  • after when it crystallizes (end of video), is it going to be hot?

  • Has anyone made a crystal meth joke yet?

  • MAGIC

  • I want to take this liquid, rig a system to suspend the seed so it can be raised and lowered, and then lower it into the liquid, pulling it slowly out. I expect some fun formations might occur!

  • ice breakers. liquid ice

  • is that related to supercooling?

  • isn't the test tube hot? You should use a test tube holder!

  • Isn't this the stuff in reusable hand warmers?

  • science is scary !!!

  • y the song made me sad? :(

  • OK, I am one of those thick skulled, jock types. So, what am I looking at and why should I get excited? Thanks.

  • OOO SO THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE METH THANKS MAN

  • what's up with the music haha. that was different.

  • Rodrigo's Aranjuez FTW

  • where i can buy sodium thiosulfate?

  • I have some sodium thiosulfate from a pool store that I bought when isolating bromine, but I do not believe its pentahydrate. Would dissolving it in water and letting that crystallize hydrate what I have?

  • Heating in your hand? Health and safety?

  • thats such an amazing thing to watch, very beautiful

  • That is very cool. I always like these kind of experiments. Especially ones you can watch change before your eyes

  • what music is this?

  • I could be wrong, but isn't that a supercooled liquid? Unless it was dissolved in water. Anyhow, pretty cool!

  • IT'S ICE 9! HE'S GONE AND DONE IT!

  • I'm amazed at how you melted an ionic compound, but yes I suppose it's possible.

  • That was beautiful. You did a good job filming the final crystallization.

  • where do you buy that sodium stuff

  • what gaz are you using for that flame? how hot is it?

  • salt...?

  • the sodium thiosulfate was heated, the molecules stated to vibrate more and more until a state of disorder was reached. when placed on the plate it started to cool and small ions started to nucleated because they where not vibrating as much until a seed was formed and rapid crystallization occurred. my question is was it evaporating on the dish?

  • ooh old CHM 1046

  • It's INSTA-ICE! :D

  • this is awesome . where can i buy this thigs

  • Is this Sodium Thiosulfate Anydrous? or is it a trihydrate form? if its a trihydrate form, does anyone know how to convert the two?

  • @viper7ryan this is the pentahydrate form!

  • whats the seed crystal made of?

  • @Pivoteer24 sodium thiosulfate also

  • If you have a supersaturated solution with more than 1 salt dissolved, will the less soluble one crystallize out?

  • What does supersaturated mean, just melted? And is this experiment dangerous?

  • @nirvanafan7777 increasing the concentration of (a solution) beyond saturation point. this is not what happens in this video.

  • @speedball2345 if that's not what happens in this video, then what does happen?

  • @nirvanafan7777 Its just melted down not supersaturated

  • whats the name of the song?

  • your music makes me feel sad for the sodium thiosulfate poor Na2S2O3 boo woo sniffle

  • @shaolincrest I agree, the video should have had happy music to celebrate the life of the Sodium. :'-(

  • Why does it crystalize from the center at the start, but then, without the crystalization reaching the edge of the dish, it starts to crystalize from the edge of the dish into the centre colliding with the crystalization pattern coming from the middle?

  • This is a great experment to show the classroom! Excellent! thanks for sharing! Please use a tube holder....lol I worry about people burning their fingers!!! :)

  • hahaha, what a funny troll

  • cool!!

  • Hmmm you are supposed to use a test-tube holder to hold the hot test tube.

  • That just looks like molten sodium thiosulfate, not a saturated soln.

  • ...its just by heating???????

  • I have a question. Why is it that during half of the crystallization process, there are some crystals forming around the edge of the dish, where the sodium thiosulfate isn't touching the seed crystal?

  • When you have a supersaturated solution it crystallizes on its own even if you just leave it in the dish. We added the seed crystal only to show how it works + its much faster and more obvious.

  • @Khoonda88 could be "arching" underneath due to gravity perhaps

  • Awesome, but what the hell is it :)?

  • Never mind just remembered its that stuff you put in hand warmers

  • so the temperature raised? o.o'

  • Ya it gets hotter

  • It's Na2S2O3. It's used a lot as the fixing agent in photographic development, although it's more commonly seen as a pentahydrate, called Sodium hyposulfite or "hypo".

  • You're kinda 6 months late since I already figured what it was.

  • Ohh... is that what "hypo clear" is? I took photography last year, but never really knew what that was :)

  • What this music?

    I Like it!

  • music not needed, but cool video, next time loose the music please...

  • its good music foo!!!

  • whats the music

  • Shouldn't that tube be held by something other than bare hands, (albeit surgical gloves) Kids, use a clamp if you wish to attempt this. That said, it was enjoyable to watch :)

  • It took less than 50 sec to melt the whole quantity. If you are not familiar with holding a test tube for that long, not even a clamp would help :-)

  • @ChemToddler lmoa <3 it!!!

  • @ChemToddler <3 it!!! funniest thing i heard all day
