Great to see a director who is intelligently talking about film. Go listen to an interview with Michael Bay or M. Night Shyamalan and compare it to this one. It really clarifies why they make mediocre films and he makes stellar ones.

@grindhouse141 interesting you put it that way. but if you watch paul anderson's films, you will see that they are extremely deep, paul anderson has like a natural affinity for complex human themes. like in there will be blood, where he puts human greed to the test, and paul anderson has the slow methodical camera style like kubrick, anderson is a technical aeutuer. but nolan has a brilliant visual flare, but he lacks the affinity of complex themes. IMAGINE, if we mixed both their talents..LOL.

@malows1234 I agree with you about the PTA part but I think Nolan is too often trivialized as a filmmaker who's all about style and no substance. An insult also frequently leveled at Quentin Tarantino. I think that's an unfair criticism and it misrepresents Nolan's films. Yes, his films are indeed visually arresting but there's much more too them than that. It's said that his films lack feeling or heart but the same could be said for David Fincher, but no one criticizes him for that.

@grindhouse141 well social network had a lot of heart to it for sure, but i agree that finchers other films lack emotional complexity. The prestige or even insomnia are films that have some what of a human heart, and dont rely on convoluted storytelling mechanics like memento or inception. now i still think memento is a masterpeice, but just saying. after i left the theater from inception, i was just like, its a dream or it isn't. THAT WAS the only thing i got out of the movie. no emotional con

@malows1234 Actually I think TSN is one of the most emotionally chilling films Fincher has made. I don't think Inception "relies on convoluted storytelling mechanics." The story is indeed very complex but I don't think he relies on that. I mean in truth you could say the exact same thing about 2001: A Space Odyssey. There is absolutely no emotion in that film, yet it's very complex. I don't think a film NEEDS to have some great emotional theme.Actually that's something Nolan & Kubrick both share

@grindhouse141 your right about kubrick and nolan being emotionally distant.but think about it, 2001 asks questions and haunts us about what the heck human intellect at the end leads us to. inception was thought provoking for about the first 20 minutes when they dealt with how we concieve dreams, but after that it had absolutely nothing thought provoking, they just jump deeper into dreams out of some convoluted plot, and at the end of the day it was just a platform for a huge summer blockbuster.
