  • that is very violent

  • HAHAHA!! im gonna do this in our BIOCHEM AND DDS. :)))

  • :)

  • LMAO this happened today in my chemistry class - only it went off before they added water or even got it outside. Now the entire building's full of purple gas and smells like pool water!!!!!!!

  • Isn't this what Ninjas use to escape a bad situation?

  • Io is a moon, and my friend is named dean

  • totes put that in someones coffee

  • That's really cool :)

  • Iodine can be pronounced with either a long e or long i sound. The same way aluminum could be aluminium. Sulphur instead of sulfur.

Just depends on which hemisphere you are on.

  • Do some people pronounce iodine like they pronounce chlorine/fluorine/bromine? What is the correct pronounciation?

  • @vmelkon ya but u say tomato i say tomaato kind of thing

  • @vmelkon I'm from NEW ZEALAND> We pronounce it io-dean

  • Io-dean?

  • ...a list of compounds like the periodic table?

  • yea i kind of get that now, as in just iodine not watered down with something or anything ok makes sense.

what im saying is does the h2o stay as that or do and H or O2 join the gas that is released? i'm guessing the without water example is the scientific equivilent of diet beer or you wouldn't be so sure it is only a catalyst and think I have NO clue as to what i'm talking about. I admit im rusty right now lol.

I havent been in a lab for years, I forget most compounds :( is there...

  • wwhhhoooaaahhh sshhiitt

  • Where did these videos come from?

  • What was the chemical produced after the chemical reaction? Is it a toxic or an irritant?

  • toxic

  • what do you mean, the purple gas? thats actually iodine gas, because the heat of the reaction makes some of it subliminate.

the actual product is zinc iodide.

  • 0:27 H2O?

  • yep, so this isn't I2 and ZN as stated but an iodine zinc water reaction. so obviously we ask, what happens without water?

and what the heck is elemental iodine, what does that mean in science terms??

someone do this again but properly...

  • if you knew anything, youd know that the water is used as a sort of catalyst, as it increases reaction time. it isnt in the equation, and the same thing happens without the water, just slower,

haha. oh my god. do you know anything? all it means is that its in its elemental form. so it isnt in a compound, or an ion. and that is a science term.

for example, elemental sodium is extremely reactive in water and air, but sodium compounds (like salt) dont do this. i thought that was obvious.

  • try that with bromine XD

  • try that with fluorine :S

  • that was sweet

  • are the fumes toxic?

  • at least a bit just a little les worse than chlorine or brom (was both used as war gases in II WW)

but ot that worse toxic just dont breath it its corrosive

  • bromine as a poison gas? that would have been the most expensive chemical in the battlefield..... not to mention that it is a liquid ;)

  • well they dont used it but ofc they tryed, its liquid but just take a look at the vapor pressure at romm themperature

  • About its wapour pressure: I suppose they don't asked the enemy to come over and sniff some bromine vapours, Its derivatives what were used.

  • Bromine

In the war 1914-1918 this elemnt had a very limited use as a war gas. It was only used together with chlorine in order to increase the persistence of the latter but according to some authors^6 could be used alone if carried in special bombs.

    Owned?^^

  • not really :]

as you said it used together with chloride, it reacts with chloride to form Bromine chloride wich is indeed a poison gas, if something could have been used it doesn't actually mean it was used, sorry to persevere to my point, maybe a draw hmm? :)

  • well, agree its a good point for a stop,

    yes it is

  • interestingly that purple gas isn't zinc iodide, its gaseous iodine that has vaporized due to the large amount of heat...

  • Yeah. The first time i saw metal+iodine, it was a bit disconcerting.

  • Very, Very nice

  • ¿just water and voilá? nice...

  • Cool

  • YOU'RE BORING!
