... It has also spectra defense system tht can locate threats using passive sensors.

I do believe that the F22 has undergone a retro fit to make this standard since.

@Slash396 no the Air Force wants to replace its A 10s with the F 35 by 2028. plus just because it has the F designation doesn't make it only a fighter aircraft, as its a "Multirole Joint Strike Fighter", which in lamence terms means a fighter aircraft with ground attack capabilities. you'll also notice that the A-10 is the only fixed wing aircraft with the A designation in the USAF as of right now, even though fighters like the F-15E and F-16 are used almost exclusively as ground attack aircraft
@controlusplease1 I dont know where you are getting your info but its wrong. The A-10 is loved by the USAF, they wont replace it until they have another anti tank jet. The F-35 is replacing the F-15, F-16, and F-18 A/B/C. Multi-role aircraft means it will be used for bombings,dogfights, and recon operations, just like the F-15 and F-16. They dont use fighter jets the way they do with the A-10 because the A-10 can fly low,slow and shoot accurately, something other jets have a hard time with.

Clearly you don't understand military designations. A JSF is a STRIKE bomber, with fighter capabilities, meaning that air to air combat would be its secondary priority. It is meant to be used in the ground attack role, even though its not suited for it like the A-10 & F-15E are. Don't believe me? look it up.

@santanderino91 They've shelved the joint strike fighter and continued in a limited capacity the Raptor. No one really wants the F35 because its too expensive and too limited in its weapons arsonal. While the soviets and chinese come up with some really 'nifty' simulations of futuristic aircraft, they are very overrated. Like the mig 25 the soviets were just a 'little' bit less than honest about how well the mig was, many believe the same of the new generation of soviet fighters.

All new models will be equiped with same type of electronics used in typhoon or rafale. Doesn't this use the same sensor package that the Typhoon used to stomp all over the F22 in many exercises? (AWACS FTW) I think Giulio Douhet would be more interested in this aircraft than the F22 also. (Google it)
@KrakkersBB There's never been an exercise where the overrated Eurofighter "stomped all over" F-22s. There has, however, been an incident where Pakistani F-16s took a shit all over the Eurofighter at a Turkey air exercise. :)
@wandererprime The eurofighter is not overrated, it is overpriced. This jet is excelent but don't give you a bang for the money.In air to air and manoeuvrability it is excellent. I have no doubt that an eurofighter can outmanoeuvre a f22, because it is lighter and has better aerodynamics ( no internal payload ). I think rafale eurofighter mirage2000 and some others light fighters can outmanoeuver f22. A big fighter has never advantage on lighter jets for dogfights.
1. What I mean by "overrated" in this context is that Eurofighter fanboys believe their jet could take on a UFO in a dogfight and believe all apocryphal anecdotes about its capabilities. As for your next point - I agree to an extend. In a subsonic dogfight the Typhoon would most likely come on top, but that's one myopic prism of aerial warfare.
2. When you account for all avenues such as super cruise, avionics, fly-by-the-wire etc the Eurofighter does not come up to snuff. Due to the advances of missile-guidance, ballistic science, and telemetry the majority of future aerial fights will be BVR, something that demands stealth; stealth capabilities that the Eurofighter either has very little or none at all. In beyond visual range you're as good as dead if you can't detect where your adversary is currently.
3. There are countires experimenting with Generation 5 fighters, such as Russia anouncing the development of the PAK FA, which will include stealth. The problem is that Generation 4(F-18 Super Hornet, Dassault Rafale and Typhoon Eurofighter) radars will have an increasingly difficult time pinpointing these aircraft's signatures. As I said, in BVR(Beyond Visual Range) you're as good as dead if you can't pick up an enemy's presence, but they can detect you.

The F35 was intentionally designed to be secondary to the F22 because the F35 is to be exported to other countries, while the F22 is exclusive to the United States. The only reason the US is even making F35's is because they're cheaper and perform air-to-ground more effectively. The F22 is a straightforward air-superiority fighter, and the F35 just cannot come close in that aspect..

The f35 is just as much a piece of junk as the F22's. Lockheed martin invested a huge sum of money into the yak-141 project in 1994...Russia cancelled and never got it started to Lockheed took it back to the US and made the X-32 and the X-35 which then turned into the f-35 we know today this is no speculation these are factts. google them. and the yak-141 looks just like the f-35...it even works the same
@konischev Well yeah it's true Lockheed helped with the 141but all they gained out of it was the new idea for the F-35B varient's VTOL design instead of using something similar to the harrier, so the F-35 A's and C's have nothing to do with the 141. If you compare the f-35 to an f-22 and then compare that to an yf-22, then you'll see where Lockheed got 99% of the design, oh and the X-32 is made by boeing and was competing against the X-35, like how the yf-22 was competing against the Yf-23.

@konischev Apart from the rear it looks a lot like a Mig-31. Maybe you should do a little bit of comparing to other Russian aircraft before you start pointing the finger, oh and Lockheed Martin was given about 400 million for producing several prototypes so overall there wasn't much funding Lockheed had to put into 141 project, the Italian company Aermacchi also done something similar with the yak-130 except that went into production so there was no big payout needed.

Well yes & no. If you took Russian pilot Pugachev (I think that's how you spell it) out of his Sukhoi or MiG and gave him the F35, & put a rookie in the sukhoi, my money is on the Russian. The other way and my money is still on the Russian, but the technology would help the rookie's chances. Pilot skill can also go only so far. The PERFECT combat plane relies on PERFECT harmony between the pilot & the technology in the plane. And the F35's w/ their tech lost the war games.

@getembaltimoreclub I think he ment stealth bombers. The F-22 Isnt fully stealth, It has stealth skin and angles that are kinda hard to find but its not fully stealth like the b-2 or F-117 NightHawk

There are also political and economic factors in building out the F-35 instead of the F-22.The F-35 was designed for multiple countries and the US had to continue building out this plane or face huge political ramifications. The F-35 also has a large market for exports that will generate billions of dollars for The US while the US has banned the sale of the F-22 abroad due to it's sensitive technologies. These factors, not aircraft performance, were the reasons for canceling the F-22

And it is way to slow for a fighter. It also has a huge turning circle. It loses a dogfight against russian or chinese fighter. And for every hour it flies, it has to be 100 hours on the ground for maintainence and checks be4 it can taje of again. Not ideal for a war i would say.

Rafale has no problems to detect an F22 or F35, it is being equiped with aesa radar, has 2nd generation ir + cam sensor to detect betwen 50 to 100km all weather. + link 16 and french link to share informations from other radars stations, awacs satellites ect... It has also spectra defense system tht can locate threats using passive sensors.

@Wandererprime when even your source claims that the source is possibly suspect you need to rethink using it. there are no foolproof solutions in combat. my original statement regards F22 stands though as the Typhoon (as it is now known) has the option to use ground based and AWAC radars as its basis for BVR missile lock, which does give it a significant "extreme range" edge over other modern combat aircraft. I do believe that the F22 has undergone a retro fit to make this standard since.

@Slash396 no the Air Force wants to replace its A 10s with the F 35 by 2028. plus just because it has the F designation doesn't make it only a fighter aircraft, as its a "Multirole Joint Strike Fighter", which in lamence terms means a fighter aircraft with ground attack capabilities. you'll also notice that the A-10 is the only fixed wing aircraft with the A designation in the USAF as of right now, even though fighters like the F-15E and F-16 are used almost exclusively as ground attack aircraft

@controlusplease1 I dont know where you are getting your info but its wrong. The A-10 is loved by the USAF, they wont replace it until they have another anti tank jet. The F-35 is replacing the F-15, F-16, and F-18 A/B/C. Multi-role aircraft means it will be used for bombings,dogfights, and recon operations, just like the F-15 and F-16. They dont use fighter jets the way they do with the A-10 because the A-10 can fly low,slow and shoot accurately, something other jets have a hard time with.

Clearly you don't understand military designations. A JSF is a STRIKE bomber, with fighter capabilities, meaning that air to air combat would be its secondary priority. @santanderino91 They've shelved the joint strike fighter and continued in a limited capacity the Raptor. No one really wants the F35 because its too expensive and too limited in its weapons arsonal. While the soviets and chinese come up with some really 'nifty' simulations of futuristic aircraft, they are very overrated. Like the mig 25 the soviets were just a 'little' bit less than honest about how well the mig was, many believe the same of the new generation of soviet fighters.

@wandererprime The eurofighter is not overrated, it is overpriced. This jet is excelent but don't give you a bang for the money.In air to air and manoeuvrability it is excellent. I have no doubt that an eurofighter can outmanoeuvre a f22, because it is lighter and has better aerodynamics ( no internal payload ). I think rafale eurofighter mirage2000 and some others light fighters can outmanoeuver f22. A big fighter has never advantage on lighter jets for dogfights.

2. When you account for all avenues such as super cruise, avionics, fly-by-the-wire etc the Eurofighter does not come up to snuff. Due to the advances of missile-guidance, ballistic science, and telemetry the majority of future aerial fights will be BVR, something that demands stealth; stealth capabilities that the Eurofighter either has very little or none at all. In beyond visual range you're as good as dead if you can't detect where your adversary is currently.

The F35 was intentionally designed to be secondary to the F22 because the F35 is to be exported to other countries, while the F22 is exclusive to the United States. The only reason the US is even making F35's is because they're cheaper and perform air-to-ground more effectively. The F22 is a straightforward air-superiority fighter, and the F35 just cannot come close in that aspect..

Lockheed martin invested a huge sum of money into the yak-141 project in 1994...Russia cancelled and never got it started to Lockheed took it back to the US and made the X-32 and the X-35 which then turned into the f-35 we know today this is no speculation these are factts. google them. and the yak-141 looks just like the f-35...it even works the same

@konischev Well yeah it's true Lockheed helped with the 141but all they gained out of it was the new idea for the F-35B varient's VTOL design instead of using something similar to the harrier, so the F-35 A's and C's have nothing to do with the 141. If you compare the f-35 to an f-22 and then compare that to an yf-22, then you'll see where Lockheed got 99% of the design, oh and the X-32 is made by boeing and was competing against the X-35, like how the yf-22 was competing against the Yf-23.

Maybe you should do a little bit of comparing to other Russian aircraft before you start pointing the finger, oh and Lockheed Martin was given about 400 million for producing several prototypes so overall there wasn't much funding Lockheed had to put into 141 project, the Italian company Aermacchi also done something similar with the yak-130 except that went into production so there was no big payout needed.

As much as this is a cutting edge fighter plane, war games/simulation against Russian Su27,30,35's in hte pacific showed it to be "doubly inferior" to the enemy in visual range dogfights. "Can't turn. cant climb. cant run"!

Well yes & no. If you took Russian pilot Pugachev (I think that's how you spell it) out of his Sukhoi or MiG and gave him the F35, & put a rookie in the sukhoi, my money is on the Russian. The other way and my money is still on the Russian, but the technology would help the rookie's chances. Pilot skill can also go only so far. The PERFECT combat plane relies on PERFECT harmony between the pilot & the technology in the plane. And the F35's w/ their tech lost the war games.

@Dantakurasaki im going by the upload date of the video, which was in 2008, i dont follow this show on TV so i have no idea how old it actually is, but if it was in 2008 then everything i said is still true except about how the nighthawk was obsolete which is still pretty much true because it was retired a month after this video came out, also i was on target with the F22 because it was well known and there were large numbers of them in 2008 so unless this video was posted late, i am right

@getembaltimoreclub I think he ment stealth bombers. The F-22 Isnt fully stealth, It has stealth skin and angles that are kinda hard to find but its not fully stealth like the b-2 or F-117 NightHawk

@A1FORC3 considering the air force currently only has 1 F-35 in its inventory, chances are slim that someone who isn't actually in the air force yet, will be able to pilot one of them for a long time. they leave the more expensive stuff to the experienced pilots

There are also political and economic factors in building out the F-35 instead of the F-22.The F-35 was designed for multiple countries and the US had to continue building out this plane or face huge political ramifications. The F-35 also has a large market for exports that will generate billions of dollars for The US while the US has banned the sale of the F-22 abroad due to it's sensitive technologies. These factors, not aircraft performance, were the reasons for canceling the F-22

@theUKinthe80s yes these were the major factors, but probably the biggest one is cost. each plane is outrageously expensive and even more importantly, maintenance is also very expensive considering that the stealth material peels off frequently and needs to be reapplied. your not wrong, im just adding
