  • I heard the 10,000 maniacs on my first real system and man I was blown away by the instruments and Natalies voice, I am a black woman that love's her style of music some of my friends have never listened to this type of music before, and now they've become fans as well love you Natalie Merchant.

  • I saw Natalie interviewed by the NYT not long ago as part of their artist series. She happened to drop this little gem...when auditioning for the maniacs, unknown to her, someone spiked her drink with acid. She said she was completely stoned and has no idea why she was chosen. Maybe atw247 knows!

  • no one like you baby

  • Man...she is in her own world......

    Love her!

  • I wish i could of been there!!!This is my favorite Maniacs song i love the album version but the live performances are my favorite and the M.T.V Unplugged performance of is my favorite one.she is looking so good in this video i will love Natalie for life.

  • no one is sexier .....no one...

  • great song, great version. sort of surprised she shaved her armpits!

  • I miss her voice with the Maniacs. Neither one is the same anymore.

  • atw247 You are one lucky and talented man to have been able to have played with Natalie and the Maniacs..It's a shame that Buck passed away...Love Natalie's work.and her...

  • Natalie is a unique, highly intelligent and extremely talented individual with a great sense of humor ,it was an honor to perform with her on a nightly basis.

  • lucky man i would have loved to spend time with her.

  • Yes the violinist is Morgan Fichter not Mary Ramsey and thats Amanda Kramer on keyboards and backing vocals..I was one of the sax players who toured with 10k during this time ..and I played this show.

  • Beautiful...Simple... Fresh...Happy......Brilliant !!

From Hwaii : thanx you Nat .luv u

  • How is possible that one as this exists? So full of life, singing with such elation and not a trace of pretension. As easily and naturally as if she were a child singing in the shower with no one home, yet hitting every note exactly as it should be.

  • @indysebastian This is one of the Maniacs' happier songs. heh

Lots of their others are pretty grim while sounding happy.

  • I just saw that WOW How Fake!

  • This is by far the best song, in my opinion

  • lol, yeah

  • This song is "Stockton Gala Days". Who ever posted this needs to add the title.

  • Wow this song is exhausting to sing.

  • she is beautiful

  • she brings tears to meyes...hard to say why...i dont think anyone comes clost to her words....morresey is the only aryist that comes to mind

  • That is a good comparison, thinking about it you maybe right.

  • agree 100% - never seen or heard anyone sing with that kind of passion.

  • Comment removed

  • i've always been curious about the lyrics to this song - is she talking to her past self?

  • this was in 1993? that would mean natalie would have been 30 in this film. she looks much younger. my guess this film in circa 1988.

  • Yes it was 1993. If you watch other Youtube videos you will see Natalie has longer hair early in January 1993 if you watch the 10,000 Maniacs MTV inaugural Ball videos. Afterwords, she cut her hair as seen in this video or in the 10,000 Maniacs MTV unplugged videos which was filmed later on in 1993.

  • I've seen The Maniacs many times and can remember seeing them in a small club in Bloomington, Indiana called Second Story. The crowd was so close to Natalie that she asked everyone to move back from the microphone. She ended up sitting on the drum riser and read lyrics from a spiral notebook. A great show nonetheless!

  • Beautiful performance,

but I also must seriously give the Camera operator big RESPECT!

    Very nicely taped!

  • it's amazing how she spins that much, and she dances, and she keeps on singing like the world has no end at all. What's not to love about her?

  • she used to spin even more wildly... i was at a concert where she fell off the stage in lexington 1984... she slowed down after that.. i have a pic of mike stipe and pete buck helping her to the bus afterward... but she finished the show that night regardless of her injury.

  • Dude.. thats awsome ... Mike stipe and her together even in '84 !!!

  • Rob is never seen in this video... but I can damn listen to his magic guitar.

    I miss 10,000 maniacs a lot

  • I went to college in Fredonia when the Maniacs were first starting out (early 80's). I had Mary Ramsey's father as an English Professor. (Mary is playing the violin in this video and later replaced Natalie as lead singer in 10,000 Maniacs). She also used to record with John Lombardo (original Maniac) as "John and Mary."

  • i'd love to see these guys live. they should reunite.

  • They never broke up.... per say....

    They've been "inactive" since 2007.

Last I knew Steve was working at a community college and I'm not sure about the rest of them.

  • Love Natalie in this, what a treasure.

  • The violinist is Mary Ramsey who went on to replace Natalie Merchant as lead singer. I really like the sound she added to the 10k maniacs.

  • Respectful correction. Violinist is Morgan Fitcher. She rocks.

  • I am reasonbly certain that Mary Ramsey played violin on the "eden" album in studio. I am not sure if she has played live with the Maniacs.

  • Mary Ramsey did play "live" with the Maniacs for the MTV Unplugged taping.

  • Great song. Great Album. The violin kills this performance.... is that the same violinist that ruins the Indigo Girls in their live performances? She's Sooooo self indulgent and riffs to the wrong chords a lot. Natalie Merchant rules though.

  • Oh, I love the violin! My wife (a professional musicologist of international renown, so she knows her stuff) disagrees about the "wrong chords" claim, but I guess if it sounds wrong to you it sounds wrong. In general, though, this is one of the most joyous songs I know, and this is an incredibly joyous performance.

  • I'm replying to my own post, because I just re-read it and realise that talking about "international renown" made me sound like a complete arse. Sorry!

  • Hold thy forked tongue!! 10000 Maniacs was (and still is) my favorite band.

  • I am blown away everytime I see Natalie, with 10,000 Maniacs and Solo. 10,000 Maniacs is my favorite band and Natalie is my favorite artist. I think she is the greatest artist that ever lived!! That voice, lyrics, you name it. And she is beautiful.

  • Frustrating to only see Natalie and no band members. Why?

  • Well... lucky all of you that can replay all those nice long gone moments, as you were part of them.

For many of us that dont know what means 10,000 Maniacs in a live performance.

And maybe we never be able to enjoy that as many of you did.

Thank you for sharing it with us.

This song it had to be released as single of that master work called "our time in Eden"

    ¡¡¡10,000 Maniacs por siempre!!!

  • If we bred her to Michael Stipe would the baby ever be able to walk in a straight line? But the little bugger would sing its ass off!

  • She has a baby... no idea who the father is or even if she adopted vs. gave birth. Come to think of it it's entirely possible she DOESN'T have a baby and it was just a prank. But a few years back she claimed on her website that she had a child now.

  • This is a very, very cool clip. I was in college in 1993, and this brings back so many memories. Thanks for posting it.

  • This concert was at a club called Mississippi Nights in St. Louis. The venue only held a few hundred people and it was recently torn down to make way for a new casino. What a shame. Natalie Merchant is a truly special talent.

  • No, it was a the Riverfront Ampitheatre. I was there. It was a great show. They appeared on David Letterman the very next night. I remember it well. Especially all the chigger bites I got because Natalie threw a fit about the lawn guys putting down bug killer.

  • it was riverport ampitheatre.

  • LOL. Like Morrissey not allowing anyone to sell meat at any of his concerts. Although interesting, nice that they believe in something.

  • Natalie Merchant is no longer a strict vegetarian. She started to eat meat again when she was pregnant for the protein.

  • how does it feel when u listen to a song or to a band that u used to listen all the time for a period of your life but then somehow it was erased from yr memory?i havent listened them for ages...what a feeling............

  • This comes from the album OUR TIME IN EDEN, one of me Desert Island favorites, one of those few albums I can listen to all day long, no matter if resting, studying, or cleaning house. Of course, the album includes THESE ARE DAYS, one of the most evocative songs you'll ever hear. But the whole album succeeds! Go out and get it!

  • irado meu estou muito tempo atraz dest videos 10,000 so um fa alucinado tem noçao??????????

  • she must have so many people in love with her..

  • This is one of my favorite Natalie clips. Getting a little bit of a work out.

  • im so suprised that the comments are weeks and months apart i have to see nat about every day to keep my sannity

  • Saw her at Lehigh University close to 15 yrs ago. I hope she tours again. Heard she's in NYC for a 6 nite show.

  • *S* Natalie rocks!

  • wow ive been looking 4 this song4 13yrs

  • 10,000 maniacs one of my all time favourite bands,,,natalies voice is so unique

  • There can be only 1 10000 maniacs and thats with Nat. Love her voice and face very happy

  • I LOVE U NATALIE 4 EVER!!!!!!

  • Yeah, she is easy on the eyes. I actually like the band better with Mary. Oskar is a little tough to take though she sings great. The guy taking Bucks role on guitar is extremely talented. His name escapes me. Heard his earlier work. Having said all that, this band is toast unless Natalie comes back.

  • She's soooo good. "Verdi Cries" is probably my favorite.

  • I've heard her recent music and her voice sounds the same to me, but some hear differently. If you compare many singers voices to their earlier days you'll hear some kind of difference naturally, but it doesn't necessarily mean the quality of their voice is lacking. Go to her site and listen to "Everyday is Like Sunday"(from the most recent album "Campfire Songs" and see how good she still sounds.

  • There is NO BETTER voice on this PLANET than Natalie's!!!! Natalie, you RULE!!

  • But have you heard her recently? Something nasty has happened. She sounds like she's been chewing barbed wire. It may be age and motherhood affecting the pipes

  • Nope, haven't heard ANY of her recent stuff but if what you say is correct,to hear such a wonderful, beautiful voice like hers come un-done is a REAL tragedy!Wouldn't you agree?

  • well it's 'matured' Joni Mitchell has gone pretty croaky too, but she is a lot older.

  • I loved 10,000 Maniacs. I was never to crazy about Natalie Merchant's solo stuff. Where can I get the full length of this concert?

  • Oh, my.......she's soooo beautiful.

  • look above. the name of the song is stockton gala days from the album our time in eden.

  • what's the name of this song??? love Natalie , and love this song..

  • the tittle is Stockton gala days

  • One of their greatest songs, although that list is rather long.
