  • Ray Charles has a lot of amazing songs (in fact, I have yet to here a Ray Charles song that's even pleasantly mediocre, let alone bad), but if I had to choose a favorite, it'd be this one. 6 and 1/2 minutes of genius.

  • @catpizza3 Still 0!

  • My mother fed me this in the early 60's; she was hip. Later in life I decided that the perfect jazz combo was keyboard, drums, bass. Now I guess I hear again where it hit my subconscious in upbeat soul earlier. The rhythms, the keys quality, vocals (ladies!), warm bass work.... could it be better? And it's fun; I gotta' move!

  • @MrDarwinsDog ??????????? WTF ??????????????? WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS M/F TALKIN' ABOUT - DOES ANYBODY UNDERSTAND THIS FUCKIN' IDIOT ?????? LOL - WTF ???? Well, least now we know hy he don't have a job !! Yo - as long as you movin' - I hear that Ethiopia is "Nice", and you get a lot for the money too, man !!!

I remember playing this on guitar back in 8th grade for a concert

    Good times, good times......

  • WATUTSI TIME

  • "Listen, I'm going to fool around and y'all just follow me." - Ray Charles to the Raelettes, when filling in a spare 12 minutes at the end of a gig. The result? 'What'd I Say' and 'the Birth of Soul Music' - fabulous!

  • The 'Birth of Soul Music' - fabulous!

  • If you don't like this throw your ears out cause they don't work.

  • @Funnydego i love that, you are fucking on the money. GOD BLESS. PBM-300

  • Thanks for posting this classic. The sheet music for Ray Charles' "What'd I Say" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm

  • Absolutely a brilliant classic tune that sooo uplifting for the soul!!!!!!!

  • cooler than ice....

  • Ray, What'd I say!

  • I just wan't to say that he's a "Genius". . .

  • And I thought I was the coolest thing coming out of 1959! (heh heh heh!) This does cook for sure. Ray was genius!

  • i love that intro "masterpiece"

  • Hey Debs.

  • THE MAN

  • some of the finest notes ever recorded. compliments from a blind man.

    Mr. Ray Charles!

  • It must have been very exciting to hear this on the radio when it was brand new. I listen to it now and its amazing but it probably would have been more so if I was listening to it as if it had it been released yesterday.

  • @FGWRostaman Actually this was recorded in 1958.

  • i love ray charles!!!

  • I think this was the first 45 I ever bought - the opening riff excites me just as much now as over 50 years ago when I first heard it on a tiny transster radio. And side two is just as good as side one!

  • MY BLACK BETHOVEEN !

  • the 284602th time ive listened to this song since tenth grade

  • THIS IS SARA AND DADS SONG

  • directo del piano de su majestad Charles

  • SIMPLY THE BEGINNING OF EVERY MUSIC TODAY THE LATE GREAT MR. RAY CHARLES " WHAT'D I SAY" RIP

  • sounds like the intro to break on through.

  • @edn172 I noticed, it's similar to that jazzy/bossa nova-ish drumming from Break On Through (To The Other Side). The melody also has a similar sound.

  • @BasementBeginnings I never thought about that. Good ear!

  • @BasementBeginnings Actually, on Classic Albums, Robbie Ray Manzarek admitted that the piano riff for Break On Through was pretty much ripped off of What'd I Say.

  • @DORKYBA55ATTACK Yeah, I've seen that. Someone in the band (maybe Mazarek) admitted as well that the guitar in Soul Kitchen was inspired from James Brown.

  • he is the king of soul jazz bluse R&B country he can sing what ever he want and is it all good !!!!!!!!

RIP ray charles you fans still <3 you!!!!!!

  • Un seul Ray et des centaines de Johnny "Khalliday!!"( Khalli= Empty )

Nous vivons un monde "merdiatique!!"Isn't it ?
