Ray Charles has a lot of amazing songs (in fact, I have yet to here a Ray Charles song that's even pleasantly mediocre, let alone bad), but if I had to choose a favorite, it'd be this one. 6 and 1/2 minutes of genius.
@LxGTh3rMiCzZ everything you stated is bs this is satans music and you just cannot face the facts you're done I have summed you up and got you figured out.
This was the very first record I owned as a child, I was 9years old and thought that this was the greatest song ever performed! I still rank it up in my top 20 favorite songs of all-time! it's a classic!
My mother fed me this in the early 60's; she was hip. Later in life I decided that the perfect jazz combo was keyboard, drums, bass. Now I guess I hear again where it hit my subconscious in upbeat soul earlier. The rhythms, the keys quality, vocals (ladies!), warm bass work.... could it be better? And it's fun; I gotta' move!
@MrDarwinsDog ??????????? WTF ??????????????? WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS M/F TALKIN' ABOUT - DOES ANYBODY UNDERSTAND THIS FUCKIN' IDIOT ?????? LOL - WTF ???? Well, least now we know hy he don't have a job !! Yo - as long as you movin' - I hear that Ethiopia is "Nice", and you get a lot for the money too, man !!!
"Listen, I'm going to fool around and y'all just follow me." - Ray Charles to the Raelettes, when filling in a spare 12 minutes at the end of a gig. The result? 'What'd I Say' and 'the Birth of Soul Music' - fabulous!
Thanks for posting this classic. The sheet music for Ray Charles' "What'd I Say" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.

It must have been very exciting to hear this on the radio when it was brand new. I listen to it now and its amazing but it probably would have been more so if I was listening to it as if it had it been released yesterday.
I think this was the first 45 I ever bought - the opening riff excites me just as much now as over 50 years ago when I first heard it on a tiny transster radio. And side two is just as good as side one!
@BasementBeginnings Actually, on Classic Albums, Robbie Ray Manzarek admitted that the piano riff for Break On Through was pretty much ripped off of What'd I Say.
@DORKYBA55ATTACK Yeah, I've seen that. Someone in the band (maybe Mazarek) admitted as well that the guitar in Soul Kitchen was inspired from James Brown.

Dear Ray,
If you're somewhere seeing this somehow, I just wanted you to know, people are still listening to this in 2012, and still think it's baddass.

@edn172 I noticed, it's similar to that jazzy/bossa nova-ish drumming from Break On Through (To The Other Side). The melody also has a similar sound.
