Right from the start I would have liked to see Robert get up while he's still playing; punch that guy's lights out, open the top of the piano and stuff his head in there, and then continue to play Mary Poppin's as his limp body hangs out.
Sounds great but I don't think this is what you call rag ( maybe a few parts of what he played but defenitely not everything ). But it sounds great anyway!
The fact that park patrons have posted glowing comments about his youtube videos show that they can't tell the difference, and the management of the park doesn't seem to care...so I guess what he is doing, though not appropriate, is good enough.
Robert uses harmonies and voicings that are too modern for the period of the environment of Main St. USA. And a few token Jo Ann Castle/honky-tonk licks don't hide the fact that he plays sophisticated cocktail piano that would be better suited for a West Hollywood cabaret instead of a turn of the century main street.
Robert seems like not only a first rate musician but also a nice guy. He is probably the best musician playing this gig, and may be one of the best musicians ever to play the refreshment corner at Disneyland. The way he is playing, however, is not right for this gig. Coke Corner has always featured ballsy piano roll inspired piano playing. Whether it is a rag, song or latest Disney tune, all of them have been played in style that evokes the spirit of the ragtime era.
Interesting! I'm a musician but know almost nothing about ragtime. From what I could tell, yes, everyone seemed pretty into it and didn't know the difference, either. Also, you're right that he's a nice guy! He talked to my brother and I about auditioning for Disneyland music performances.
