The start of all the Uk's problems , no jobs , no future , 5 years later these reas were full of young kids with guns selling drugs, as for them smoking , about 60p for a pack of 20 back then
The Scholl siblings, brother and sister Hans and Sophie Scholl, were members of the White Rose, a student group in Munich that was active in the non-violent resistance movement in Nazi Germany, especially in distributing flyers against the war and the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler.they were caught. By February 22, 1943, they had been sentenced to death by the People's Court, were executed by Guillotine on the same day in the Stadelheim Prison. Students
@treguard1982 what are you on about? In the 80's these people did work but Margaret Thatcher shut down all cole mines and ship yards, these people tried looking for jobs. Back then it was even harder to find a job like it is today. Today, these horrible dolies should have a stop to having kids but back in the 80's, you didn't work then you didn't earn!
Think they should bring in population control. Some things may work e.g if you have never worked/no intention of working ten you can't have children. Honestly think a birth licence would save the country from overpopulation and breed out the scrotes.

'Why do you do it when it's illegal'? What a dumb question. Since when do laws dictate the capability of survival or what is morally right or wrong. They never have. If you must break a few laws to preserve your own life after society has thrown you a rough one, then you as a human are not wrong for adapting for survival.
Sadly, I can see this happening again over the next few years. Fortunately, there are rich pickings to be had nowadays. People are much less attached to things and throw away stuff that can be repaired, but they'll just as soon lob it.
I wholeheartedly understand the issues raised in this brilliant programme. I was born into a poor family, but the spirit of community that was surrounded by the tradegy of unemployment made the world seem like a safer place, not like today at all.
despite the downbeat theme the pub scene shows that people were very much more socially bonded than today. there are all ages groups represented. the same downturn in todays divided society would be much harsher.
It is a shame ITV scrapped World in Action as it was a very popular and well made current affairs programme. Now we have yet another Corrie episode in its place. All the modern ITV wants to show are the same repeats, boring soaps and mindless reality shows.
Panorama is on BBC1 and has been around even longer than World In Action. Sadly ITV scrapped WIA to concentrate on more Corrie episodes. Modern ITV only seems to make downmarket rubbish
Very unlikely with the idiots who run ITV these days who seem to only care about Coronation St and reality shows. Also, why do people call this programme Corrie, are they too thick to call it Coronation St or something?
Too right Dave, ratings for Coronation St fell to a record low last night. The only people I know who watch it or middle aged and old women who play bingo.
World In Action, Man Alive, Omnibus etc were diverting when originally broadcast but even as a schoolchild I realised that they were preaching rather than reporting a lot of the time.
The only current affairs programmes that I rated back then were Panorama (it really was good once), Horizon (ditto) 'This Week' and 'Arena' - although the last one was in retrospect preachy too!
SCUM, that's still the problem with a lot of folk from here... marriage, kids etc. when they can't even afford to look after themselves... like Big Issue sellers with dogs. Beer, smokes and footy, the classic killers of the working man!
This wasn't long ago, I can remember it. Liverpool was in a real bad state then, a by-word for dole, crime and people living on the edge. There was rioting or unrest of some kind every other week, or so it seemed.
We've become used to our 3 foreign holidays a year and our plasma TVs. Could the credit crunch take us back to these days or worse?
i been looking for Hoogstraten stuff on here too mate, like the After Dark episode were he talked with rapist Owen Oyston. Cant believe the lack of material, think hes had a word? lol
The cost of the registry office & the reception held in the local pub. It's unlikely to have cost very much. As the tv crew were filming on the day, it's probable that his fee for appearing on the programme covered any expense.
People are always asking "if he's so poor why does he smoke, drink, get married..." People don't stop doing the things other people do simply because they're poor. They have as much right to marriage as anyone. Perhaps ppl should stop breathing in order to save money?
Yeah & if they had a healthy eating plan, lost weight, took daily exercise & went to the library each day to study so they could really better themselves.
Unfortunately, life isn't like that. Ppl drink & smoke to make life bearable for themselves. If you have your livelihood, self respect & sense of purpose taken from you & are unable to properly provide for your family, it's not surprising that you'd find solace in alcohol & tobacco. It alleviates the misery of poverty & unemployment.
The man at 9mins is typical of the scum that still live in the area. They don't recognise shoplifting or fraud as a crime. It's OK until someone does it to them. Now the area is full of FAT lager swilling women and heroin addicts. They have no intention of working, why bother when they get everything handed to them and play the victim.
Despite all my efforts and education I still languished on the dole for five years during the first half of the eighties.Even the shit shovelin entry level stuff required experience.Thank you, Thatcher.Twenty five years, the UK has to import labour for such work. When the economy declines, as it will, will there still be enough work?
met ivor on the tip in 1983 he was going through a bin bag full of potato peelins i was lookin for wall panellin for me house.i sold him the pup in the vid for 2 quid ,i say sold he bummed it off me. it was hard in them days.
Me and my 2 bro's still go over there!Found a great little caravan stove on there the other day! Are kid caught WIELS DISEASE from over there, doesn't deter him though, even though he's blind in one eye!Teles, microwaves, homebrew kits, xmas wrapping paper, toilet brushes, mangles, gary glitter albums, tinned prunes, kites, fire grates, eddie shit dvd's,wire, champix tablets, aquariums, socks, prams, wooden flooring!Thats only a fraction of what we've found. So why does anyone have to rob some poor bugger!
its still like that cause half of them are fuckin lazy twats who love living on the dole or sellin coke then these people say the poles are takin our jobs,NO you wouldnt do the jobs cause your lyin in your pit till 2-3pm so someone's gotta do the jobs or the country comes to a stand still simple. rumour has it that the bbc paid for his wedding for talking to them
back in them days there simply was no work about, go ask the older members of your family they will tell you that. Please dont associate the people in the video with the modern day people who refuse to work.
It's a shame so many are lazy, they expect jobs to be handed to them. They need to prioritise their spending. don't buy cigarettes and drink BEFORE everything else - buy them after if there is money left. For the fantastic lifestyle and wages some claim to have had, why have't they got their own homes? Lazy people, Birkenhead is still the same but with more smackheads.
@urbex2007 every one is lazy untill it happens to you and there is more to life than owning your own home . i also suspect you would not repeat your comments to these peoples faces . like many on here its easy to talk big with no chance of confrontation . very school like .
Sadly the problems still exist to this day its just a different street but the same area.
No doubt Wirral Borough Council will tell you differently and supply you with a load of garbage statistics but you go and speak to the people of This area and look for yourselves not much if anything has changed. INVESTMENT INVESTMENT INVESTMENT MR. Blair
Thanks for uploading SoundLad, too working class for TV now. They don't want us thinking or reflecting, it's too dangerous.

He probably saved for months and plus it didnt look like a lavish wedding did it?
I was a kid in Manchester watching grown proud men resorting to this,.This was just a by product of Thatchers determination to break the unions.

Not to sound callous, but if this guy's so hard up he has to resort to scavenging off a dump, how the hell did he finance his wedding??

Think of how much extra money these people would have if they did not smoke or drink and that goes for the people today in the same situation.
Admittidly the country started going to rack and ruin as soon as Thatcher was PM.
