That French movie (1935) was banned in the USA because Baker had a love affair with a white guy... See the superb BBC documentary "Josephine Baker : the First Black Superstar" avaliable on YouTube. What a woman!!!
For Buffeddivo who ask "Damn, why don't nightclubs like that exist anymore?!", I can only answer : go to Paris! ;-) The three big clubs like that are the Folies bergères, the Lido and the Crazy Horse Saloon (several small ones).
this video is great, because it shows baker as an elegant girl, not a pickaninny; she makes really elegant and powerfull moves;she strips, though the audience is portrayed as too inhibited to handle it.Look at the adjacent "interview" and you see she was bulletproof.
this movie is about a black african girl, who is taken by a french guy to france. he calls her princess tam tram. at nights she dances in french cabaret. she makes me laugh when she meets french culture. ceci binda - argentina
Well since "The Little Mermaid" was in 1989 and this movie was made in the 1920s...I would say Disney ripped the tune off of here...they tend to do that alot...
exactly what I thought...and it def. is. Alan Menken (the supposed composer of that song) got an academy award for best "original" song for under the sea. what a scam!
A genuine performance from the REAL Josephine Baker! That was the only job she could dancing in France because the US was so discrimnating against her and almost all African Americans!
I don't know why they always characterized her with Afro-Cubano music because she as born in the US
Both "Princess Tam Tam"(1935) and "Zou Zou"(1934) are available on DVD, published by Kino. Nowadays, you don't stand much of a chance of finding a retailer who would sell these films. (Borders once sold them; look in the foreign films section) You will have to go online, either Amazon or Ebay. Do get them! I can just watch them over and over again! I also enjoy skipping to the musical parts!

Progressive thinking woman. Well maybe African dance is progressive and the more western influence the more conservative dance has become?..

I remember seeing Princess Tam-Tam years ago and this is the best part of the movie.
Josephine's film character rebels against her Pygmalion-like culture lessons and reverts back to her unbridled, liberated behavior.
Certainly works for the viewer's benefit.

Listen to the music beginning about 1:43. Blow me down if that isn't the verse from "Under the Sea" in Disney's "Little Mermaid."
