At first I thought carly's version was good, but when I heard Leona's version, I was BLOWN AWAY. It was amazing, and twenty million times better than carly's. And don't throw that "they shouldn't be compared"crap to me, because one of them is obviously vocally superior than the other.
If I had to choose, Carly. She did very well reaching those high notes in the melody, seeing as she doesn't have as big a range as Leona. She also embellished her cover with a nice, soft rock sound. Her intro was more moving, her voice is very mellow in her chest voice while her accent was, for lack of a better word, splendid. Though Leona did excellent in the melody and the ending, but the background singers weren't a smart idea; her intonation was off when they joined.
Love both, they're absolutely flawless vocalists, but Leona's version put me to sleep for a while, Carly's version was absolutely fantastic and I'd choose her in a heartbeat.

but you gotta think about it. Carly might not be as good because of the power of voice leona has but you have to give carly credit that she can actually sing very well. she also has power and control to her low tone and leona does not have that. you can make carly sing a low tone song and it'll sound so awesome but you can't tell that with leona in the beginning of this song. :/ it's either one or the other, but carly has it both.
Probably Carly's best but Leona is 100 times the artist Carly is. The judges even said Carly's was only "pretty good". Unless you're American there's simply no comparison-Leona is world class Carly is simply American class. Cowell said it all.

i like Carly's version of the deeper notes [surprisingly] but its only because i think Leona at those parts goes too low [ONLY at some parts] and i cant even understand what she's saying [only at some parts, like i said] However, Leona does incredible at hitting the higher notes.
carly is really struggling on the notes requiring a good pair of lungs so leonas version is far better and leona does a bit of vocal athletics in her version

It's obvious that carly can't reach the lower tones, with how she changes them. She also cut down on the lengths of the notes, where Leona didn't hold back.
All in all I think Leonas version is better, but I'm not saying she doesn't have weaknesses in her voice, especially in the lower range.
But Leona didn't hold back, or she is simply more fierce.

If you listen to Maria Carey's version her low register is also very quiet ... it is dynamics my friends. Soft and mellow; almost a whisper (which is much harder to sing than singing louder) and Leona's range is just outstanding.
I think in time, when Leona gets more experience she could give a performance that equals or matches Mariah's version. Carly could never achieve that.

one more thing:the X Factor is a competition for the judges, too, and each judge gets a category, and whoever has the category of the winning contestant wins. So if he says she's great, people will vote for her, and did (although she did actually deserve to win, I'm just saying she wasn't as perfect as he made her out to be)

I like both of their versions of the song. Though I think Leona Lewis did this very well I think that Carly did better in comparison. Leona's voice was shaking a lot and I had trouble understanding what she was singing. Her voice also isn't as unique as Carly's, I feel like I've heard people that sound like her before.
Leona! I have to admit, I've not heard Carly before and she was great, especially in the low notes but personally I think Leona's version of this is stunnning. Leona did have Simon's support from day one but that is because she is exceptionally talented and nice with it. i like Carly's version of the deeper notes [surprisingly] but its only because i think Leona at those parts goes too low [ONLY at some parts] and i cant even understand what she's saying [only at some parts, like i said] However, Leona does incredible at hitting the higher notes.

It's obvious that carly can't reach the lower tones, with how she changes them. She also cut down on the lengths of the notes, where Leona didn't hold back.
All in all I think Leonas version is better, but I'm not saying she doesn't have weaknesses in her voice, especially in the lower range.
But Leona didn't hold back, or she is simply more fierce.

Carly has a great voice but it cannot compare to Leona's. Leona Lewis along with Christina Aguilera are the best singers under 30. Beyonce cannot even outsing Leona Lewis, it's not possible. No one can EVER sing this song the way Mariah sang it, but Leona..came damn close.

As much as i enjoy Carly's singing, Leona Lewis is one of the best singer's on this planet.
If you listen to Maria Carey's version her low register is also very quiet ... it is dynamics my friends. Soft and mellow; almost a whisper (which is much harder to sing than singing louder) and Leona's range is just outstanding.
I think in time, when Leona gets more experience she could give a performance that equals or matches Mariah's version. Carly could never achieve that.

one more thing:the X Factor is a competition for the judges, too, and each judge gets a category, and whoever has the category of the winning contestant wins. Leona was in Simon's category, and I don't know if you've noticed, but voters often seem to listen to his opinion over the other judges' on both shows. So if he says she's great, people will vote for her, and did (although she did actually deserve to win, I'm just saying she wasn't as perfect as he made her out to be)

Here I come Again, she completely changed the arrangement and gave an amazing vocal, and all Simon did was criticize her outfit. Professional critics watching this show loved Carly, so obviously there is something wrong with Simon, not Carly. And God, Leona's a great singer, but that whiny quality in her voice just grates on my nerves after a while.

I think that in this particular performance, Leona was probably better, although Carly's lower notes were better. The thing is, Simon either does not know as much about music as he should, or for some reason is trying to make her look bad, because while he never had any bad comments for Leona (for example he could have mentioned that the first half of the song was too low for her, and too quiet) every week, he withheld praise from Carly when she really deserved it. It's a tie. Carly definitely wins in the lower register, you can barely even hear Leona. But Carly's high notes aren't as good as Leona's but Carly has such volume. They're both good in their own way, but not as good as Mariah's.

Please, all you have to do is listen to Simon's comments. On carly's: 'It was an OK version.' On Leona's: 'An incredible performance.' I am from the UK, and love them both. I thought Carly should have gone a lot further in AI. Still in my view Carly has better tone and is great in the lower register. Once it goes higher, Leona's version is untouchable, but Carly's is great too.

well leona wasnt allowed to sing the whole song either. but i do agree, i hate how they barely let people actually SING on american idol. imagine how amazing it would have been to see season 1 kelly and tamyra facing off, while having OVER 10 seconds to sing a damn song! american idol uses too many gimmicks, and as a result, the singing time is 1:30 seconds-ish compared to X Factor's 2:20 seconds.

Leona and Archie are both marketable even tho they only sing ballads, and also she was in Simon's catagory, so he's gonna stretch it a bit. if you look at his past comments he does tend to do that. Carly and Bo Bice are my favorite idol contestants ever and this year went to shit fast over here two blatantly uncalled for elimination and archuleta's huge huge overhyping so it was a bit of a struggle to make sure talent won this year (luckily in the end it did). I like Leona enough, she's interesting and i hope to hear more from both. but overall IMO both this song and better contestant overall gotta go to carly in my book. its all good

I prefer Leona's performance. Her voice can go everywhere effortlessly and she sings in a way that makes you really feel the emotions in the song.
I always think Carly tends to shout too much when she sings, so much that it's a bit uncomfortable to listen to.

I like both of their versions of the song. Though I think Leona Lewis did this very well I think that Carly did better in comparison. Leona's voice was shaking a lot and I had trouble understanding what she was singing. Her voice also isn't as unique as Carly's, I feel like I've heard people that sound like her before.

Leona! I have to admit, I've not heard Carly before and she was great, especially in the low notes but personally I think Leona's version of this is stunnning. Leona did have Simon's support from day one but that is because she is exceptionally talented and nice with it. Let's be honest, if she was everage, he wouldn't have backed her and her version of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' in particular proved that she's a special talent. Carly's great though!
