Also, I think they should have left Optimus Prime dead in this episode, it is by far one of the best episodes of the series and a good ending for Prime. The "Return of Optimus Prime" episode completely ignores the fact Prime and his ship were entirely destroyed in this episode. Lastly, it's too bad we didn't get to see Ironhide again.

@Ms9piece It mentions on the 20th anniversary Movie DVD that this episode was being worked on before the movie was released. So they had no idea the crap they would get for killing him off in the movie. Then to make matters worse, bring him back as a zombie to kill his fellow Autobots.
That's why they rushed that 2 parter to bring him back for good with no reason explanation why the ship is intact or the fact his body is undamaged when they found him.
I Think about this since hasbro decided to bring optimus prime back to the show after a backlash from kids & parents hasbro should've re-issued the 1984 optimus prime toy that would've been better instead of making a powermaster toy version of him in 1988 which i remember a friend of mine in 5th grade had powermaster prime in 1988......
@PrimalWolf2006 If you mean the name change where all that time Optimus was fighting Rodimus? The way I see it is this. Once Rodimus gave back the Matrix to Optimus. From that moment until Optimus gave the MAtrix back to Rodimus. In between those two moments, as far as I'm concern, he was Hot Rod, not Rodimus Prime.
This episode tought me that life is so fucking short that material things don't matter because once you die you can't take them to heaven or hell with you, and that you can only take the memories of the time you shared with those material things so do what you can with them while you are on this earth but still leave time for family and friends I have transformer toys and model trains and I don't do anything with them I am going to play with them that way I have memories of them not just family
This one makes me cry every time. I'm 18 and still get emotional over Transformers, but damn this episode is just what it's titled as, 'Dark'. Eerie and sorrowful, no wonder people either really love or really hate this episode.
I for one am glad at least in this episode they didnt bow down to a bunch of whiny bitch kids who couldnt stand the realities of life. Pretty much all heroes die in the end, and yes, this episode made me cry as a small kid, but it taught me something of life.
I also think its really touching with the ending of how Optimus and Rodimus thought of eachother. Optimus thought he was worthy.
Still, this was the last episode of Transformers I ever watched. Bringing Optimus back for good was stupid.
Hot Rod sucks the big one, the loser. Prime was and always will be the best. The new movies don't even come close to filling his shoes and as for the way they look, yes cinematicaly good but not in the same league as the animated. @bumblebee7735 Optimus has one major flaw: He can't grow. He's a great hero figure, perfect role model right from the start. If they hadn't gone the star wars route with it and FINALLY made his history as Orion Pax. NOW he's had time to grow, but even before he accepted the matrix he was considered to be the big man, a great warrior with an even greater spirit... Hot Rod has flaws, but those are what made him a good character. While I love Optimus, he can't grow... Yet ;)

Whyd they make Hot Rod the leader? why didnt they write that Ultra Magnus be leader? he looks better and has better colors and is more optimus primey than that other guy.
@knuclear2010 Magnus was the leader, but he never wanted it, and the Matrix never embraced him; It selected Hot Rod as the most worthy, against all odds. That was the irony of it all - Magnus had the colors, the shape, the stature, but it wasn't his place. I loved that they actually followed a plotline, having Hot Rod grow along the way and learn from his mistakes. This was a deep episode.
When Optimus is in control of the flagship and orders the other Autobots to return, he has his left arm again... Hot Rod and Rodimus Prime switch character models at random as usual.

I still dont know.I started to read the uk marvel comic transformers and there is an info wich suggest that prime actually stronger then galvatron....And the logical thing is that Galvatron is stronger then hes original self MEGATRON.
So i was a little confused who is the boss around.For example when ultra magnus is in that mood even he was able to beat galvatron.At least once this happen in the comic books(uk version).So i wasnt sure who is strong or who is weak..

@gun844 that was the beauty of Hot Rod's story arc - growing from a party loving kid that never dreamed he would be anything, to becoming that stable, confident leader of the Autobots. I love Optimus and as a kid the 2 part Return was my favorite episodes, but Hot Rod gets way too much hate. Ya gotta respect him.

i know optimus does come back for good, but this episode pisses me off because they bring optimus back just to kill him again. and they blew up the bodies of prowl, ironhide and ratchet. that's just cold
@ademonandangel According to the writers, this episode was to make clear to fans that Optimus Prime was gone for good. At this point they had no intentions of bringing him back for good until the massive fan outcry over his death in the movie made them reconsider. This episode, poor animation quality aside was my favorite from this season and probably the darkest of the whole series IMO

I kind of thought of this episode as a slap to the face. Hasbro brought back our most beloved transformer... Only to kill him again. We had to wait for the series finale to see Optimus brought back for good.

To Rodimus haters: The intent behind having a kid (Hot Rod) "grow up" to be the leader of the Autobots is to tell a story of hardship, uncertainty, and ultimately growth and maturity. It was Rodimus' destiny to become a grand leader, and in this episode he took his first step in that direction. "Optimus! Front and center! I'm taking command." These are the words of a good, strong leader. Because G1 ended shortly after this, though, Rodimus never got the chance to show us what he could do.
@davidr64yt I personally think Rodimus was poorly written in season 3. At the end of the 86 movie, he was confident and headstrong . The writers of season 3 made him look like a total wuss and ready to give up at any sign of pressure. It's unfortunate because he did have a few good moments and add the backlash over Optimus Prime's death and they never did give him a chance to grow as a leader.
@davidr64yt No the problem was there was no character development of hot rod going into the TF movie,which is why many hate him. Optimus was around from day 1,yet HR debuts in the movie and gets to become leader. It's nothing more than "here's the new guy,like him"kind of deal.

It's a good thing they were already developing season 3 as Transformers: The Movie came out. If they knew about the fuzz surrounding Optimus' death in the movie beforehand, I don't think this very best G1 episode would exist.
Lol, Blur...The Micro Machine man. I see they had Ultra Magnus wearing a bit of lipstick at the end there. It's been about 20, 21 years,but I knew I watched an episode of him dying a second time once before. Most memorable episode for me. Well that and Metroplex losing his eyes for Unicron.
This is one of the best episodes of this cartoon, possibly the best ever made; one of the few that could make me temporarily forget the show was designed to sell toys.
I know it sucks for many to have the Quints desecrate the Autobots' dead in such a manner, especially Optimus Prime. The only positive results I see is that it shows how much of a sadistic bastard the Quints are and how serious a threat they are to the galaxy.
And finally, this would hopefully shake up Rodimus's reality into taking the leadership mores seriously that he would actually do a better job in the future.

@tokoat983 The first time the episode aired, it didn't have the voice-over at the end. They replayed it again at the end of the season, right before The Return of Optimus Prime, and added the narration that time to lead into Prime's return. It was a big deal, I remember them showing these "alerts" at the end of episodes leading up to it, telling everyone that Prime was coming back.
For all those kids who were already traumatized by Prime getting killed off in the movie, this episode was nothing but rubbing salt in a too fresh wound (episode aired basically one month after the movie was released). Showing a crappily animated Prime with half his face blown off was quite tasteful too. Hot Rod's little hurried faux eulogy at the end of it made me hate him even more. They tried to legitimize and cement Hot Rod's leadership in this episode, but only made you want Prime back more
i liked the episode...There always has to be a passing of the torch. No one ike hot rod gettting the matrix. But that was the twist. The young brash egotistical one being the next great leader. sometimes it happns lke that. Every great leader must go eventually.

Where did you get this version of the episode? The Rhino DVD I have doesn't have the original ending where there is no narrator hinting at Optimus Prime's return at the end of the season.

The end of this episode made me want to cry. I think Hot Rod really came into his own in this episode, not needing the Matrix to help him win. Zombie Optimus was great.
Also you know the real reson, prime and many of the other autobots did not return, they could not afford the actors. They probably wanted more money after the movie came out. Esecially after working with Lenord Nemoy in the movie and several others that were well known. Casey casem. Yo Jo, it changed about the same time as GI Joe the movie I think.
@drewmichael25 Actually Scatman Crothers (the voice of Jazz) unfortunately died after to movie was released. And Casey Kasem (voice of Cliffjumper and Teletran 1) quit the show due to his objections to the way the show portrayed the middle east (since he was of middle eastern descent)
This is one creepy episode. (I love it!) That's really freaky when Optimus's arm flies off. Part of me was hoping he would say, "T'is but a scratch!" and then "Just a flesh wound!" :-P
What the hell, rodimus shrunk and turned back into hotrod after giving optimus prime back the matrix of leadership. But then when he fights optimus prime he is rodimus prime again and he is tall once more, before ever recieving the matrix of leadership back, get the f-ck out of here lol. The writters and designers need to be beaten severely for constantly contradicting themselves.
It was the 80's nobody cared about that stuff, especially in cartoons back then. But really, transformers is bad for continuity errors even by those standards. Just look at scenes with the seekers in it, you constantly get the starscreams voice for thundercraker and skywarps voice coming from starscream. Not to mention the color errors. It really is a mess.
I agree, back in the 800's you couldn't rewind or pause TV, and this was not out on VHS until later, still hard to pause. Watch airwolf and Knight Rider, awsome show, but so many flaws. If they Only knew the technology we would have 20 years from now, they might have cared about continuity errors. Ha ha I think its funny this took place in our past 2005, but in the future in 1985. That kinda messes with your head. Optimous is creepy with his optical sensor exposed. Freeked me out as a kid!
You'll also notice that at 1:47, his face has the lines in it as Rodimus instead of Hot Rod. But at 4:48, the lines are missing, even though he has the Matrix back.

EVEn with out the matrix he beated Optimus it was a clear fight.Optimus having the martix hes weapons despite this he lost.Rodimus must have a more stable self attitude and he can beat anybody.Megarton galvatron or any other transformer.

I still dont know.I started to read the uk marvel comic transformers and there is an info wich suggest that prime actually stronger then galvatron....And the logical thing is that Galvatron is stronger then hes original self MEGATRON.
So i was a little confused who is the boss around.For example when ultra magnus is in that mood even he was able to beat galvatron.At least once this happen in the comic books(uk version).So i wasnt sure who is strong or who is weak..

On the other hand in the tv serie he power shifting.For example in the dark awekening he was able to harm Galvatron!And that was a very big thing.Galvatron is nearlys unstopabble and a half dead prime injuring him very much.For me the logical answer is that the Q 's upgraded hes weapon.
There is another problem Cyclonus and scourge how strong they are?And why Habsbro didn't make a king of power list.It worked to the dragonball.

@gun844 that was the beauty of Hot Rod's story arc - growing from a party loving kid that never dreamed he would be anything, to becoming that stable, confident leader of the Autobots. I love Optimus and as a kid the 2 part Return was my favorite episodes, but Hot Rod gets way too much hate. Ya gotta respect him.

@ademonandangel According to the writers, this episode was to make clear to fans that Optimus Prime was gone for good. At this point they had no intentions of bringing him back for good until the massive fan outcry over his death in the movie made them reconsider. This episode, poor animation quality aside was my favorite from this season and probably the darkest of the whole series IMO

I kind of thought of this episode as a slap to the face. Hasbro brought back our most beloved transformer... Only to kill him again. We had to wait for the series finale to see Optimus brought back for good.

To Rodimus haters: The intent behind having a kid (Hot Rod) "grow up" to be the leader of the Autobots is to tell a story of hardship, uncertainty, and ultimately growth and maturity. It was Rodimus' destiny to become a grand leader, and in this episode he took his first step in that direction. "Optimus! Front and center! I'm taking command." These are the words of a good, strong leader. Because G1 ended shortly after this, though, Rodimus never got the chance to show us what he could do.

@davidr64yt I personally think Rodimus was poorly written in season 3. At the end of the 86 movie, he was confident and headstrong . The writers of season 3 made him look like a total wuss and ready to give up at any sign of pressure. It's unfortunate because he did have a few good moments and add the backlash over Optimus Prime's death and they never did give him a chance to grow as a leader.

@davidr64yt No the problem was there was no character development of hot rod going into the TF movie,which is why many hate him. Optimus was around from day 1,yet HR debuts in the movie and gets to become leader. It's nothing more than "here's the new guy,like him"kind of deal.

It's a good thing they were already developing season 3 as Transformers: The Movie came out. If they knew about the fuzz surrounding Optimus' death in the movie beforehand, I don't think this very best G1 episode would exist.

Lol, Blur...The Micro Machine man. I see they had Ultra Magnus wearing a bit of lipstick at the end there. It's been about 20, 21 years,but I knew I watched an episode of him dying a second time once before. Most memorable episode for me. Well that and Metroplex losing his eyes for Unicron.

I know it sucks for many to have the Quints desecrate the Autobots' dead in such a manner, especially Optimus Prime. The only positive results I see is that it shows how much of a sadistic bastard the Quints are and how serious a threat they are to the galaxy.
And finally, this would hopefully shake up Rodimus's reality into taking the leadership mores seriously that he would actually do a better job in the future.

@tokoat983 The first time the episode aired, it didn't have the voice-over at the end. They replayed it again at the end of the season, right before The Return of Optimus Prime, and added the narration that time to lead into Prime's return. It was a big deal, I remember them showing these "alerts" at the end of episodes leading up to it, telling everyone that Prime was coming back.

For all those kids who were already traumatized by Prime getting killed off in the movie, this episode was nothing but rubbing salt in a too fresh wound (episode aired basically one month after the movie was released). Showing a crappily animated Prime with half his face blown off was quite tasteful too. Hot Rod's little hurried faux eulogy at the end of it made me hate him even more. They tried to legitimize and cement Hot Rod's leadership in this episode, but only made you want Prime back more

anyone besides me pissed that they basically killed off all the good original transformers(wheeljack, rachet, huffer, brawn, ironhide to name a few) AGAIN and then went and killed skyfire, who was awesome. seriously, the movie and all the episodes after it suck b/c all thay do is kill off all of the good original ones. JEEZ!!!! it so sad....i miss them. :'(

Where did you get this version of the episode? The Rhino DVD I have doesn't have the original ending where there is no narrator hinting at Optimus Prime's return at the end of the season.
This version has Rhinos new sound FX but the original ending?

Also you know the real reson, prime and many of the other autobots did not return, they could not afford the actors. They probably wanted more money after the movie came out. Esecially after working with Lenord Nemoy in the movie and several others that were well known. Casey casem. Yo Jo, it changed about the same time as GI Joe the movie I think.

@drewmichael25 Actually Scatman Crothers (the voice of Jazz) unfortunately died after to movie was released. And Casey Kasem (voice of Cliffjumper and Teletran 1) quit the show due to his objections to the way the show portrayed the middle east (since he was of middle eastern descent)

What the hell, rodimus shrunk and turned back into hotrod after giving optimus prime back the matrix of leadership. But then when he fights optimus prime he is rodimus prime again and he is tall once more, before ever recieving the matrix of leadership back, get the f-ck out of here lol. It was the 80's nobody cared about that stuff, especially in cartoons back then. But really, transformers is bad for continuity errors even by those standards. Just look at scenes with the seekers in it, you constantly get the starscreams voice for thundercraker and skywarps voice coming from starscream. Not to mention the color errors. It really is a mess.

I agree, back in the 800's you couldn't rewind or pause TV, and this was not out on VHS until later, still hard to pause. Watch airwolf and Knight Rider, awsome show, but so many flaws. If they Only knew the technology we would have 20 years from now, they might have cared about continuity errors. Ha ha I think its funny this took place in our past 2005, but in the future in 1985. That kinda messes with your head. Optimous is creepy with his optical sensor exposed. Freeked me out as a kid!

You'll also notice that at 1:47, his face has the lines in it as Rodimus instead of Hot Rod. But at 4:48, the lines are missing, even though he has the Matrix back.
