I want to take this liquid, rig a system to suspend the seed so it can be raised and lowered, and then lower it into the liquid, pulling it slowly out. I expect some fun formations might occur!
I have some sodium thiosulfate from a pool store that I bought when isolating bromine, but I do not believe its pentahydrate. Would dissolving it in water and letting that crystallize hydrate what I have?
the sodium thiosulfate was heated, the molecules stated to vibrate more and more until a state of disorder was reached. when placed on the plate it started to cool and small ions started to nucleated because they where not vibrating as much until a seed was formed and rapid crystallization occurred. my question is was it evaporating on the dish?
Why does it crystalize from the center at the start, but then, without the crystalization reaching the edge of the dish, it starts to crystalize from the edge of the dish into the centre colliding with the crystalization pattern coming from the middle?
This is a great experment to show the classroom! Excellent! thanks for sharing! Please use a tube holder....lol I worry about people burning their fingers!!! :)
I have a question. Why is it that during half of the crystallization process, there are some crystals forming around the edge of the dish, where the sodium thiosulfate isn't touching the seed crystal?
When you have a supersaturated solution it crystallizes on its own even if you just leave it in the dish. We added the seed crystal only to show how it works + its much faster and more obvious.
It's Na2S2O3. It's used a lot as the fixing agent in photographic development, although it's more commonly seen as a pentahydrate, called Sodium hyposulfite or "hypo".
Shouldn't that tube be held by something other than bare hands, (albeit surgical gloves) Kids, use a clamp if you wish to attempt this. That said, it was enjoyable to watch :)
after when it crystallizes (end of video), is it going to be hot?

I could be wrong, but isn't that a supercooled liquid? Unless it was dissolved in water. Anyhow, pretty cool!

I'm amazed at how you melted an ionic compound, but yes I suppose it's possible.

That was beautiful. You did a good job filming the final crystallization.

Is this Sodium Thiosulfate Anydrous? or is it a trihydrate form? if its a trihydrate form, does anyone know how to convert the two?

@viper7ryan this is the pentahydrate form!

If you have a supersaturated solution with more than 1 salt dissolved, will the less soluble one crystallize out?
BogMonkey53 1 year ago
What does supersaturated mean, just melted? And is this experiment dangerous?
nirvanafan7777 1 year ago
@nirvanafan7777 increasing the concentration of (a solution) beyond saturation point. this is not what happens in this video.
speedball2345 1 year ago
@speedball2345 if that's not what happens in this video, then what does happen?
nirvanafan7777 1 year ago
@nirvanafan7777 Its just melted down not supersaturated

It took less than 50 sec to melt the whole quantity. If you are not familiar with holding a test tube for that long, not even a clamp would help :-)
